Dave Wallis taught me English at Earls Colne in the early 1970's. He was a great guy and at one point told me that the reason why his book was not turned into a movie related specifically to the death of BRIAN JONES. Dave was quite an inspiring teacher and was a different type to the other old and rigid teachers at ECGS. He was, as you might say, "cool" - and that was a huge motivator for other students. I don't think anyone had anything but a great respect for him.

James

I met Dave Wallis in about 1979/80.
He was running a writer's group at a Colchester Evening institute.

At that time, I believe he lived at Wivenhoe, a village outside Colchester.

He was a very pleasant man, very encouraging to new writers.

I remember he told us that he had worked his way round the world by working as a deck-hand on tramp steamers.

Dave Wallis taught English and French at Earls Colne Grammar School in Essex from 1971 until it closed in 1975. He was living in or near Pebmarsh (Essex) at the time.

I found this site through Google, having had, for no reason obvious to me, a random thought last night about 'Only Lovers....', a book I haven't thought about for 40 years or more.

I am a jazz musician, and in the 1960s I was living and playing music in London. My piano player was Tom Culbert, a teacher working in North London, who got our band a gig playing at the launch of a novel by a teaching colleague, Dave Wallis. This turned out to be 'Only Lovers.....', and we all got a copy (mine has long since vanished, although I remember reading and enjoying it). I remember it was planned to make a film starring the Stones, but I don't think that ever happened.

I've not heard of or seen Dave Wallis since that party, but Tom Culbert is still an active pianist now living in Cumbria. I've not seen him for a few years, but his phone is 01254 247328. He may have some information.

Good luck,

John Wurr

I contacted both his UK publishers some time ago. Neither had any useful info (not even an agent contact!). I'm pretty sure he's no longer around. 1917 birth date makes that a probability, sadly. I have hardback copies of other books by him and they have some interesting biographical details if you still need them.

I have an oldish London residential phone book, which lists several D Wallises, abour four of whom are (or were) in north London. If you want to send me a personal message with a little bit more about your project, I'd be happy to follow them up, in the hope of getting at least a forwarding address. I'm also registered with some UK-based people-search services which might be worth trying.

I did actually read the book, by the way (the one where the oldies topped themselves). I'm pretty sure it was turned into a film, but didn't see it. But I fear it will be many years since Dave got his last royalty cheque, M Ted.

I searched Biography and Genealogy Master Index & only found a couple of references that are in Science Fiction reference materials.

The science fiction encyclopedia. Doubleday, 1979. Has an entry with no birthdate, says probably American & gives a 1 line description of the book you mention.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature. A checklist, 1700-1974. Volume 1. Lists only the one book you mention and gives 1917 for a birthdate. That's it.

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction. Edited by John Clute and Peter Nicholls. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1993. (has an entry by we don't have it so I can't check it.) The editor is the same as the 1st book I mentioned, check your local library. The English publisher of his book in 1964 was A. Blond, 1979 reprint I. Henry; the American publisher was Dutton.

Good luck, there doesn't seem to be a lot out there.

Check with the publisher--they pay royalties, so they always know where to find an author--

If this chap was living in London and was a teacher, a possible help might be to try the London Education Authority, teachers records dept. Its just a thought.

There's a review of the book here. Nothing else, though, and nothing biographical that I can find.

Cheers!

I'm looking for guidance on locating an author called Dave Wallis for a project I'm working on. He wrote a couple of books in the early sixties, one of which was titled Only Lovers Left Alive which received some critical acclaim. I've searched several sites and can find some mentions of him and his influences on others but I would really like some biog. stuff and ideally would like to contact the guy himself. He is English and was at one time living in North London and apparently was a teacher who contributed some thoughts on education! Any of you catters got ideas on how I might trace him or any particularly useful sites for this type of exercise. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Frank
