Yeah, it's a moronic thread too, but what the hell........Everyone here has got some skeleton in the video closet. You know, one of those completely inane, dumbass, and completely moronic movies that you can't bring yourself to admit in public that you really like.

Now as to what's moronic, that's up to you. Whether it's "Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo" or perhaps any of the "Star Trek" series.....maybe anything....your choice.

The other day I stumbled into what I think may be the absolutely pinnacle of moronic movies and damned if I didn't keep laughing. It's a complete embarassment to admit that I even saw this, let alone like it........BUT, currently #1 on my Hit Parade of Moronic Movies I Like" is...........Joe Dirt, a David Spade and SNL friends vehicle that is the abyss of bad taste and bad jokes....but somehow because of my penchant for bad taste and bad jokes, it cracked me up for the most part. Drags at the end, but........

Well, Spaw, you may have trouble getting bites on this one. That's a tough combination... a movie that you think is moronic, which you like, which kinda makes you a.. But, I'll give you a couple of not particularly good movies that I enjoy watching every once in a while... two horror movies come to mind... Carnival of Souls and Horror Hotel (which are on the same DVD for about seven bucks.) Of course, there are many cheesy science fiction movies... enough to provide Mystery Science Theater with a livelihood for the next century. I also liked The Man From Planet X, or we could go back to Superman and the Mole Men. Somehow, I don't think that's what you're looking for. They probably have enough saving grace to disqualify them as being moronic. Guess I'll have to think about this some more.

Ah yes, Plan 9 From Outer Space... a favorite of mine... honest. Another favorite of mine, less well known, was Night of the Lepus. That's right... Lepus is the generic name for rabbits. I taped it off the tv for my son many years ago. Nothing more terrifying than an invasion of 30 foot tall bunnies. And it didn't even take place at Easter.

I saw "Little Nicky" (I think that's what it's called) a couple of weeks ago, and it wasn't quite as stupid as I thought it would be. I actually liked it.

I liked Water World, too.

Things we talk about at work:
We came up with the cast first - Adam Sandler and the guy from Little Nicky whose name I have completely blocked. I threw in William Shatner. Somebody else said Carrot Top ought to be in it. Now we almost had a cast. (We still needed a couple of women. I suggested all sorts of names - Brittney Spears, Sally Struthers, Roseanne - but nobody liked my ideas.) We needed a plot. More or less. Rather than write a whole new story, I thought it might be a good idea to use a tried-and-true idea, much like The Flintstones, The Brady Bunch, etc. I thought a modernised Gilligan's Island might be very popular. Why has a movie never been made of this?! Shatner as Skipper, Whatshisname from Little Nicky as Gilligan, and maybe Carrot Top could play Ginger, and Adam Sandler as The Professor. Don't have a clue about the Howells (maybe Kevin Costner and Madonna?) or Mary-Ann.

If you're looking for actual bad movies instead of bad movie ideas, never mind.

I think I am one of only 2 people in the whole of humankind who actually liked the 1st Star Trek film.

Other than that, all my movie faves are absolutely top notch. Not a stinker in the bunch (coughcough).

My all-time favorite moronic movie has to be "Yellowbeard" - an absolutely hilarious pirate/treasure island type story starring most of the Monty Python crew AND Cheech & Chong AND James Mason AND Marty Feldman AND Bernadette Peters... AND it's been UNAVAILABLE on video for ages.

So if anyone out there can hook me up with a copy, I'll... I'll... well, I would do something!

Day Of The Triffids. Loved the book first, then fell in love with the movie because it stuck so closely to the book. How can one not love plant-creatures who communicate by clacking stick-like appendages (no, no, these were like hands)?

Haven't seen it for ages. Used to have the video but some ex-friend made off with it and all of my John Wyndham novels.

The meteor shower's green glow leaves everyone blind, nearly everyone, that is. Fortunately, a few people, like our hero (William something) can still see (his eyes were bound after surgery). Maybe they can save mankind ... .

Giac, Are you single? I have two copies of "Day Of The Triffids". My all time favorite! Yeah...the whole world is blinded by a meteor shower except our hero who was undergoing eye surgery. (His doctor commits suicide by jumping out a window.) A little girl, running away from boarding school misses the shower by hiding in the baggage compartment of a train, as does an alcoholic scientist tucked away in a lighthouse with his ever enduring wife. They find the secret to killing off the killer plants who sound like a cross between crickets and a cow stuck in the mud.Triffids are attracted to sound - hence a heart-stopping chase of an ice cream truck playing the most annoying music. And the tacky ending - All the blind people of earth stumbling up the steps to Sunday morning service celebrating man's ability to survive and God's mercy. Can't ask for better. Crashing trains and planes, rampant escaped convicts, an orgy consisting of ladies in high heels dancing on tables. Great stuff. I have seen it more than once and also have the book.

