The original is "The Comber's Whistle" in Scarce Songs 1 at www.erols.com/olsonw. It, in turn, is a slight reworking of the 16th century "The Carman's Whistle".

Thanks for the hint. It's a very long way from Comber's whistle to Oisin's Next market day but I just love reading the old versions to songs.
