I suspect there are versions in DT as "Seeds of Love" or "Sprig of Thyme". It would appear to come from a lost broadside ballad of the 1690's. See the "Gardener Lad" sequel on my website.

If you search the database using the box in the upper right corner of this page, there are 19 songs that come up with the word thyme*. Lots of versions, as Bruce O. noted. alice, mt

Hi,

It's probably "Bunch of Thyme", which is bound to be in the database..... "let no man steal away your thyme."

Slainte

Irish duo Foster and Allen recorded " A Bunch of Thyme " in 1978. Popular in Ireland , and similar to the two in the data base Bruce O mentions. Depending on the age of your presumably maiden aunt, this might be close to the version you remember hearing.

Subject: Lyr Add: WILD MOUNTAIN THYME

What you could be looking for is "Wild Mountain Thyme." Sometimes it is known as "Will you go, Lassie?"

The summertime is coming,
And the trees are sweetly blooming,
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows all around the heather.

CHORUS: Will you go lassie, go?
And we'll all go together
To pick wild mountain thyme
All around the purple heather
Will you go lassie go?

I will build my love a bower
By yon crystal flowing fountain
And on it I will place
All the flowers of the mountain.

Chorus

If my true love will not go
I will surely find another
To pick wild mountain thyme
All around the purple heather.

Chorus

This is one of the prettiest songs I know, so even if it isn't the one you are looking for, you might want to look it up. I know it is in Mel Bay's "Songs of Ireland" as well as other anthologies of Irish music.

That just above is the Irish 'Wild Mountain Tyme" version of Robert Tanahill's (The Weaver Bard of Paisley) "The Braes o Balquhither". The earliest copy I've seen of the latter is 1816, but Tanahill died before then (1810?)
