Subject: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Apr 02 - 02:55 PM You are cordially invited to participate in the 2nd Annual Spring Shanty Swap at the China Sea Marine Trading Co, 10 Dana St, in the heart of the Old Port, Portland, ME (207) 773-0081) on Saturday, May 18th, gathering together at 4:00 PM and continuing until the propriators Capt. Bunker and Sharon kick us out. Members of Roll & Go will lead off with a few songs and then others may lead a song, request a song, or snore. This wonderful shop is chocker-block full of nautical antiques and oddities, straight out of the twilight zone. It's a great place to sit and sing sea music. And we'd like to know who is attending. Refreshments welcomed! For those who want to come in early, Roll & Go will be performing a couple of sets at the Portland Public Market from 12-noon to 2 PM to help celebrate their annual sea food festival. |

Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Celtic Soul Date: 23 Apr 02 - 05:33 PM *You* have a "China Sea Trading Co."??? Do tell? It's gotta be run by the same guy who had one down here in Baltimore. I had heard he moved to Maine! Little antique place with nautical antiques? In any case, too long a commute, but I'd *love* to be there!! Give the old salt a wink from the Pyrates Royale. If it is the same guy, he should know us fairly well...we shopped there often enough. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 23 Apr 02 - 07:46 PM I think it's the same person. Chaley could probably tell you more. Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Uncle Jaque Date: 23 Apr 02 - 10:34 PM Celtic Soul; Yes indeed, that is the very same Cpt. "Steve" Bunker who ran his shop down by the pier for many a year before returning to Maine with his First Mate Sharon and two parrotts. No doubt he'll be glad to hear from you, and remembers well. I have spent hours enthralled by his tales of adventure and thoughts; he is surely one of the most interesting fellows I have ever had the priviledge to associate with. I think we may have a photo of a group of us including Cpt. Steve on the Mudcat photo album here someplace, which shows a little of the inside of the shop. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 24 Apr 02 - 08:58 AM Last time around Cpt. Bunker's giant rainbow parrot was in attendance, spicing up the proceedings with his cryptic comments. A word of caution - be sure you are not seated underneath the parrot roost. If anyone needs more specific directions, we are happy to comply. Otherwise just make your way down to Portland's waterfront. The store's just a stone's throw away from Widgery Wharf, and there's a new song about that, and, guess what, it's got a great chorus! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Uncle Jaque Date: 25 Apr 02 - 07:04 AM I'll just bet it does at that, Mr. Noble! And if I might furthur speculate, that this new composition alone shall be well worth the price of admission!
Save me a hunk of deck next to the smiling wooden mermaid with the protrubulant mammilliaries, won't ye Mates? I'll be along presently... AAaaarggh! Gruffly (yet facieciously); Uncle Jaque |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Bat Goddess Date: 25 Apr 02 - 08:01 AM Halleluyah! ("Halleluyah, halleluyah, halleluyah, glory three times also and amen twice") Finally a shanty sing date when both Curmudgeon and I can get there! And we WILL! (It's conveniently scheduled our only open date in May and June.) Linn |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Celtic Soul Date: 25 Apr 02 - 08:10 AM Well, please do say hello for us! We miss him and that place a great deal. He had the most amazing treasures, and you're right about his tales. He is one amazing old salt. Good to hear he's where he wants to be, and happily keeping shop whilst spinning his yarns. :D |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Apr 02 - 09:19 AM Cpt. Bunker's yarns? No way! Only the unvarnished truth about his exploits and those of his old Baltimore pals...Let's have another round of Bertha's mussels! Looks like we're gonna have a great turnout. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: GUEST,Charlene Giroux Date: 25 Apr 02 - 12:45 PM ...the past Shanty evening was a grand one indeed. Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Uncle Jaque Date: 25 Apr 02 - 09:59 PM And a welcome, refreshing cool breeze it is at that, Friend charlene!
