Altan was in our town this week for a concert (Athens OH is a small college town and we don't get many Celtic bands here--SIGH!!!) It was of course incredible, and they got a great reception. Hopefully they'll be back. If anyone has been waffling about seeing them this round, don't. Just go.

DS sang --I love it when he does, and it's fairly rare that he does, I think-- this beautiful Gaelic song about St. Bridget-- with a great lead-in about the Goddess Bride (SP?) and her reinventing herself as the saint when Ireland became Christian. Anyway it is a gorgeous song, and I don't do Gaelic, so I'd like the words, the tune and a translation if possible. (I didn't notice that they had recorded it on any of the CDs they had for sale... Does anyone know if they have?)

I believe it is on Daithi's excellent CD "A Heart Made of Glass". If you love his singing, you need this CD!

It has always been my favorite song by Daithi--the album was on Green Linnet, but I'm afraid I don't know much about the availability of it now.

Thank you so much! Glad to hear that it is available on CD. I will look for it. Since it is worked out so nicely in English it lokks like I will be able to sing it too. Does the English version fit with the tune well?

That's a really old song, I believe, as in centuries. I don't know about the tune, though.

When I've heard Daithi perform the song live, he tells a story that the song is either quite ancient, or possibly 20 years old. ;-) I can't quite recall where he found the song, but it seems to me he got it at a summer college in Co. Donegal. While many hymns are over a 100 years old, most which have survived in Ireland have been composed more recently.

As to the CD--I had the chance since yesterday to check the web for it. Green Linnet only has it on cassette. However, Amazon has it one CD for (if I'm remembering correctly) around $22.00!!! Ouch!

I haven't heard Altan's recording but Eithne Ní Ullacháin recorded this song with La Lugh.

apparently Gabhaim Molta Bhríde is not all that old as traditional songs go, although the lyrics are written in an old style
The song is attributed to Tomás Ó Flannghaile (1846-1916. Ó Flannghaile was born in Co Mayo, and was a native speaker of Irish, but he was only about 6 years old when his family moved to Manchester. Ó Flannghaile later taught at a training college in London. Among his other songs was "Dóchas Linn Naomh Pádraig", a hymn to St Patrick.
