I assume there must be someone mulling over a modern version about a h4kr d00d being robbed of his warez-o?

Harpgirl - please save us from random lyric posts! Who's your source of that set? Where do they say they got it from? Etc.!

And in verse 2, wouldn't the weather be "fair" rather than "fare"?

Martin Carthy has recorded it as well, I think - many years ago.

I like this one:

THE MAID ON THE SHORE

Their was a fair maiden who lived all alone
She lives all alone in the shore, oh
And no one could she find that would calm her sweet mind
But to wander alone on the shore shore shore
To wander alone on the shore, oh

Now there was a brave captain Who sailed a fine ship
And the weather being steady and fare, oh
I shall die I shall die this brave captain did cry
If I can't have this maid on the shore shore shore
If I can't have this maid on the shore, oh

After many persuasions they brought her on board
And the captain set down her a care oh
He invited her down to his cabin below
There was subtle farewell out of care, oh
There was subtle farewell out of care, oh

I'll sing you a song this fair maiden did cry
And the captain was weeping for joy, oh
She sang it so sweetly, so soft, so completely
She sang captain and sailors to sleep, oh
She sang captain and sailors to sleep, oh

Well she robbed them of jewels and she robbed them of wealth
She robbed them of fine costly fare,oh
And the captain's broad sword she used as an oar
And she rode herself back to the shore shore shore
She rode herself back to the shore, oh

Now the men they were mad, yet the men they were sad
They were deeply sunk down in despair, oh
To see her go way with her booty so gay
With her rings and her things and her fine fare, oh
her rings and her things and her fare, oh

Oh do not be sad or sunk down in despair
You should have known me before, oh
I sang you to sleep and I robbed you of wealth
And again I'm a maid on the shore shore shore
And again I'm a maid on the shore, oh

If you think about it "Maid on the Shore" is virtually the same story as "The Broomfield Wager" with a nautical setting. After all they're both about p***k-teasers.

Mzzy - can't find the song in his songbook or my re-issues of his recordings (#2 and #5) from Smithsonian. I'll check my parents' vinyl recordings on Saturday.

These look close, but Charley, if you have the RdB version, yes, I'd like it. Thanks!

Subject: Lyr Add: MAID ON THE SHORE (sung by Stan Rogers)
From: Charley Noble
Date: 24 Apr 02 - 04:05 PM

Mrzzy- the way Roll & Go does it is close to that of Stan Rogers. Runs like this:

The Maid on the Shore-II
(Traditional as arranged and sung by Stan Rogers in 1976 Adapted from the Peacock Collection of Newfoundland Folk Songs)

There is a young maiden she lives all alone,
She lives all alone on the shore-o;
There's nothing she can find to comfort her mind
But to roam all alone on the shore, shore, shore –
But to roam all alone on the shore.

'Twas of the young Captain who sailed the salt sea,
Let the winds blow high, blow low,
"I will die, I will die," the young Captain did cry,
"If I can't have that maid on the shore, shore, shore,
If I can't have that maid on the shore."

"I have lots of silver; I have lots of gold;
I have lots of costly ware-o;
I'll divide, I'll divide with my jolly ship's crew
If they row me that maid on the shore, shore, shore,"
If they row me that maid on the shore.

After much persuasion they got her aboard,
Let the wind blow high, blow low;
They replaced her away in his cabin below;
"Here's adieu to all sorrow and care, care, care –
Here's adieu to all sorrow and care."

They replaced her away in his cabin below,
Let the wind blow high, blow low;
She's so pretty and neat; so sweet and complete
She's sung Captain and sailors to sleep, sleep, sleep,
She's sung Captain and sailors to sleep.

Then she robbed him of silver, she robbed him of gold,
She robbed him of costly ware-o;
Then she took his broadsword instead of an oar,
And paddled her way to the shore, shore, shore –
And paddled her way to the shore.

"Me men must be crazy, me men must be mad,
Me men must be deep in dispair-o;
For to let you away from my cabin so gay
And to paddle your way to the shore, shore, shore –
And to paddle your way to the shore."

"Your men was not crazy, your men was not mad,
Your men was not deep in despair-o;
I deluded your sailors as well as yourself,
I'm a maiden again on the shore, shore, shore –
I'm a very rich maid on the shore!"

Brett and Eli do a great job with this one and it will be featured on our forthcoming CD.

If you prefer the Dyer-Bennett version I'll look it up; my family has quite a collection. Cheerily,
Charley Noble

The version I've clickied may not be quite what you remember - I think the version Pyrates Royale do may be closer.

I don't remember much of this one, I think I had it one one of those transluscent red vinyl albums by Richard Dyer Bennett, maybe? I think there is a sailor and a woman and she has the fine costly ware-O but it might be what she stole from him... Help?