What a pleasant surprise to meet you here on the good old ship "Mudcat"; please do pull up a sea-trunk, get registered as a "Regular" here, and make yourself at home, won't you? |

Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: SINSULL Date: 28 Apr 02 - 06:14 PM I said "forgot" not "Forget!" Damn! When did you get so sensitive? See you on the 18th. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 28 Apr 02 - 07:44 PM DON'T forget Jeri! But she'd better have her voice back by then. And then there's her guitar.... |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 28 Apr 02 - 08:39 PM I ought to have my voice back by then. If I recall correctly, the allergies let up sometime around the middle of May last year. Do I have to learn sea songs on guitar? |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: GUEST,karen k Date: 29 Apr 02 - 12:14 AM This is a possibility for me. Will be going to a Jean Ritchie concert in Foster, RI on Fri. night. So Maine on Sat. just might work. Sure hope so. It will be great to see some folks I know and meet some new ones. Save me a seat! |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Apr 02 - 08:36 AM Jeri- if you're going to do sea songs with your guitar, you best first soak the guitar over night in a basin of salt water, adding a forkful of sea weed, and a lobster or two or alternatively a squigly. Now when I was growing up on Georgetown Island my brother and I used to set one old guitar out regularly with our lobster traps, and we were amazed what we'd find inside next morning. As Kendall would say: "Strip off the take and set 'er again!" Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Apr 02 - 11:55 AM An old singing friend Katherine Rhoda is planning to attend; she has one powerful voice. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 29 Apr 02 - 05:16 PM Charlie, it won't work - guitars float. It's be up there, at the top of the trap and the lobsters would crawl around on the bottom. I'm also fairly sure it would deaden the strings. Banjos, on the other hand, sink. And it would deaden the strings. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 29 Apr 02 - 05:16 PM If you can't sing any SEA songs with your guitar you should be prepared to sing a "C" song with it. We really will need more room this time Charlie. It you get a chance to talk to Cap'n Steve you might warn him. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Apr 02 - 05:44 PM Sorry, Jeri, what I said above was confusing. We set the guitar by itself (not inside a lobster trap) with a couple of bricks inside to weigh it down. We probably would have done better if we'd stuffed some bait inside too but I thunk we done alright. For some reason them rare blue lobsters was especially intrigued by the guitar. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 29 Apr 02 - 05:45 PM My guitar usually ends up sitting in the corner. It will be good to see Kathrine again. Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 30 Apr 02 - 12:36 PM Sorry folks, while I play around with my new toy. I spent last night laying in bed imagining brine-soaked spruce encrusted with crustaceans and bronze wound strings being slowly eaten away by salt and I had trouble sleeping. Charley, what makes guitars more appealing to blue lobsters than say, banjos, for instance? Just thought I'd ask...... Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 30 Apr 02 - 01:02 PM Well, I didn't get to say how much I enjoyed the session in Portsmouth. for the ride, and it was good to see and Brían |

Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 01 May 02 - 09:16 AM Looks like you're having fun, Brían. The reference to "blue lobsters" above? Obviously, it was an old blues guitar we deep-sixed. You know one of those big boxes strung with piano strings designed to rip the skin off tender fingers. One of my old Portland neighbors, David, may be attending the Swap; ask him to sing the Georges Bank song he used to do with his trio. It's a beaut! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: SINSULL Date: 01 May 02 - 10:58 AM Charlie, Thank you for playing chauffeur on Saturday. See you all at China Seas. Mary |

Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 01 May 02 - 07:55 PM I won't be at Mystic! (sob!) Rotten kids, grumble, grumble, grumble. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: SINSULL Date: 02 May 02 - 07:21 PM Naemanson! The only thing you have to do in this life is die. All the rest is an option. Choose Portland or Mystic...and accept the consequences. Any chance of the girls making it to the chantey/shanty/chanty sing? M. REFRESH |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 03 May 02 - 04:51 PM I have a choice. I know that. I can either be in Mystic on the first weekend in June or be at my daughter's high school graduation. If I choose Mystic I will have scarred my daughter psychologically and brought down the wrath of my family and my ex wife. If I choose the graduation I will spend lots of money and miss Mystic. The choice is obvious. That doesn't mean I can't grumble about it. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 03 May 02 - 07:07 PM We all have to make choices. Myself i would love to be in Ireland right now improving my Irish and collecting songs, however, I have some obligations in Portland. I have some people I really care about who I need to help through some difficulties. When this is done, I amlooking forward to having a handicapped adaptable house to invite everyone to for some great music parties. In the mean time, I look forward to song cricles at the Observatory, China Sea and The Press Room. SEE YOU ALL THERE! Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: SINSULL Date: 03 May 02 - 08:31 PM Only a tease, Brett. It was the "rotten kids" part that got me. Damn! If it isn't drugs or dangerous friends, it's graduating. They never give you a moments peace. Enjoy the graduation, Dad. Congratulations! |

Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Uncle Jaque Date: 07 May 02 - 05:12 PM This is shaping up to be a real hoot! Should alternative (more capacious) digs be in order, we might want to start arranging same - the sooner the better. I think we had about 17 at one of the better attended previous hoots, and I think with Steve's reduced floorspace, that that was pushing the population density envelope just a bit, and might be considered maximum carrying capacity - to borrow one of our Daughter's Biological terms. I still wish the Captain could wheedle us a full - rigged sailing ship to sing aboard!
It seems to me that I heard somewhere that banjos make passing fair crab - traps, although you need the kind with a resonator on the back to keep them from escaping. Bait is optional; the residual eau' de Folkie seems to draw them in pretty well all by itself.
Sins; Are you going to be able to hitch a hawser onto ol' Cpt. Kendall's forward cleat and tow him along? He needn't sing to be entertaining; just having him set there and looking funny is enough to capsize most of the crew in hilarity!