Another vote for the first Terk movie -- I never understood why it got such savage reviews -- good premise.

Haven't seen Triffids, but now I know where that scene in Mars Attack came from.

Zappa's 1000 Motels gets a weird love/hate response outta me.

The last scene on Lassir come home gets me every time.

I liked Waterworld and admit it out loud. I also liked The Postman. I don't know which Day of the Triffids (The Howard Keel film?) you are all talking about but it barely resembles John Wyndham/s book by more than the title. I did like the movie but real is real.

How about Cherry 2000 with Melanie Griffith. Soldier with Kurt Russell. The Quartermass movies. Doctor Who.

We seem to have drifted into SciFi. I admit to liking The Little Princess ( "Mafeking is relieved! Oh Jenny, Mafeking is relieved!")and Wee Willie Winkie.

Ever see "Gunga Din" with Cary Grant (worst performance ever) and Sam Jaffe as Gunga?   If I see it's on, I try to tune in for the last 15 minutes. The excitement and pathos builds as the garrison is under attack and a wounded and dying Gunga Din valiantly blows one last alert on his little bugle. bbllatt.....phirp....poit.... Man, I am on the floor every time!!! Jaffe giving this little toot is a riot. I know it's supposed to be "touching" or whatever, but you have to see it! It's hilarious!!!

Spy Kids with Allen Cumming as the master mind -- or so he seemed. An action flick for the under ten's. The plot was contrived, the resolution was a rushed "Just be nice to each other" ending that stopped making sense the moment you thought about it... but...

The relationship between older sister and younger brother was neat, and for the entire film, the whole thing was like a hybrid between an Escher print and a Salvador Dali painting that had been brought to life -- 88 minutes of pure dreamscape.

Sometimes that's all you need.

John Wayne IS Attila the Hun.

"The Russian Steppes are vast and beautiful, my lady, but they pale in the shadow of your loveliness. Truly you are above all other Princesses in the realm!" This one is worth the price of admission just to see John non-chalantly mouthing lines like that one. The asian eye makeup and pointy moustache is also amazingly bad. Makes you regret that the Duke was never asked to play Othello.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Wayne's World. For some reason these two movies slay me. I laugh to the point of being clinical. Also, an old 'made for TV' farce named 'Evil Roy Slade' has got to be one of the funniest American movies ever made. Been years since I've seen it. Ok, but the secret one I liked was 'The Wedding Planner'...there, I said it...so, sue me.

Evil Roy Slade has come up around here several times in the past and I have to agree that it is absolutely hilarious! But in the case of ERS, I tell a lot of people that I love it, as opposed to Joe Dirt which to me is funnier than hell, but I hate to tell anyone I like it!

Make that 3 for the Star Trek movie....

'Princess Bride' is fantastic.

Did Madeleine Kahn die then?? When was that??

'Men in Tights' was a hoot, especially the line 'ah, but I can do an English accent!'

'Killer Tomatoes', love the titles.

'Yellowbeard' was great too.

'Night of the Lepus' was the best ever all time worst horror movie, such a shame I can't get a hold of it.

'Day of the Triffids' sticks to the book????? You mean the film with Howard Keel???? I trust you were reading a 'book of the film' because in the original John Wyndham novel, there is a) no lighthouse, b) no ice-cream truck, c)no girls boarding school (only previously blind pupils from a special school)and d) triffids didn't die when exposed to sea water. The best version that I know of is the 6 part adaptation by the BBC about 20 years ago (a very young John Duttine as Bill Masen), which I've got a scratchy copy of but would love them to issue on DVD. I have fessed up to this many times before, but I'll do it again:

ISHTAR

Yes, Ishtar. Should be required viewing for anyone who has ever had to endure Songwriters Night at the local joint. I still maintain that if the lead roles had been played by, say, Chevy Chase and Martin Short, the critics wouldn't have been so unkind. Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty aren't exactly known for their comic genius, after all. But do see it once, and keep an open mind. It's so bad it's actually funny.

I wouldn't call Princess Bride moronic at all. I think it's a very nicely done fairy tale. Same with the Mummy. And Shrek. I just love Shrek.

And I have to say, The Scorpion King was fantastic. If you liked The Mummy, go see it. It's Conan and Indiana Jones and any good Western all rolled up in one. Sure, it's a little predictable, as most movies like that are. But it's very entertaining, and isn't that why we go to the movies in the first place? Also, it's PG-13, and quite clean enough for anyone over about 9-10.

