Subject: Lyr req. Midnight or Moonlight on the Water
From: Baz
Date: 11 Apr 98 - 05:19 PM

I'm looking for the words to this. I know it's a well known tune but I've heard someone sing it in a bluesy style.
If anyone has the words and or tune I'd be grateful.
Regards Baz

John Croziat wrote words to the traditional tune, Midnight On The Water, copyright 1976. Kate Wolf recorded it in 1979 on her Lines On The Paper album, currently available on Rhino. If you have realaudio, check this link which will take you directly to a 14 second sample from Kate's site. If it is the one you are looking for, I will get it for you. No problem getting to the top of Kate's site, just type katewolf into your location line, and you will go there.

Midnight On The Water
words: John Croziat, 1976, tune: traditional

There are times when I am blue
Thinking of you and me
At midnight on the water
And how it used to be
There are stars among the trees
In some old memories I know
At midnight on the water,
Not so long ago.
Though they're gone like floating dreams
The scenes were there as in a mirror
Made by the moon upon the water
And our love was never stronger
But the picture was broken
by the waves we left behind
At midnight on the water
Once upon a time.

There are times when I am blue
Thinking of you and me
At midnight on the water
And how it used to be
In the stillness of the lake
Where these thoughts take me again
At midnight on the water
Do you remember when?
Though they're gone like floating dreams
The scenes were there as in a mirror
Made by the moon upon the water
And our love was never stronger
But the picture was broken
By the waves we left behind
At midnight on the water
Once upon a time.

Hi all

I've heard some other words to this tune as well. From memory - and I'm no good at remembering lyrics - it starts off:

Well I never had time for that fancy dancing

The tune of the song is slightly different, maybe in rhythm only, from the instrumental tune but the song leads into playing the tune. I'll see if I can find the lyrics, but it will be at least next week before I see the woman who sings it, so if anyone else knows it please feel free to post the lyrics and I'd love to know who recorded it.

Helen

There is an excellent version of this by Norma Waterson. I believe it is on a Waterson Carthy Album. All I can recall is the chorus; play me a fiddle tune, sing me asong. Banish misfortune , my time is not long. Is this the song you mean ?

Hi again

Yes, Aldus, that's the one, but do you have the rest of the words? If not I'll see what I can find out next week. Now that you mention it, I think someone did say that the Watersons sang it.

I'm sorry Aldus - I just reread your posting and realised that you don't know the rest of the lyrics. So, cancel my request in my last posting, and I'll see what I can find out from the wwoman who sings the song at our sessions - about once a year :-(

A posting in another thread said Kate Wolf sang a version of this. Lyrics available anywhere? Also, anybody sure of the tune origins? I've seen it credited to Luke Thomasson and to trad. Liner notes on Mark O'Connor's "Midnight On..." say Texas fiddler Benny Thomasson credited it to his father, but doesn't seem to treat the question with certainty.

MarkF,

The one Kate Wolf sang goes like this:

VERSE 1: There are times when I am blue thinking of you and me
At midnight on the water And how it use to be
There were stars among the trees in some old memories I know
At midnight on the water not so long ago.

CHORUS: Though they're gone the scenes were there
Like floating dreams as in a mirror
Made by the moon upon the water
And our love was never stronger
But the picture was broken by the waves we left behind
At Midnight on the water once upon a time.

VERSE 2: There are times when I am blue thinking of you and me
At midnight on the water and how it use to be
In the stillness of the lake Where these thoughts take me again
At midnight on the water do you remember when.

REPEAT CHORUS

These are the lyrics she sang as near as I can remember them. I can't tell you what recording it's on as I lost the custody battle. It's sung pretty closely, if not exactly, to the aforementioned fiddle tune. It's a beautiful haunting song that is great to sing.

Does anyone know if Ron Kavana ever recorded his version?

Frankie

Kate' version is on 'Lines on the Paper'. The chorus given in the insert is:

Though they're gone like floating dreams
The scenes were there as in a mirror
Made by the moon upon the water
And our love was never stronger

Apart from 'are' instead of 'were' in the first verse (there are stars), the rest of the lyrics are given as Frankie recalls them above.

The lyrics as given by Frankie were written by John Croizat and I have just written everything I know about him. lyrics to many of Kate's songs are located here The best place to look for things Kate is simply katewolf.com (I have it turned to the page for Lines On The Paper, the album it is located on) OH, and I just noticed that John Croizat played the fiddle on that recording ~~ that's interesting.

The Ron Kavana I know spells it Kavana not Kavanagh. I did a posting last week saying that he was playing at the swan in stockwell and thought I had spelt his name wrong but I hadn't. Are there 2 Ron Kavana's?

No, there's only one, and he's unmissable, particularly in his new band with Brian McNeill and Gino Lupari (ah yes, and Tomas Lynch is on stage somewhere, too...).
Anyway, here are his lyrics (roughly) for MIDNIGHT ON THE WATER as sung by Norma Waterson on the first Waterson:Carthy album:

Chorus:
Play me a fiddle tune, sing me a song
Banish misfortune, my time is not long
Midnight on the water so steady and slow
Stay up till the morning, one more for the road
Midnight on the water, so steady and slow.
Let's have another drink and set em up Joe

I never thought much of that fancy dancing
With my two left feet and my rovin eye
But when the band plays so slowly in 3/4 time
I could dance with my darling until morning comes

Well, I've done all my dancing down in those barrooms
Dancing and drinking go hand in glove
So give a beer to the fiddler, play all the old tunes
So I can dance closer to the one that I love

Midnight on the water so steady and slow
Lets have another drink and set em up Joe

below is the version of this song I have. But it seems fragmentary. Only 2 verses ? Ta

MIDNIGHT ON THE WATER (Ron Kavana)

I never thought much of that fancy dancing
With my two left feet and my roving eye.
But when the band plays that slow air in three-four time,
I could dance with my darling until morning comes.

Chorus:

Play me a fiddle tune, sing me a song!
Banish misfortune, my time is not long!
Midnight on the water, so steady and slow.
The lark in the morning, one more for the road.
Midnight on the water, so steady and slow.
Let's have another drink and set them up Joe.

Well, I've done all my dancing down in those bar-rooms.
Cos dancing and drinking they go hand in glove.
So give a beer to the fiddler, and play all the old tunes
So I can dance closer to the one that I love!
