Subject: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Amos Date: 23 Apr 02 - 12:38 AM I can't tell you how wonderfull the responses to the Mudcat Sampler CD rallying call have been. We got a ways to go, though!! As a reminder, here's the rough production schedule:
Collection of Candidates ---- up to end of May So get those numbers in!! So far the Blue Plate Special suggestion seems to be drawing acclaim fort a title candidate. That roster is still open, though! We are looking for volunteers with artsy talents to do the cover artwork. Need a visionary. The discussion to date can be found right on over here in Part II. "What do you think --- I like it!! :>)" Now one other little administrative issue, especially important for those who are concerned about the relative security of their identities. Unless specifically advised otherwise, this CD will have only Mudcat names on it. This means, unless you request otherwise, your Mudcat handle will be the artist mentioned on your cuts, and your realworld identity will be as unknown as it is on the 'Cat itself. So if you've been holdin' back, boyos and cowgirls -- now's the time to step up, sing out, and send off!! Lemme hear from ya, now!!! It's gonna be a world class concatenation, ya can count on it!!! Warmest regards, A Search for "MUDCAT CD" threads

Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: khandu Date: 23 Apr 02 - 12:54 AM So...I guess this means that "khandu!!! and other Catter's" is out. Oh well, maybe Time will yet name me "Man of the Year" for the Manatte thread or the Dutch Conspiracy Theory. Seriously, this is exciting!! I look forward to hearing my fellow Mudcatters do their things! Also, I think all of us should give a resounding round of applause to Amos for his enthusiasm and efforts to whip us into a frenzy. On the count of three,,,everyone now! One...two...THREE! (DEAFENING ROAR!!!!) khandu |

I mean, who else could lay claim to such a khandu attitude? I'm excited too, honestly... this gang means a lot to me, and you all deserve anything I can do to move things along in my own...um...Madcat way. Hey -- what're you doing goofing off at that monitor for -- you sent in your song yet??? C'mooon!! Le's roll on home!! A

From: Áine Date: 23 Apr 02 - 10:24 AM My vote is for 'Blue Plate Special' -- well, unless and until anyone comes up with something better ;-) Amos -- Is it permissible for entrants to normalize and compress their MP3s before sending them to you? From: michaelr Date: 23 Apr 02 - 08:10 PM I have Photoshop and Illustrator, and am a bit handy with it, so I'm volunteering to put together the graphics package. That's not to say I want to design it myself; folks could email me files (or snailmail artwork), and I could process it from there. Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Amos Date: 23 Apr 02 - 08:37 PM Dearest TGG: Foirgive for not answering your question. The only thing I would think would have to be done with a precompressed file would be setting the loudness so that it is on a par with the general levels of the other songs. Otherwise, he may produce as final as he wishes to!!! MichaelR -- what a kindly offer!! Thanks!! All you artistes with Mudcat sauce running in your veins, drum up a cover for this world-class loverly folkie CD and get in touch with MichaelR to coordinate review and production...will that work? If no objections, we can do it that way. Michael, the artists I know of in this universe are Fair Alice, the Gaelic Goddess Áine, fair Jen Ellen (but I think she worls mostly in real media like oils) -- and...well I don't know! I am sure there are scads!! And Peg wants to clligraph it!! BTW, MichaelR has just provided me with his own beautiful CD worth of fine tunes, which will certainly provide you with some happy listneing when the time comes!! Keep that big rig rolling, 'Catters all -- we're on the flip-flop, coming back to Teddy Bear!! Very best regards to you all, A. |

Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Willie-O Date: 24 Apr 02 - 10:36 AM OK, Amos, as you requested I have made the two songs "The Anna Grace" and "Spring On the Mississippi" freely downloadable from my mp3.com site Help yourself (selves) n enjoy. As you amass a collection of tracks from different sources, normalizing & equalizing them--mastering, in other words-- will be a matter of some concern for getting an overall sonic cohesiveness to the CD. It's just the kind of thing that we can't do in isolation, and you may find that you need to be more specific in your requirements for submitted format. Now that I have a CD burner (still virgin, I might add) I could burn the original track--whatever one you might want, or a few to choose from, as WAV files for maximum flexibility in the mastering process....maybe give it some thought and let us know what your PREFERRED format is. Best
|
Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Amos Date: 24 Apr 02 - 11:18 AM Thanks, Willie-O!! I'll download them tonight. My preferred format with experience to date is either a CD (the files appear as .cdda suffix, I think) or MP3 files. I can handle .wav, .aiff but not RealAudio formats using ITunes under OSX -- piece o'cake. The SW takes any of these and does the conversions. I can preset filters and levels for the burn as well, and I think we have sound talent (no pun intended) in line for doing a review of settings, blending, levels, compression for the final. Tapes can be handled by direct patch from audio out to record on Peak recording SW but there is often a noise level that has to be filtered out coming from the mechanical and analog side. There are a good number of singers out there who don't have the means to go digital. I can also accept MiniDisc recorder discs if they are compatible with my Sony MDLP. Minidiscs are not fully standardized across the industry as to format, as far as I know, either physically or logically -- the tech is still settling out. Now about deflowering your CD-burner, Willie-O ... :>) Never mind; I am trying to be well-behaved here, except for Max' birthday wish. Note: The Mudcat Global Cheerleading and Worldwide Song Acquisition Center and Compilation Service Unit (MGCWSACCU) will be off-line this weekend (most of it, anyway) but the thoughts will still be flying out there for y'all to get your songs onto any medium that works (except psychic ones -- they're way too much to handle!) and en route!! Warmest regards, A

Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Spartacus Date: 24 Apr 02 - 11:20 AM Amos, I've done some design work for folks in the past... I may be able to come up with something for the cover. Can I just do some illustrations, scan them, and e-mail them? Or do you need it ready to print with song titles and things included? P.S. did you get my songs? -Spartacus |
Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Amos Date: 24 Apr 02 - 12:30 PM Spartacus -- Send a PM to MichaelR on the desiogn work -- he'll sort out the logistics. At the end of the process, I'll need final art with the titles included OR final artwork laid out in such a way I can add the text stuff for notes and titles. Right now though, MichaelR is coordinating the art part. I'm at the office so I can't answer about received or not -- remind me what you sent? I think I did receive them but I normally send out an acknowledgement immediately so I will double check and PM you on it, OK?.

Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: MMario Date: 25 Apr 02 - 01:00 PM the "Blue Plate Special" was usually one of two things - either something the resteraunt was famous for; or a "daily special" |
Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 25 Apr 02 - 05:46 PM Katlaughing has been kind enough to agree to convert my cassette tape, and will forward the results, she says above, next week. Thanx, Kat! Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Sorcha Date: 25 Apr 02 - 07:29 PM Hey, Dave, I just sent a whole tape and gave Amos final cut rights. I don't care what he uses or how much. How much probably depends on how many of us send stuff in. |
Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Lonesome EJ Date: 25 Apr 02 - 10:05 PM We could call the British Edition Ploughman's Lunch and feature a CD with cheddar, sliced apple, Branston's Pickle, and a pint of bitters. Or how about the Australian version...three barbecued shrimp, a mutton pastie, chips, a jar of Vegemite, two scones, beefsteak, mug of Foster's and call it Snack? |
Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Cappuccino Date: 26 Apr 02 - 02:44 AM I was going to suggest that the most accurate contemporary British version would be to call it Tikka Masala, and then realised I sounded racist! Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Jeanie Date: 26 Apr 02 - 05:15 AM Vegemite ! So much better than Marmite (the eating variety, not McGrath's song, which cannot be beaten) ! Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: treewind Date: 26 Apr 02 - 06:33 AM Talking of a UK version, how is the UK distribution going to be done? Assuming the CD's are made in one pressing run, it would make sense to ship a big box of them here in one go and distribute them by inland mail to mudcatters who want a copy. Is it going to go into commercial distribution and retail too? Er, not sure if I'm volunteering for anything, just wondered... Anahata |
Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Amos Date: 28 Apr 02 - 09:12 PM Dave: Thanks for letting me know your preferences -- I will certainly respect them. We'll be using MP3s as the burn source and I don't know how many we will be able to squeeze into one disk, and may even go to two. The UK distirbution problem is noted as an issue. I am waiting to hear from Emperor Maximillian the 30, as to how he wants handle the whole distro thing. More on this one later, PK??? Hey!! Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Stephen L. Rich Date: 29 Apr 02 - 12:52 AM Is there anybody out there who can draw? It just dawned on me that we don't need a photograph, as such, of the proposed cover (the whole checkered tablecloth thing. see earlier in this thread for description). If there's a 'Catter or two who is good with a pencil or a brush or whatever who can draw or paint the blue plate special we're off and running!! Even if it's in black and white we're cool. I'm fairly certain that static had it's effect on all of us at an early age as we are mostly gettin' pretty old and grew up with it and managed to keep our interest in at least one thing for most of our lives. '57 rusted out buick, speaker in the middle of the dash, am radio dial glowin' in the dark and Stevie Wonder playin' "Fingertips" and Wilson Pickett hollerin' about the Land of a Thousand Dances. Yowzah, Gimme that static. Mind altering experience fer an twelve year old. Never got over it. |

Or when I spent the summers in Surf City, N.J. clamming by day and partying by night, it was WABC out of N.Y. City with Jerry Blavett, the "Geeter with the Heater". As to the ride: anything we could bum off an adult would do just fine. PAAARRRRRTTTTTEEEEEEE.... |

Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Homeless Date: 01 May 02 - 06:03 PM To everyone who complimented my artwork, thank you very much indeed, but I can't take credit for it all - LEJ did the hard part, coming up with the idea and describing it. All I did was put mouse to pad, push a few buttons, and move a few pixels. I've been giving him previews so that he can make suggestions toward what he wanted (which is why that was out there). It's his creativity, I'm only doing the gruntwork.
hesperis - I used an older version of Bryce. It used to be made by Metacreations, but now Corel has it. You can learn more about it here, bryce if you're interested. Or do a search for it - there are lots of forums and sites dedicated to it. And I'm with michaelr on this one - there's more artists out there. I'd like to see a few other people's creations myself. |

From: Amos Date: 01 May 02 - 06:23 PM This rollicking steam-powered creation on the part of the entire Mudcat community is continuing over here for those who prefer shorter threads! We're doing great so far, and i am really grateful to all those stellar Cats who are chiming in with music and help of all kinds to make this one come true!! Regards, A |

Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: alison Date: 02 May 02 - 04:03 AM well call me picky too... but I have never heard of a "blue plate special" either...... and no I don't have any other alternatives to suggest... I do like the idea........ but at the risk of being shot down... its too American........... and although I know that the majority of 'catters are from the US it sort of rules out many of the other countries represented at mudcat from the title...... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: MUDCAT CD III: Keep It Rollin' Home! From: Amos Date: 02 May 02 - 04:44 PM Alison: No-one gets to shoot down anything on this. Your viewpoint is especially valuable, since you have put in so many miles being chased over hill and dale by Biggus Mickus!! What do they call it in Strine, then, when a diner has a special meal that they offer, usually for a low price, nothing fancy to it but solid grub on special? A |