I also have a collection of about 25 or so Disney animated movies. Lady and the Tramp is my favorite, followed by the Aristocats. The two dogs in that one, voiced by Pat Buttram and George Lindsay, are just plain hilarious.

And last but not least, I love Jackie Chan.

There was a local movie producer here who made a film titled LOBSTEROIDS. It is the all time worst movie I ever saw. It is about some evil scientist who creates giant lobsters that attack anyone playing rock music.(I like that in a lobster) But, the worst part was, I had a role in it! Gawd, you cannot imagine how bad it was. (the movie)

Anyone ever see "The Maze"? One of those "so bad it's good" horror flicks. A newly wed takes his bride to his ancestral castle where he has just been named the new Lord. On their first night, he meets with the family lawyer and returns from the meeting with a white streak in his hair. The family secret is that horrible. After an hour and a half of routine horror scenes, the truth comes out. The true Lord still lives...he is a giant frog who lives in the tower. Seems something went wrong in his mother's pregnancy and as we all know a foetus goes through all the stages of evolution before reaching "MAN". Uncle Harry stopped at frog. And frogs live forever...unless they jump from towers and get squashed on the ground.

"Triffids" book and movie are very different. I love both.

This one is too much fun to quit on, even tho' my preschool group is due in 10 minutes.

Ishtar deserved better than it got. The lampoon of Middle East politics is, I would say, right on.

Hoffman and Beatty were too contemptuous of their characters. If they had had more affection for these losers the movie would have had a lot more life. Still, all in all, the auction scene is a standout. It alone was worth the price of admission.

I think we need category distinctions, between campy bad movies, and movies that are supposed to be good, and are mesmerizingly poor, that one has to admit liking or at least watching with grim fascination as one's critical skills are left pounding at the door saying, "stop," "stop".

In the campy camp, "Glen or Glenda" is my favourite. And certainly, "The Maze" is one of the best of all the worst movies ever, I saw it at age 10. I especially liked the sound of the frog slurping down the hallways late at night. The final scene in the Maze is totally ridiculous. I seem to remember that it had another name though.

I think CP's original idea is for films that one ends up watching again even though you hate yourself for it. "Pretty Woman" is probably that film for me. It is such a dreadful film, so contrived, I hate its disgusting politics, its message is that rich people can do anything they want, shopping is liberating, prostitutes have hearts of gold, Richard Gere is creepy, everything about it makes me want to throw up. But I am sorry to say that when Julia Roberts takes off her blond fright wig, and lets down her hair (hey, scriptwriters, don't you recognise your own myth, you idiots!)and walks around that hotel room in her bathrobe and bare feet, I am (dare I say it) hooked. She really is so incandescently beautiful (like the young Elizabeth Taylor in Ivanhoe, or Kelly McGillis in Reuben, Reuben). But I can't watch the last scene -- it is so vomity that even I have limits.

Night of the Lepus? Oh yes. It ranks right up there with The Fog and Ghost Story as one of the yearly must-sees. Someone invariably blurts out: "Dammit, Jim, I'm not a wabbit hunter!"

I also have a pirated copy of Tremors that was taped off of the USA channel. It is a perennial favourite because of the dubbing. "Gol-dang worms!"

Strangebrew. "Come over to the dark side, you knob." Granted, it is supposed to be silly, but I can't help loving it all the same. The bit where Hosehead's cape unfurls? It sends me to the floor.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Army of Darkness. Painful.

JE, your post reminds me that there is another category here altogehter which is movies that have been rendered ridiculous because of the censored cuts! Blazing Saddles really takes a hit in some of it's cut versions and some of the cuts make no sense at all!

And a watch over and over has to be Little Shop of Horrors..... every time I'm bored or just a little down, slap it in the vid, whack up the volume and lust after that dentist and his bike!!! Singing along with Audrey makes life a bit better.

Any one of the Police Squad videos, Naked Gun etc.... practically worn out 'the smell of fear'....

Regretably, it was slagged by the critics, but I can't stop watching Men in Tights. That dance routine is something else.... and all the little 'in-jokes' (Bagelle and Locksley.... 12 Century Fox.... meshugganehs?) It's my all time favourite slap it in and watch it....

I just watched some of "The Jerk" on TV last night, thinking it might be another one to add to the list, but....aaaaauuuugh! I couldn't stand it! And Liz, if you ever come to Hawaii and see a banana tree, you will understand where Audrey II's creator got his/her inspiration. I keep waiting for these banana flowers (which hang straight down) to get up and start singing! I'll try to find a picture to link to.

