Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: michaelr Date: 24 Apr 02 - 09:00 PM Okay, I'm back. Try this: G - G/F# - C (or Em) - G C - C/B - Am - D G - G/F# - C - G C - G - D - G D - D - G - G C - C/B - Am - D G-C-G - G-G/F#-C C - G - D - G As to the G/F# - you can play it as a descending run on the low E string, or you can catch the F# on the D string (4th fret) with your pinkie, or you can substitute a partial Bm chord. Hope this helps! Michael |

Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: GUEST,Don Meixner Date: 01 Nov 06 - 12:57 AM This is how I have done it for a few years now. It works well for me. I have substituted the La Las with a guitarline that mimics the la las. Don MEN of WORTH (Archie Fisher) Le(G)ave the land behind, laddie, better days to find The co(C)mpanies have the mon(G)ey and they'll so(Am)on teach you the ski(D7)lls Gre(G)en fields fall away, the forties and the brae Be a mud(C)man or a rou(G)stabo(EM)ut, they'll so(D)on teach you to dri(G)ll But wh(D)o will tend me sheep when I'(C)m far o'er the de(G)ep? On the Ne(C)ptune or The Sea(G)Quest when the sn(Am)ow comes to the h(D7)ill, La ....G///// //C//// /GC///G////D////G Leave the fishing trade, lads, there's money to be made The hand-line and the Shetland yawl are of a bygone day Come to Aberdeen; sights you've never seen! Be a welder on the pipeline or a fitter on the Quay But when the job is over and your boat rots on the shore How will you feed your family when the companies go away? La .... There's harbors to be built, lads, rigs to tow and tilt To rest upon the ocean bed like pylons in the sea Pipeline to be laid and a hundred different trades That'll pay a decent living wage to the likes of you and me I know you're men of worth; you're the best that's in the north Not men of greed, but men who need the work that's come your way We'll pump it to the shore, a new industry is born Old Peterhead and Cromarty will never be the same I know you're men of worth; you're the best that's in the north Not men of greed, but men who need the work that's come your way La .... Note: "We'll pump it to the shore" I know this line is incorrect but here in the middle of New York State it makes sense and I don't have to translate an odd name which I'm unsure of anyway. |
Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: Seaking Date: 01 Nov 06 - 04:21 AM It's years since I last played this but I think the 'we'll pump it to the shore' (which works well in context) is 'From Flotta to Kishorn' referring to the oil terminal at Flotta on the Orkney Islands. The Kishorn Yard was a fabrication yard on the west coast for oil platforms at Loch Kishorn and operated from 1975 and closed around 1997 I think. Chris (who 'pumps it ashore') |
Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: GUEST,Don Meixner Date: 01 Nov 06 - 07:46 AM Seaking, Do the chords work pout for you when done this way? Those are the names I thought were correct. In my gang it was easier to "pump it" than explain where Flotta was. Lazy I know but then I am a musician. Perhaps I'll start doing it correctly. Geography can be fun. Thanks Don |
Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: Seaking Date: 01 Nov 06 - 07:56 AM Don - I played this in DADGAD and picked out bits of the melody as I went, sometimes picking it as a 6/8 between verses (probably influenced by the Archie Fisher version). Worked well but very dificult to explain strictly in terms of chords. Great song, I might resurrect it.. Chris |
Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: GUEST,kenny Date: 02 Nov 06 - 06:55 AM also, Don Meixner, in the interests of accuracy, - lyrics at end of 2nd verse, I seem to remember as "fitter AT NIGG BAY" , not on any quay. |
Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: GUEST,kenny Date: 02 Nov 06 - 06:57 AM ps - no criticism intended Don, just trying to help. The best mistake in this song is when Mary Black sings about being "a MADMAN or a roustabout...." Maybe some unintended truth in that.......... |
Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: Jeri Date: 02 Nov 06 - 07:10 AM This is what I got for words, transcribed from Archie Fisher's tape and posted in a thread from 1999:
MEN of WORTH |
Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: GUEST,DonMeixner Date: 02 Nov 06 - 07:53 AM Thanks for the corrections. The biggest problem I have now is learning it right. Also, Kenny, I learned it from Mary Black's recording, I've never heard another. The missed words I used may be because Mary had them wrong or I couldn't understand them. In any case the meaning of the song wasn't lost on my audience. I knew that Mudman and not Madman was the likely word. I have a brother who worked an oil rig one summer in the Gulf. He corrected me on that one. Thanks Don |
Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: Tom Hamilton frae Saltcoats Scotland Date: 02 Nov 06 - 08:33 AM yes the words are flotta to Kishorn |

Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: Teribus Date: 05 Nov 06 - 07:46 AM Leave the land behind, laddie, you've better days to find The companies have the money and they'll soon teach you the skills Green fields far away, laddie, the forties and the brae Be a mudman or a roustabout, you'll soon learn how to drill That fourth line should read: Green fields far away, laddie, the Forties and the Brae The Forties Field and The Brae both being early UK offshore oilfields Later there is reference to the Neptune and the SeaQuest, both early days semi-submersible drilling rigs used for exploraation, did a couple of trips to the SeaQuest and worked with people who had worked on the Neptune. Never really liked songs that had to rely on La-la-la lines |
Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: Jeri Date: 05 Nov 06 - 08:43 AM it wasn't written with la-las. Mary Black la-las, Archie Fisher instrumentalizes. If anybody la-las around me, I'll take it as an invitation for a nose-flute solo*. * humorous, empty threat... more or less |
Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: GUEST,DonMeixner Date: 05 Nov 06 - 09:24 AM Nose flute? Jeepers Jeri thats not very nice. Thank you all for the corrections. They are now firmly placed in my version of the song. I always felt that the La Las could not really be a part of the song. It wondered me how so inventive a writer as Archie Fisher was resorting to La Las. But Mary Black's recording was the onliest I had ever heard. When I decided to learn the song I chose to substitute a guitar line or a harmonica riff for the la las. Both are successful. I tend you use the guitar line most often however. Thanks again. Don |
Subject: RE: guitar chords 'MEN OF WORTH' From: Jeri Date: 05 Nov 06 - 09:38 AM Don, for a very long time, I thought the la-las were there because Mary Black forgot some lyrics. On the nose flute thing, I tend to think up evil deeds and almost never do them. |
