Please can you tell me what the story behind this song is and where can I get a copy. We used it during a drama project at school and I have never ever forgotten it since. You kindly led me to a copy of the lyrics and now I have them I want to hear it even more ! It has been following me around for 19 years now and I still love it.

On the other hand going into the Water don't half sober you up. And I speak from very hard, and cold and wet experience !!!!

Silt eh?
Is this the first example of being "canally retentive" here on the Mudcat?
Is the story wwhat we should call a cutting?
yes but seriously was (is) there a song in the story?

Yes there's also a piece about said EP as well, a review by somebody named only as D.M.[Dave Moran?] I won't reproduce it here, obviously the man has no taste.

Look at it this way - if the water had been a bit deeper, you might have gotten a bigger headline and a longer article - and we wouldn't be asking for details!

Good grief!!How the past returns to haunt you!
A mate and I decided it would make a good holiday to cycle the towpath of the local canal out of Brum and into the countryside. The towpath had crumbled and I hit the hole first and went in. The silt at the bootom held me as I was in a kneeling position so I stuck my arm up and my mate saw it and pulled me out. It was a slack newsday, but indicative of how mainstream folk was at the time because I was only a floor singer at the Jug O Punch in Brum and had just made my first E.P with Martin Carthy. This is the most obscure event I have yet had to return to in my life.

Small blurb in "Folk Scene" of September 1965, which cost a whole 1s 9d old money [about 10 new pence] Harvey Andrews fell into a canal in Birmingham and made all the evening papers. Come on then Harvey, what's it all about then??
A seeker after truth....Giok