For non-stop laughs, it's "The Phantom Empire", a B Western that combines the genre with Sci-Fi! Gene Autry rides into a cave after some bad guy, and follows him down in a supersonic elevator to an underground world of aliens. You can tell the aliens, because they look like people dressed up in tin foil suits wearing buckets on their heads. An all-time classic, and I love it. Oh, and by the way, Gene sings a few tunes, and plays the D-45, too!!

What was the name of that movie with the gorilla in a spacemans helmet?

And any movie with the monster carrying a woman { either in a dead faint OR kicking and screaming } across the landscape.

This is a tough one, Spaw. I can name lots of moronic movies, but I don't like any of them!

Peter T. - Agreed! "Pretty Woman" has to stand as one of the most repugnant and creepy films of all time...I absolutely hated it. It made me feel physically sick.

One movie that I like, which I'm sure loads of people think is moronic is "Howard the Duck". I loved it. But I already knew Howard well from the comic book, and that helps. Howard is a cool and sardonic waterfowl, "trapped in a world he never made", plagued by an insane and deluded humanity...great satirical stuff. If Howard had been born a "hairless ape" he would be just like Don Cherry, and would probably coach a hockey team.

I haven't seen "Reefer Madness" mentioned. I believe it started out as a US government propaganda film (in the 40's?)touting the evils of marijuana, but it is now a cult fave. Someone gave me a copy a few years ago. I'll have to watch it again, for research purposes.

Mark - I haven't seen "The Jerk" for eons, but I remember it as absurdly funny. "The new phone book is here, the new phone book is here! I'm somebody!" What's changed in the 20-odd year interim?

I completely forgot about the following dreck that I love: "Escape from New York". Much better than it's decades later sequel "Escape from L.A.".

I have to admit (thanks KimC for reminding me), I saw "Scorpion King". And...well...it wasn't bad, really (as action films go). Don't expect the art that is "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns" (from which this one is spawned) ;D

However, "The Rock" is better than Arnie Schwarzenegger was in his first attempt at acting.

Oh, and KimC? Have you seen any of Jackies older stuff? Back before he started doing films in English? Ah, for the days of "Drunk Monkey and the Tigers Eye" and "Spiritual Kung Fu"!!

Just Watched Creature From The Black Lagoon. If William Shatner is the King of the Cigar Store Indian School of acting, Richard Carlson was the King of Consternation. Among other movies, he was in The Valley of the Gwangi, It Came From Outer Space, The Amazing Mr. X and Human Gorilla. He did "worried" better than anyone.

One of my all-time favorites that usually gets a very low rating from the critics is a film based on Ernest Hemingway's Nick Adams stories----ADVENTURES OF A YOUNG MAN.

Paul Newman as the punch-drunk fighter, the battler in one segment / tale, is just great. Dan Daley as an alcoholic carnival advance man is too. Michael J. Pollard as Nick's chum is just wacky enough. Fine fall "Up-In-Michigan" photography and the relationship between the boy and his overbearing too narrow parents really hit home for me. I'd give it 3 and a half stars out of 4 at least. But as I said, no critique I've ever read gave it more then 2 stars----usually only 1.

Many years ago Hockey Night in Canada ran segments of a thirties movie between periods, The King Of Hockey> Gabby Dougan, our hero gets in all kinds of trouble, intentionally takes penalties just so that he can be near his girl who is seated behind the penalty box. The acting was terrible, the stuntmen could barely skate, the plot was horrible and I would love to have a copy of it. I've been searching for years.

Wasn't there a film called something like 'It came from outer space' starring a guy in a rubber suit that was scaringly similar to the Alien plot (ship in space, crew mysteriously disappear, rubber suited alien is eating them)? THAT was moronic.... you could see the zipper in the back of the suit and I'm sure at one point his hands are clearly visibly under a glove that's slipped off....

and then there is, Trekkies! a lovely documentary about the people who go to Star Trek conventions and the philosophy of Trek....and how it has affected their lives....(or the lack of them)....

there is even one part where this woman goes to work wearing a star trek button and a phaser....and she has everyone at work call her Captain or Sir....and how she got in trouble with a judge because she showed up for jury duty wearing a star trek uniform....

Two movies come to mind.

"Clash of the Titans". Total bastardization of Greek myth. Harry Hamlin talking to a metal owl. Burgess Merideth looking all kinds of sincere. And totally groovy special effects.