I thought that the Mystic Music Fest was about the 3rd weekend in June, and was considering taking the RV down if we can get it patched up in time. Am I missing something here?
|
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 07 May 02 - 10:49 PM Jaque, the Mystic Weekend is the SECOND weekend in June. This year it is 7, 8, and 9 June. As if missing it weren't bad enough Charley Noble has wangled a place in one of the workshops! Way to go, Charley! |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 08 May 02 - 10:11 AM Spoke with Capt. Bunker at China Marine Trading Co. again yesterday. He is preparing for a full hold of nautical singers. If it gets too outrageously crowded, we can always shift more of his inventory out on the street.BG The Roll & Go contingent should include myself, Brett Burnham, Eli Dale and Dick Dufresne. But I'm not sure how many of us will survive our gig at the Sea Food Festival at the Portland Public Market earlier in the afternoon, especially after we regale them with my renditions of "Dramamine" and "Fish Fingers." Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 08 May 02 - 09:34 PM I have the whole day free so I can come and heckleyou folks at the Portland Public Market. Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 09 May 02 - 10:38 AM Careful Brien, we don't hesitate to drag people out of the audience and on to the stage to sing with us. Heckle at your own risk. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 11 May 02 - 11:11 AM Brien, for what porpoise would you heckle us? What joy! Only 7 days before we congregate! Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: CET Date: 12 May 02 - 06:27 AM Alas, we will be in Edinburgh recovering from jet lag. Otherwise, we would be with you. We had a wonderful time last year. Edmund |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Bat Goddess Date: 15 May 02 - 04:30 PM Hey Charley! Do I have to bring my rubber squid collection? Or should I just wear my squid earrings? (Or perhaps my shark earrings with the lower torso of a male swimmer dangling from their mouths . . .) What type of snack ware (GeekMeet term) and vocal lubrication is encouraged? Linn |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 15 May 02 - 05:06 PM Linn- Any refreshments are welcome. The chocolate group is not well represented yet. I'll bring all three of my Nova Scotia squiglies. Maybe we can get up a chorus line! Roll & Go will be represented by only 4 of our 6 members but we can still make a lot of noise; Norris is off to North Carolina re-assembling his latest mad invention and Jennifer is off to the UK. That leaves us with Charlie, Brett, Dick, and Eli. Is Barry Finn coming? I can't seem to reach him via e-mail. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 15 May 02 - 06:24 PM Charley, you ever have one of those moments of near-clarity when everything falls into some semblance of line and the whole world is making a slight bit of sense? I just had one of those moments. I think it has to do with one or two brain cells being operational. I called Barry's house. Got Justine. Passed message to Barry to please check this thread. (Or PM/e-mail/call me if he couldn't find it.) By the way, the last e-mail address I gave you should have worked. I'd bring something chocolate, only it would go in the car and come out in ME. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 15 May 02 - 07:43 PM Jeri, thanks for relaying the message to Barry Finn. Be great if he could make it! If not chocolate, bring some liquid refreshment. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 15 May 02 - 09:31 PM Thank Neptune someone had the decency to raise this thread. I was about to come in with HEY IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?. I am looking forward to this and may even be inspired to make a nice soda bread. Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 15 May 02 - 09:47 PM I have a really cute squid Beanie Baby named Wiggly who hasn't been out of the house much. He/she/it deserves a night out. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: SINSULL Date: 15 May 02 - 10:57 PM No bourbon balls, this trip - the recipe is still packed somewhere. But I do have some Lindt truffles. See you on Saturday. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Bat Goddess Date: 16 May 02 - 08:09 AM It's getting dangerously close to the bottom of the list again. Anywho, I'll bring a couple representative specimens from my vulcanized octo- and decapod collection. Linn |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: curmudgeon Date: 17 May 02 - 08:17 AM Could someone post more specific directions for those of us unfamiliar with Portland? Is there an updated list of who's going to be there? Looking forward to a great session. See you all tomorrow -- Tom |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 17 May 02 - 08:47 AM With regard to directions, if you're arriving from the South, exit the turnpike at the 1st South Portland Exit, turn onto I-295 and exit to the Waterfront, following the small Waterfront signs, with the Fore River on your right, pass the Rufus Deering Lumber Yard on your left, the Portland Fish Exchange on your right (stop and exchange fish if you like), and then park anywhere you can find a space (bring quarters-limit of two hours until 6 pm). The waterfront street is called Commercial Street; you're looking for 10 Dana St., on a one block street that connects with Commercial St. in the vicinity of Widgery Wharf, Dimillo's floating restaurant is half a block beyond Dana St. If you turn left up Dana St., you're sure to see the China Marine Trading Co. on your left. Avoid Shipwreck & Cargo at the corner unless you wish to visit the guano isles off Peru; it's run by some crimp named Shanghai Brown. If you're completely lost call the store at 207-773-0081. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Dan Schatz Date: 17 May 02 - 11:13 AM I'm hoping to be there too. I haven't made one yet, but it looks good for tomorrow. I'd like to do this just once before (*sniff*) leaving New England this July. Dan |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: SINSULL Date: 17 May 02 - 12:00 PM Damn! My surprise shipment of cat 'o nine tails won't arrive in time. Guess we will have to stick to keel hauling for singing off key. See you Saturday. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 17 May 02 - 05:06 PM Not to worry, Sinsull! I'm sure Capt. Bunker has an appropriate nautical accessory or two. If anyone can make it an hour early, around 3 pm, you could help with shifting inventory around so we have space to sing. I'll be there at 3 pm sharp. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 17 May 02 - 11:12 PM I just thought I'd add this CLICKY THANG to show everyone our Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 18 May 02 - 09:01 AM Nicely done, Brían! Next time we'll have to add a close-up of the good captain's parrot. Looks like a dreary day for the beach. Guess I'll go somewhere and sing some sea songs. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Uncle Jaque Date: 18 May 02 - 02:29 PM All Hands on deck!!! ((((*BUMP*))))! Prob'ly won't bring guitar this time, as we don't want to get it soggy; we're rusty enough as it is! Aunt Mahthah & me might be rolling in a little late so as to find a parking spot. Do we have to feed the meter on Sat.? What's the song with the piano leg in it? Uncle Jaque |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 18 May 02 - 02:36 PM Will bring guitar. Will bring fiddle. Will bring voice - AND I GOT ONE! The lovely snow we got (it's almost June, dammit!) have completely cleared the air and my sinuses feel GREAT! I just better get in gear because I'm already running late! |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: SINSULL Date: 18 May 02 - 02:58 PM Not feeling my best today. If a nap and some soup doesn't improve my disposition, I will bow out. No point in introducing authentic sea-sickness to the proceedings. Damn - I even learned a new song for the occasion. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 18 May 02 - 11:18 PM I am home now and almost ready for bed but feel I need to let others know what happened. We had a great gathering. Sinsull didn't make it. Too bad. I hope you are feeling better, my dear. Jeri did make it but says her voice didn't. She still sounded pretty good though and held up her end of the singing very nicely. We had a good solid crew of singers with a very nice rotating audience of shoppers who seemed to enjoy themselves as well. We started around 4:00 and sang through the evening with a short break for some very good pizza thoughtfully arranged by our hosts. There must have been fifteen or twenty people there. Many were friends of old and several were new friends. The youth of America were well represented (and that is something I love to see) as well as a good proportion of us old farts. The Mudcat was also well represented. Present were Charley Noble, Dahlin, Brien, Bat Goddess, Curmudgeon, Uncle Jaque, Jeri, Dan Schatz, and myself. I think we also alerted some people to the existence of this site and may have sparked a few new members. Thanks so much to the proprietors of the China Sea Marine Trading Company who hosted the gathering. We could have done this anywhere but the shop has such a great atmosphere that even singing on a schooner might not have been an equal experience. Thanks especially to Singapore the macaw who spiced up the air with time squawks and calls. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 19 May 02 - 01:09 AM Aa wonderful evening! My sinuses cleared out, but my vocal cords didn't get over the allergic irritation of a couple of months so quickly. Didn't stop me. (There's a parody of "How Can I Keep From Singing" that needs to be written.) I'm thinking of a new career as sign language interpreter for the silly. I saw a couple of cameras. There may be photos in our future! |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Uncle Jaque Date: 19 May 02 - 01:14 AM Geez, Sins; we had the green plastic bucket all ready fer ye, luv! T'would've added considerable color to a Roll & Go rendition of "Dramamine" (which they didn't do, but no doubt could have). But hope that you are feeling much better already without having to resort to such drastic measures. Our thoughts were with you and Kendall - you were missed, but hope that you will be back in the circle better than ever next time around. Also missed on deck was our "Vocal Artillery", Barry Finn; hope to see ye next voyage, Mate! It was probably one of our better "hoots", although it was getting distinctly crowded in that corner of the shop. Cpt. Steve assures us that his new barn in Gray is up and nearing completion, and will provide much more capacious digs for future Chanty sings while maintaining the nautical ambieance we have come to love so well, since it will be an overflow warehouse for all the lovely "stuff" that won't fit into the shop. He and Sharon also alluded to the availability of a cozy loft or corner stall for any too tired or "relaxed" from the festivities to safely drive home late at night - probably a welcome option to those travelling from afar. Y'know, a Chantysinger post - session slumber party sounds like an interesting proposition; we get to find out if we all fart and snore as well as we sing! Then We get to compare notes and share feedback over breakfast the next morning, and perhaps award prizes for the loudest snorer and .... well, that's about as far as i'd better go with that! Stay tuned! };^{)~
