Our Varsity Men's Choir sang it.
All the girls just melted, it was so beautiful
It is now my favorite song of all time.

Misplaced apostrophe in the first verse above:

"One more whale," our captain cried
"One more whale and well beat the ice."
But the winter star was in the sky
The sea's were rough the winds were high.

should be:

"One more whale!" our captain cried
"One more whale then we'll beat the ice."
But the winter star was in the sky
The seas were rough, the winds were high.

One of my favourite songs. If I remember Greg I will tell James your story next time I see him, which is not that often.

Well, for a while today, this thread was titled Frobisher Bay (Clinton Hammond). Heck, I almost believed for a moment myself that Clinton wrote it - and then I wondered if I had retitled the thread years ago, by mistake. I knew the song was the title song of an album by Tamarack - sure enough, the songwriter was James Gordon of Tamarack. I added the songwriter attribution to the lyrics Clinton posted.
But if it had been written by you, Clinton, I would have had a whole new respect for you. It's a great song, even if you didn't write it.

Sorry -- it's I that didn't read so well... that's what I get for reading through the forum while my stomach rumbles, rather than having a little patience and waiting 'till after lunch.

still, congratulations are in order...

FROBISHER BAY
^^ (James Gordon)

CHORUS:
Cold is the arctic sea
Far are your arms from me
Long will this winter be
Frozen in Frobisher Bay
Frozen in Frobisher Bay

"One more whale," our captain cried
"One more whale then we'll beat the ice."
But the winter star was in the sky
The seas were rough the winds were high.
CHORUS

Deep were the crashing waves
That tore our whaler's mast away
Dark are these sunless days
Waiting for the ice to break.
CHORUS

Strange is a whaler's fate
To be saved from the raging waves
Only to waste away
Frozen in this lonely grave.
CHORUS

;-)

I did an outdoor show in january in Baggeridge Country Park, near wolverhampton (UK).It was a sort of guided walk with enertainment along the way.It was in the middle of a seriously cold spell. So I cut a huge load of ice from one of the lakes and built an ice sculpture round a bonfire well primed with paraffin, beside another frozen lake. When the audience arrived ( in the dark) we sang "Frobisher Bay" by the lightof a wax torch and at the end I chucked the torch into the pile of ice and "Whoooomph" up shot theflames out of the ice . magic, and inspired by a truly magic song. Glad it's winning prizes. If you know James Gordon, I'd be grateful if you'ld pass this story on to him.

I'm almost positive I've posted the lyrics to Frobisher Bay at one time or another... I'll look around and if I don't find 'em I'll come back and add 'em...

As a mildly interesting bit of fluff you might be interested in in passing... from James Gordon's e-newsletter message yesterday...

[James Gordon] Last week my song "Frobisher Bay", which is all grown up now and living on its own in a loft condo, was named the winner of a Canadian CBC Radio contest on "This Morning". The 'Who Knows Junos' contest asked listeners to call in and sing their favourite Canadian song. The winning entry was performed by a Toronto a capella group called Restless Eve. I missed the whole thing since I was in the U.S... but I hear that the song narrowly defeated Stan Rogers' "Barrett's Privateers", (which would have got my vote)...Last week I heard another lovely rendition of "Frobisher Bay" sung by a great choir from Cobourg Ontario called "La Jeunesse"-- It's on an excellent new CD called "Stolen Child"- the CD also includes Stan Rogers' "Northwest Passage"-- It's available through Box 925 Cobourg ON K9A 7W4... very cool... And heh, speaking of cool... a couple of weeks back my new song "Funny Old World" from the "One Timeless Moment" CD was listed as one of the "Top Ten Coolest Songs of the Week" by the Toronto Sun newspaper. I am so UNcool, really, that I didn't recognize any of the other acts on the list.....