"Straight to Hell". Looks like the director who made "Sid and Nancy" and "Repo Man" had some spare cash and leftover film to kill, so he invited a bunch of friends out to the desert to make a Gad-awful western. Every line is ad-libbed. Every scene is arbitrary. But check out the stars: The Pogues (as Mexican bandits), Elvis Costello as a waiter, Joe Strummer as a bank robber, Courtney Love as a gangster's moll. Grace Slick and Dennis Hopper have cameos. The scene where the cast tries to conduct a funeral without killing anyone is a riot.

I'm with Devilmaster, "Top Secret" is awesome. Unfortunately most of the people I've suggested it to haven't really liked it!! I also LOVED Galaxy Quest with Tim Allen.....very, very, very funny movie that many of my friends didn't like...probably Trekkies!!

And Spaw, I totally agree with the cuts made to Blazing Saddles. A local station ran the movie and when they did the fart scene around the camp fire, they dubbed in belches over the fart sounds. I laughed until I cried!!!

Silly, yes. A spoof, possibly. A farce, definitely. But since those things were its goal, I don't think you can call it moronic for aiming at a target and hitting a bull's eye. ... unless (and this is entirely possible), you have a different definition of "moronic" than I do.

Unfortunately, I think the VHS is out of print. So for those of you who missed it, you missed one whacky classic.

Favorite scenes: John Lithgow as Doctor Lizardo possessed by the mind of Lord John Worfin in his room in the mental hospital, the brain surgery scene, and the scene where the President signs the declaration of war (short form).

Come to think of it, I've always had a yen for Godzilla movies...I love seeing old 'Zilla smashing up Japanese cities and demolishing military hardware. Even better, I love seeing him take on other monsters, like King Kong, Gidrah the three-headed dragon, Rodan, etc...(Rodan is particularly amusing...looks like an aggrieved chicken, crossed with a bat and a watermelon...or something like that.)

I think the Japanese should make a movie set in 1945-46, where the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs wake up (and seriously annoy) Godzilla, and he comes forth to save the honour of Japan at the eleventh hour!

Picture the scene! It's the spring of 1946, the Japanese have still not surrendered despite the A-bombs, and the Allies are invading the very beaches of Japan herself...Operation Olympic has begun. Thousands of ships support an invasion force of half a million men, as an uncountable swarm of landing craft makes for the beaches. Above, a pitiful scattering of airborne kamikazes try to fight their way through an impenetrable screen of several thousand Hellcats and Corsairs...when SUDDENLY...

A familiar reptilian head breaks the surface of the water, and that SCREEEEEEEEECH we all know so well rips through the din of battle. Godzilla ATTACKS!

A burst of radioactive breath, and 300 landing craft are swept away like leaves in a blast furnace! Marines die like flies! Forward comes Godzilla, harried by buzzing fighter planes, shrugging off 16-inch shells from the American battleships. KATOOM!!! The battleship Missouri goes up in a massive explosion as Godzilla targets her ammo magazines! Now he's through the destroyer screen, sinking the smaller ships with mighty blows of his forepaws, seizing the DD Fletcher in his jaws and crushing it into unrecognizable fragments. The battleline cannot stand against him! Even pointblank rounds from the Washington and the South Dakota fail to pierce his body armour.

Godzilla is seriously ticked off at these gaijin heathens who dare to wake him up from his thousand-year nap with their puny A-bombs and their Louis Armstrong records. He wreaks unbelievable havoc on the disintegrating battleline, leaving burning and drifting hulks in his wake. On to the aircraft carriers!

And so on...Well, you can see what a great movie this would make...it would call for the biggest special effects extravaganza of all time, and would probably cost more than Titanic, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars all rolled into one.

I'm surprised the Japanese haven't done it yet. :-)

BTW, the most peculiar and totally hokey of all those monster movies from Japan, IMO, was Mothra. Has to be seen in all its idiotic glory to be fully appreciated. Who else but the Japanese would make a movie about a giant larva that turns into a giant moth?

I believe it was a Japanese import (I assume that because the dialog was VERY poorly dubbed) and every show Ultra Man transformed himself to a taller than the buildings superhero and fought a new monster to save the city!! Anyone else see that one? It's only a vague memory but I'm pretty sure it was called Ultra Man......phew, the mind is the first thing to, uh, hmmmm, what was I saying?

Right on! But the problem is, he didn't go after the actual perpetrators...the US military. So actually, the movie I am suggesting makes a whole lot of sense. I bet it would be hugely popular in Japan, but less so in the USA...in the sequel, he could take the war to the US West Coast, after demolishing Pearl Harbour of course. In Part III, he could march on Washington!!! Man, what a series!

I have never seen "Ultra-Man", I regret to say. It sounds bloody awful.