It was great to meet Bat Goddess and Crumudgeon, whose concertina seems to have survived a liberal annointing of Guinness from my tin dipper when Neamanson threw the darned cow at me... Ye shouldv'e seen Charlie Noble over in the corner fondling his horse, and occasionally checking the back of his banjo to see if any edible lobsers had become entangled therein. We've got pictures! There were a few others whose names I didn't catch, but who contributed fabulously to the musical virtuosity of the procceedings. Particularly impressive were a couple of young folks whom I don't recall seeing previously; the very talented chap with the 12-string (Mudcatter I think) and the pettite, pretty little dark - haired maiden who could belt out one heckkuvva chanty for her size! Who are these mystery Maestroes? Good time had by all;
|
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 19 May 02 - 01:33 AM The guy with the 12-string was Dan Schatz. He did a song I requested. I'd heard him sing it over 2 years ago at the FSGW Getaway and I really liked it. The dark-haired maiden was Jean. (Not sure if I spelled that right.) She comes to our Fri sessions at the Press Room. She'd been coming to for a while but sat quietly in the back. Then one night 2 or 3 months ago, she did a song and blew me away with that voice and delivery. Personally, I think the quality of her singing equals anything I've got on a CD. I also happen to know she occasionally reads Mudcat, so I'm probably going to embarrass the heck out of her, but so what. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 19 May 02 - 10:04 AM Sure was a nice shanty session, one of the best I've ever attended apart from Mystic, and one of the best environments for actually hearing people sing, even shy people. I'd also like to thank Sharon, Capt. Bunker, and Singapore, our gracious hosts who love this kind of music. I'm sure we'll be planning another session in a month or so, perhaps as part of an "Open Barn" celebration out at the China Sea Trading Co. rural annex and residence. And there's a host of related nautical music special events that are also happening in this area that we'll make an effort to highlight. Finally there's also evidence that the Roll & Go CD is finally ready for mass production, and that surely deserves a party or two. Anyone who is not already on the Roll & Go contact list, please PM me with your e-mail address and I'll see that you are added to the list. What joy! Singing all day with good people, and into the night! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 19 May 02 - 11:44 AM Jeri, thanks for giving us Jean's name. Her voice and delivery are absolutely wonderful. She and her friend Sarah, two very pretty and talented young women, stand to contribute a lot to the genre. (I only have it on Jeri's word that Sarah is talented but Jeri's word is as good as a bank vault as far as I am concerned.)

Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Uncle Jaque Date: 19 May 02 - 12:22 PM Glad all made it home safely. I can see why, Jeri, you liked Dan's song; I did too! If his and Jean's voices are not on a CD (individually or together)by now, your humble correspondant opines that they surely should be! Speaking of CD's, I would very much like to have one of R&G's new ones; at least I can get onto their arrangements so that we might be singing what sounds like the same song at future hoots! Charlie; How about one of your CD's for one of mine? It's that one we recorded last year when my Wife & Daughter bought me 5 hrs. of studio time for a Christmas gift. Despite never having done any recording other than into a cassette machine down cellar and having to pretty much rip through it without a lot of time for retakes, it came out pretty decently. Two of the tunes I did last night, "Mingualay Boat Song" and "Requiem" are on it, along with an ecclectic assortment of the other stuff I do. I learned brand new things, like "click tracks" (I took an immediate disliking to them and didn't use any) and hand signals for "Punch in" and "Punch out". The electronic wizzardry is just awesome. We noticed that Brian and one other in attendance were recording; I wonder if any Mudcat Tech Guru can figure a way to translate some of those recordings into Mp3 or WAV files we might link on to at somebody's website to download and listen to? The sound quality would leave a lot to be desired, but perhaps the recordings could be played over "Paltalk" at a predetermined time and date so that interested 'Catters might tune in to hear them. Combining pictures with sound samples might be a good way to share our fun with others who are unable to attend. I suppose this might serve as well with about any session that folks were willing to record and process. What say ye? |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 19 May 02 - 01:17 PM Yeah, that might be a good idea to get some decent recording equipment to record some of these events for posterity. Myself I make those recordings to steal anything good that comes my way ;-). It was great to see Katherine Rhoda again, I recall her singing from various other places we've been kicked out of or otherwise had a hand in closing or bringing under the wrecking ball. I thought that was a particularly splendid vaersion of GENERAL TAYLOR that the young woman behind me sang. It was great to see all the Press Room regulars. I, frankly couldn't hear anything wrong with Jeri's voice. I'd like to create a home page so we could show pictures of some of these events. I am planning to have some sort of a gathering involving music when our house is ready. I'll have more info when I have the details ironed out. There's a lot of unpacking and other various odds and ends to do... Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 19 May 02 - 02:36 PM Brian, that was the aforementioned "Jean." I can't believe she's only been singing a few short months...sounds like an old pro. I recall a recent discussion with someone about being able to spot "it" - whether a musician has "it" or not. If she doesn't have "it," I've never heard "it." She has an amazing voice to start out with, but she really hears what's going on. Also does some incredibly beautiful harmonies which could stand to be a wee bit louder, IMO. This is one thing about music that gives me great joy. It's not competitive, and hearing people sing or play beautiful music is like a brief parting of the curtain of the universe and seeing the magic that keeps everything going. One week, Sarah asked me if I sang "Fire Marengo." I said I had done it, but not for a long time and I wasn't too sure of the words. I thought she was asking me to sing it, but she wasn't. Jean had learned it and wanted to sing it, but didn't want to step on anyone's toes - Sarah was asking on behalf of Jean. I think this was in Feb or Mar, and Jean had never sung in the Press Room before (to my knowledge). I told her to go for it. (In my version of a perfect world, there would be no "repertoires," just singers and songs belong to whoever happens to sing them.) I don't know if she did it that night because I left early then missed the next couple of weeks. When I did finally hear her...well, she stood there, ready to start and I sort of expected a small, shy voice and perhaps some new-singer mistakes. What I heard was...well - YOU heard her!!! Unc, I really liked your "Requiem." I believe Dan could make a career of music if he wanted to, but he's happy with the career he does have. I also think in this age when everyone seems to have a CD, he really should have one - if ONLY to pass on the songs he writes. (His performances would be equally worth it.) I know I'd certainly love to learn some of them. He's got a gig coming up on June 7th which I'm going to try to make. Brian, thanks for the comment on my voice. I guess the roughness is something I mainly hear from inside my head and feel. I also need to learn I can sing a bit quieter in song circles. Wonderful night, and I'm looking forward to Capt Bunker's barn! |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 19 May 02 - 03:06 PM Brian, you are right. There is nothing wrong with Jeri's voice. She has a fine voice and a wonderful talent for writing and performing songs. Now if she would let go of her self doubt she would see that too. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 19 May 02 - 04:29 PM Naem, where did you hear the self doubt last night? |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Bat Goddess Date: 19 May 02 - 08:08 PM Sorry, been sleepy and lazy today -- got home after 11, to sleep around midnight and up at 5:30 for an 8 a.m. meeting. Arghhhh! If Jean doesn't check this thread, I think someone had better print it out for her! She has a wonderful voice and us "oldtimers" have been busy suggesting recordings and singers for her to listen to for grounding in the tradition (as well as for material). Uncle Jacque -- trade you Tom's tape "A Bottle Full for the Shantyman" for one of your CDs? Great also to hear Judy's storys (some with song) and Lynne's (don't know her last name / recently back from living in England) songs. New material! New material! What a great venue! And incredibly good to see Katherine Rhoda again (and finally meet her husband, Stan) -- Tom and I had last seen her at the festivals Tom organized at the White Horse Pub (Nere Ledge Inn in North Conway, NH). Katherine not only has a wonderful voice and repertoire, but plays (well!) some of the most eclectic and obscure instruments -- the ukelin, marxophone, etc. Lovely evening -- definitely worth today's sleep deficit. Incredible venue -- the barn (and the merchandise overflow) will definitely be dangerous! Hope there's enough ship's bells around for atmospherics! Hope Sinsull's feeling better, too! (And Kendall!!!) Missed them both last night. Linn

Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 19 May 02 - 09:35 PM What I shoulda said was "Naem, THANK YOU! Now, where did you hear the self doubt last night?" Confidence level's pretty good - at least I thought so. I just ain't got no manners! Where was Katherine Rhoda sitting? I got there late and so missed the introductions. If I didn't know folks previously, I still don't know them. SINSULL, I missed seeing/hearing you too. I hope you feel better today. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Barry Finn Date: 20 May 02 - 02:24 AM Whaaa,#@%$&+*&, sniffle, sniffle. Barry |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 20 May 02 - 08:37 AM Jeri - Katherine Rhoda was the tall woman seated to the left of me. She does have an incredible collection of archane musical instruments such as the Marxsophone, and one powerful voice when she lets it rip. And I do hope Lynne, another new singer, keeps in touch with us so we can alert her to future events, even if her British husband doesn't practicularly care for this type of music. I'm still chuckling over Capt. Bunker's story of being "adopted" by the ship's cat. Barry - you did miss a good one, but you can always organize a shanty party yourself. Do we see you at Mystic? Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: MMario Date: 20 May 02 - 09:23 AM "vocal artillary" - sounds like a very good description of Barry to me! |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 20 May 02 - 10:26 AM I did finally get to listen to the tape of the gathering I made this morning as I was eating my oatmeal. I did get a least one good song out of everyone and too much chatter in between. Jean's rendition of the song that ends with "Leave her, Johnny, leave her came out particularly well. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 20 May 02 - 10:30 AM £$%^!!! I'm all thumbs today! As I was trying to say, STRIKE THE BELL came out particularly well, especially where the bell bouy resonated half way through Uncle Jacque's verse. Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: MMario Date: 20 May 02 - 10:35 AM okay - I'm green. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 20 May 02 - 12:46 PM Speaking of GREEN, the Roll & Go memorial green bucket (for "Dramamine") came in handily when we needed something to collect money for pizza. China Sea Marine Trading Co. is a dangerous place to sing a song like "Strike the Bell" given the abundence of ship's bells hanging from the rafters. It's also a dangerous environment for an expensive concertina as Tom found out as Uncle Jacque spewed Guiness his way in the general merriment. Thanks again, Uncle Jacque for the piano leg. I'll be sure to pass it on to Bobbi for her broken token song. Any more memories to share? Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 20 May 02 - 05:03 PM I forgot to mention the vast array of bells and the rather interesting artifact Uncle Jacque brought back from the landfill. He was obviously taught to "Be Prepared" with his hatchet in his trunk. :-) Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 20 May 02 - 05:48 PM Green is good, MMario. Next time you can join us to avoid that unflattering color. Jeri, I'm sorry if my remark sounded negative. I shouldn't have made it in this forum. It's just that too often you hesitate to sing for reasons that seem more like self doubt than anything else. You are a wonderful singer with an excellent voice and delivery and I would rather hear more of you than not. AND IF ANYONE WANTS TO DISAGREE WITH ME I'LL MEET THEM OUTSIDE! (Rolling up sleeves and glaring at the assemblage.) |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 20 May 02 - 06:16 PM Well Naemie, I'll kick yer wee butt all by myself. Confidence, shmonfidence! (And I can't really expect you to have noticed anything different during the course of one evening.) Charley, thanks for Katherine's position on the chart. Lightish auburn hair and yes, I remember her singing! After almost everybody was gone, Capt Bunker talked of his time in the Korean army, and then his service in VietNam among the Montagnards. I liked his story about the ship's cat too, and the tales of Singapore and his other fowl friends. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Uncle Jaque Date: 20 May 02 - 11:36 PM Jeri Deah; please count me among your host of loyal fans! I do adore that full, rich, resonant voice, and would love to hear it more often. Whot you might refer to as "roughness", I percieve as a luxurious, warm "texture"; akin to fine velvet, or a sweet hot chocolate on a snowy Winter's eve by the wood fire. It doeth this embittered old Yankee heart wonderous good. And thanks for the positive feedback on "Requiem"; I have to share the credit with Robert Louis Stevenson who wrote the poem in the 1880's - the melody just sort of "flowed" out of the guitar, and surprised me as much as anybody. that hasn't happened for a long time, but I'm glad it did for Old Friend Lloyed Carpenter late of Randolph, NH, to whom it is dedicated. The Hunter, home from the hill.
Batgoddess: You're on, Deah; PM me a snailmail address and when I burn off a batch of "Home from The Hill" CD in the near future, we'll dispatch one off tae ye! And my appologies again for the annointing of Toms' lovely little concertina! I just want everybody to know that 'twas not I that "spewed Guinness" all over it, (we kin still 'old our grog as well as ever, Mates!) but the wave action in my tin camp "mucket" resulting from spontanious, reflexive movement resulting from my perception of a high - velocity ballistic, incoming cow launched by one of the mischievious Roll & Go Crew members on the other side of the circle. Well, OK; it was a stuffed cow... milk AND stout (and 500 pounds of beef) on Curmudgeon's concertina might have been much worse! We were much relieved, by the way, to hear said concertina sounding as lovely as ever post - Guinnessing. Brian; I sure hope you can convert some of those tapes to shareable files (I have a few programs that might do that if u don't)and find it in your fine, generous Irish heart to share them... and not hog them all for yourself! We wouldn't want any rude noises into your cannie wee microphone during subsequent sessions, now would we?
We've heard of Opera Singers breaking a goblet with harmonic resonances, but do I really get an old brass bouy bell howling along? Reckon I'm a daisy if i do, eh? Neat!
Speaking of "Gifts", that wee beauty Jean surelay has a special one! Aemen. And we look forward to hearing that sweet, clear voice again this side of Jordan!

Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: GUEST,Guest seadog Date: 21 May 02 - 11:01 AM Just curious...What song ends with Leave her Johnny, leave her? |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 21 May 02 - 11:40 AM It's not just the ending but also the title: Leave Her, Johnny. So, Jeri, you want to kick my "wee butt", do you? Be careful, kid, I may have to take you down! I fight like an avenging angel when it comes to defending one of my favorite singers. Of course the conflict may look like the last fight scene in Star Wars - Episode II where Christopher Lee takes on Yoda. If you haven't seen it you need to. Lee looks like he is fighting several Yodas all at once, or maybe he is fighting a swarm of bees all carrying light sabers. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 21 May 02 - 01:15 PM Uncle Jacque- "...incoming cow launched by one of the mischievious Roll & Go Crew members on the other side of the circle. Well, OK; it was a stuffed cow..." That's udderly ridiculous! I saw no cow being hurled and having grown up on a dairy farm I'm well aware that they have no wings. What WERE you drinking? Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Charley Noble Date: 22 May 02 - 08:47 AM There are a number ofsea music special events happening in the next month in New England that I'm aware of: Danny and Joyce McLeod will be doing a house concert at "Westhaven" in Wells, ME, on Thursday, May 30th at 7:30pm. $10 gate (all proceeds go to performers). Reservations are required. By e-mail or phone. < Mystic Sea Music Festival: 6/6 to 6/9 (see related thread for details) Kennebunk, ME, Songs of Sail Festival, 6/14 to 6/15, with mini-concerts during the day at Federal Jack's Tavern (Kennebunkport) and evening concerts at Kennebunk Town Hall; performers include many of the same folks featured at Mystic Sea Music Festival. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 22 May 02 - 10:37 AM Uncle Jacque, I'd be glad to dig up some tapes and loan them to ya for posterity's(no pun intended, Naem')sake. In fact, maybe we should form some sort of a commitee to figure out how to make some decent, though informal recordings of our events. I noticed George was sitting behind us with headphones and some sort of blue box in his hand. I suppose he would be rather bold to be listening to a Red Sox game while everyone else was singing, so I suppose he was recording us, too. Maybe we should ask him what kind of equipment he was using. Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Naemanson Date: 22 May 02 - 03:07 PM Be carefull guys. The idea is to enjoy our music and the company. When you start with equipment you could end up tending to the equipment and losing the sponteneity of the evening. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Brían Date: 22 May 02 - 05:32 PM Point well taken, Naem. I am hoping to avoid that very predictament. I have however seen too many wonderful events dissolve into thin air after the chairs get stacked back into the corner. Let's come up with a no-brain way to save some of this for posterity.... Brían |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: SINSULL Date: 22 May 02 - 06:21 PM Speaking of equipment...what am I supposed to do with a half dozen cat o'nine tails? Jeri - are youa nd Barry doing a session on sea chanteys at the Getaway? These might convince people to join in, shout out, maybe. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Jeri Date: 22 May 02 - 06:33 PM So that's 64 tails in all? I suspect it's someone else's turn next year. Buy a nice leather outfit and some stiletto heels. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 May 02 - 07:26 PM By the way, Charlie, "Westhaven" is decidedly in York, not Wells. But Danny & Joyce are definitely worth driving a little further south (if you're in Maine) to see. Wonderful people as well as great performers. Unfortunately, I'll be in Milwaukee and will miss them. Curmudgeon (Tom Hall) is performing at the 3rd annual Songs of Sail this year -- and you can check out the festival at www.brickstoremuseum.org/songsofsail.shtml. Linn |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: SINSULL Date: 22 May 02 - 08:11 PM HMMMM Stiletto heels and rubber stockings with whip in hand...middle age is a bitch! |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Uncle Jaque Date: 22 May 02 - 10:34 PM Suggestion; now that we are in post - session mode and over 100 posts to this thread, might one of ye more talented than I at creating "blickies" start a continuation thread of "Maine & NH Sea Music" or something along those lines, so that we could retire this one? I'd like to see such a generic conversation going on here in between events, at least over the Summer months.
Point on recording issues well taken indeed; I once considered video taping a session, but then thought better of it as not everybody is comfortable being "spontanious" with a camera lens staring at 'em for sure; certainly new - comers, and we surely don't want to scare any of those away. One of those big, fuzzy mics hanging on a boom in front of their faces just might present a certain intimidation factor as well, we suppose, and should, I opine, be avoided. I think that open (as was done - it was perfectly obvious that we were being taped, so that any objection could have been raised had it been an issue) but discrete audio taping can preserve a significant portion of the experience without compromising the personal space of participants. It might be considerate, however, to collectively advise the assembled hoardes at the git-go that the session is being recorded, for who & why, and if anyone is less than comfortable with that the group may choose to request no recording, or the individual concerned may request to have recording suspended when it is their turn to lead or perform. I have heard wonderous reports of these new - fangled mini - CD recorders being the comparable or smaller size than popular casette recorders, yet achieving near studio - quality sound recording. What experience do we have out there regarding such "low profile" session recording? Aye, Brian; I would like to play with some of those tapes or cpoies thereof if I may; I have a couple of those downloaded "ripper" and "audio file format transformers" I'd like to play with. Oh; when I said "We have pictures", I lied. Not intentionally, mind ye; when I checked the camera last night, it was found completely devoid of film! Do I feel STOOOupid or what? DUH!!! We sure hope Bat Goddesses' film was in her camera, and comes out all right! |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Swap in Portland, ME From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 May 02 - 07:55 AM Yargle! I was looking forward to your pictures! All of my cameras let me know when there's no film inside (though I've come close to duplicating your filmlessness), but my "bar camera" (the little waterproof I was using) gave me some very questionable results the last time I used it. I hope it was something like out of date film or something like that. I'll know in about a week when the first roll (sorry, just the end of it was Saturday night). Still have to finish off the roll in the camera and I'll be in Milwaukee for 2 weeks and out of e-touch -- no Mudcat! what am I going to DO?!? -- til I get back. Linn |