Anybody here familiar with the children's series Power Rangers (actually, several series)? It's adapted from a Japanese original, I believe (with the non-battle scenes remade with American actors to avoid dubbing goofs). The whole lot are written with the same philosophy of the Godzilla movies, only in farout technicolor, and being basically an infomercial for action-figure dolls. But every episode builds up to a battle between a giant monstor and a giant robot towering over a city....

Clash of the Titans was great. So was Jason and the Argonauts, an earlier movie done by the same people, with the same type of special effects.

for a movie that everyone either loves or hates, how about The Fifth Element? It's like a Lost in Space episode written by Salvadore Dali. I love it. I own a copy and I've seen it at least six times.

Count me in as one of the few who liked the Kevin Costner Robin Hood. I also liked the B.Frazier Mummy, and the Mummy Returns. I don't know if I can bring myself to see The Scorpion King, though.

Any movie directed by Tim (I just forgot his last name - the guy that did Ed Wood, Mars Attacks, - you know who I'm talking about). Even the bad ones have a certain amount of charm. (Mars Attacks was a bad one, Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands are two of the best movies ever made).

Carol C... You're absolutely right, Brother From Another Planet is a great movie. I bought it cheap on video, and now have it (cheap) on DVD. it shows what you can do with essentially no special effects, no explosions, no prosthetic ears... just an intelligent, humorous script with the main character mute. Brilliant is right!

Don't worry, Carol, I don't think you're moronic either. [insert stupid smiley face here] And I agree with you about "Harold and Maude", and with CapriUni about "Buckaroo Banzai". I think Jeff Goldblum's showing up in full cowboy regalia, and nobody commenting about it, is one of the best bits in that movie.

Bardford, I remember thinking "The Jerk" was really really funny when I first saw it, and fully expected to like it the second time around. Maybe it's just that I'm 20 years older, but the jokes all seemed to fall flat this time. Now, there are two Steve Martin movies that never fall flat for me, though I'm not sure if they would fall into the "moronic" category: "The Man With Two Brains" (yes, I guess that would, but I love it), and "All of Me", which is still one of my all-time favorites. The courtroom scene is priceless.

I third y'all that Brother from Another Planet is great. In fact, anything by John Sayles tends to be worth watching, even that hack bit about radiation turning the critters into giants he did for Hollywood. A genuinely intelligent script in a hack movie.

Having read the story, I gag at Boy and his Dog. (movie unseen.)

I second The Tim Allen Star Trek takeoff. But then I'll go see Alan Rickamn in anything. Even January Man. (Now THERE was a clunker.)

Peter T. - Well,you've got a point there...Mothra had some memorable peculiarities, while Mothra vs Godzilla was just plain awful!

I just saw The Scorpion King, and it's actually quite a good movie of that general type...sword and sorcery...I'd consider it superior to the Conan films, and I'm a Schwarzenneger fan. I was surprised how good it was. Really surprised. It's fine light entertainment in the swashbuckling, head-lopping tradition, and the wrestler guy makes an excellent Conan-type hero in every way. The only character that didn't ring true for me was Memnon (the main bad guy). He just didn't seem like someone from ancient times at all to me...he would have looked more at home in a $5,000 business suit than a suit of armour.

Hi. I saw some stuff about Mel Brooks's Blazing Saddles on this thread. And it is, indisputably, a moron movie; each time I watch it, it is a little bit dopier than before. I think my favorite character is the village drunkard (not because I approve of acoholism, of course—I disapprove of it very strongly); I just love that part where he is in a fight and knocks his opponent down just by blowing on the guy.
Actually, I love quite a few moron movies, such as various movies by Mel Brooks, and anything and everything ever done by anyone from Monty Python. I also ADORE that movie Clueless. I could go on forever about the moron movies I love. I'm proud to "fess up" about it at any time. Moronism is cool!

The Mole People lived somewhereunder the surface of the Earth and, as I recall, got pissed at something we were doing and decided to put a stop to the despoilers on the Earth's surface. Can't think of a movie, but there used to be a painting show with some Swedish lady who was made perpetually happy by a wipe-away shading technique. I found her morotic, somehow. I suppose there was something fetishy about a woman being so easily pleased.

And of course, as always, I deeply loved Kolchak the Night Stalker. Some early Jackie Chan like the Drunken Master is dumb, but fun. Any Steven Seagal is moronic, and some is hilarious. His mix of working class guy/eastern mysticism has been summed up as "he's the mysterious presence at the backyard barbeque". He kills me.

Country bears is pretty dumb, but I liked it. I know there are some dumber ones I like, but I can't bring them to mind.

Does anybody know if ther was ever a movie based on Henry James' Beast In The Jungle? I'd love it on principle. The story is enjoyable in a way for it's excruciating moronic suspense, and to make a film of it would be even stupider. All the way through you can't help thinking FALL IN LOVE YOU IDIOT! MESS UP YOUR LIFE SOMEHOW! DO SOMETHING! or, rather like Woody to Buzz in Toystory shouting YOU'RE A CHARACTER IN A STORY! The climactic resolution is a great literary Duh!

I, the biggest Captain Kirk promoter on Mudcat, loved "Galaxy Quest"! Best send-up I've ever seen.

And about "Howard the Duck", Cluin...I was dead serious. I love it. This may be partly because I loved the comic it was based upon. You who have never read the comic and just don't get it can languish miserably in your cultural ignorance as far as I'm concered... :-)

CapriUni: "Banzai" has returned on DVD now. Something I need to see (again...).

Y'all have pretty much covered all my faves; assorted Mel Brooks movies (Blazing Saddles and History Of The World in particular), assorted Z-A-Z movies (Airplane I & II and Naked Gun), Galaxy Quest, Buckaroo (and yes, I spotted "Rocket 88" **twice** during "The Blues").

And speaking of blues, does "Blues Brothers" qualify for this category? Another fave there...

Haven't seen too many of the Godzilla films, but "Godzilla vs Megalon" is one of my favorite MST3K episodes.

Regarding Waterworld....the critics were just in a mood to roast Kevin Costner, because he had become too successful for a while there. There's nothing more dangerous than becoming too popular. They put you up there just to knock you down. They then established the idea in people's minds that ALL future Kevin Costner movies must necessarily be absolutely rotten, each one worse than the last, and everybody bought it. This was assisted significantly by Kevin Costner himself when he made "The Postman", which really was a rotten movie in most respects. I thought his "Wyatt Earp" was very good, but I seem to be about the only person around who did. It was far better and more accurate history than other movies about Earp (Tombstone in particular...Tombstone was great entertainment, but nonsense as history).

There was a British horror movie several years ago in which a creature out in the moors killed people by removing their bones. It's truly hilarious, the local folks keep finding boneless bodies and bringing them up to the manor house.

Yes! I saw that one on late night TV once in the 70's. It was truly bizarre. All these rubbery, jelly-like, boneless bodies lying around...they were a sad sight.

Exactly how the bones were removed was quite mysterious, since the bodies bore no marks or incisions. The bones simply ceased to exist somehow, leaving the rest of the body lying there. Talk about becoming "spineless"! The bodies were, as O'Meara has suggested, very difficult to pick up and move, because they tended to flop around all over the place, like a garbage bag full of jello.

Yuck.

Talk about a bone-headed idea for a movie! No, wait...

I absolutely love Galaxy Quest, and would be happy to watch it many more times. It's a brilliant send-up of Star Trek in its sillier moments, both public and private.

Shatner likes it too. Kind of a shame they couldn't have given him a cameo role in it as a janitor or something.

How about "Vampire Circus" with the Tom-Baker's-Dr.Who-assistant as the sister half of a brother and sister vampire pair of (I think) trapeze artists (or something glamorously similar attached to a circus). Basically it's a whole circus troupe that are, in reality, vampires. Just to see Dave Prowse (Darth Vader in a later life)as the typecast 'strongman' (and vampire) is worth it.

Then again "John Carpenter's Vampires" was REALLY cheesy - but good.

The sequel was rubbish but a really corny one that just suddenly changes genres halfway through is Quentin Tarantino's "Dusk 'til Dawn": This classic goes from a psychopathic shoot-everything-that- moves-and-swear-the-air-purple-while-doing-it flick to a swear-the-air-blue-while-being-attacked-by-and-vanquishing-vampires movie. It has GOT to be the wierdest "vamp" flick EVER !!!!! Just to see Cheech Marin in about a hundred different roles and the guy who plays the biker / trucker with the pistol at his crotch and slowly turning into a vampire while trying to conceal it is bloody hilarious.

To be honest, just about ANY vampire flick where they overdo the corny lines or over dramatise the roles is gonna be a worthy contender - i.e. almost ANY of the 60's and 70's Hammer Horror Vampire / Dracula / Frankenstein flicks will sit comfortably here especially "Vampire Lovers" with Carmilla Karnstein as the "head Vampiress".

"Them" is a worthy contender as are most of those great B-grade Sci-Fi flicks: It, The Beast from (however many) Fathoms, etc.

However, I have to proffer two Aussie flicks here for consideration.

Firstly "The Cars That Ate Paris" (Paris being NOT the French capital, but a small outback Queensland town - or is it NSW) - a truly awful film.

and the winner is . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Wait for it . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

UNDEAD! A UFO / Sci-Fi / Zombie combo-genre film that is so truly bad it's hilarious. Of course it was deliberately done this way but the dead-pan lines and expression of the film's hero (who carries a home-created triple-barrelled shotgun) are just classics.

I also own copies of Men In Tights and Prince of Thieves and love them both (the attraction of seeing Carcassonne which serves as the town of Nottingham helps since we visited it recently - Carcassonne, not Nottingham)

I am truly amazed NO-ONE mentioned the one film which wins the "Worst Film Of All Time" category hands down, consistently, year-in / year-out.

"Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes" absolute cornball BRILLIANCE - has me rolling around the floor crying with laughter EVERY time.

Finally how could anyone admit to a love of Jane Fonda? Cannot act. Cannot sing and was personally and directly responsible for the deaths of several American Servicemen during the Vietnam War when she visited prisons and passed notes passed to her by prisoners DIRECTLY to their Nth Vietnamese captors who promptly executed them.
The woman should be shunned and ostrscised for all time.

Anyway, that's my (lengthy) offering on the topic - sorry about the quasi-political diatribe at the end.

I will once again declare the glories of "Howard the Duck", a delightful little movie that got totally trashed by critics and public alike in 1986. I loved it. Of course, I loved Howard long before he was in the movies...and that made all the difference. I would probably have not gone to see it at all, had I not been familiar already with the comic.

I gather that only 0.05 per cent of the public had ever read the comic? No wonder the movie was a flop.

The comic may have been the most unique idea Marvel Comics ever came up with. It was mostly social satire.

New Favourite: War of the Worlds. I sat through it amazed at how anyone could spend $100 million dollars on the most exquisite special effects, and 3 dollars on the script. It is the same film as "The Day After Tomorrow" -- the entire world is being blown up, iced, whatever, and all that matters is that a father bonds with his children. I especially liked the parts where Tom Cruise is the only person with a working car in America, so that he and his kids can bond as they drive around all day.

New Favourite: War of the Worlds. I sat through it amazed at how anyone could spend $100 million dollars on the most exquisite special effects, and 3 dollars on the script. It is the same film as "The Day After Tomorrow" -- the entire world is being blown up, iced, whatever, and all that matters is that a father bonds with his children. I especially liked the parts where Tom Cruise is the only person with a working car in America, so that he and his kids can bond as they drive around all day.

I agree with all of that and would ad that Cruise's portrayal of a New Jersey dock worker actually, literally should negate his Oscar nominations. They should be removed from the record retroactively.

My favorite part of the new War Of The Worlds is at the ferry when in a fleeing crowd of several hundred people only TWO people pull out guns. IN NEW JERSEY ? ONLY TWO GUNS ? Now THAT'S a figment of someone's imagination.

Beautiful summation of "War of the Worlds", Peter. LOL! You see, Hollywood figures it's impossible to get good attendance at a movie without putting some "family values" in the story. Just the kind of stuff you are objecting to.

Remember the idiotic love story in "Titanic"? Same deal. God, how I suffered through that...ARGHHH! But it sold tickets, didn't it?

The original H.G. Wells story has no "family values" stuff in it...it is a story fueled by much grander and more encompassing human issues than whether one daddy can bond with his kids. Sheesh! What do you want to bet that if they did the War of the Worlds faithfully to the original story it would bomb at the box office nowadays?

The old Titanic film "A Night To Remember" back in the 50's (quite a good movie) did NOT concoct some goofy love story to drive the plot. No. They figured that a plot about something as tragic and enormous as what happened on that night in 1912 didn't NEED some special "human interest" manipulations to make it work. They were so right. The main focus in the old movie was what happened to the SHIP itself...and the effect on everyone collectively.

Such a movie nowadays would, I suppose, be judged as a boring flop. Too dry. Too factual. Nothing in it for 20-somethings to relate to! (ha ha)

I think we are living in a decaying society that has lost touch with reality. Our "art" is like something that you would expect to buy in the action figure department at WalMart.

That said, the new King Kong movie has a lot of heart...I'll say that. Pretty good.

Jack the Giant Killer - I showed it to the kids - they rolled about the floor at the really bad clay type monsters

little shop of horrors, princess bride, & young frankenstein always cheer me up

Tremors has some pretty funny moments. I love the scene where the survivalist couple finally get to use their entire inventory of deadly weaponry...the justification of a lifetime's work!
