Anyone know where to find the lyrics to Fiddle and Bow off of Natalie Macmaster's record No Boundaries? I've looked on her website and googled it for a while without luck.

Try searching Bruce Guthro.I'm sure he wrote the song.

Yes, Bruce wrote it. I think this is an MP3 of the song--Click here. Pay no attention to the lyrics posted (Child of the Sea), just listen. At the bottom of the page it says that the clip that is playing is Fiddle and Bow. Perhaps someone who hears better than I do can get the lyrics......that is all I found.

Guest, I could get you the words off the recording and post them for you in a few days if nobody has found them on the internet.

FIDDLE AND BOW
(Bruce Guthro)

Oh, my name is William MacDanel (?). I have come across the sea.
I am no handsome man of wealth, nor do I plan to be.
But I've a treasure fit for kings and beggars all the same
She comes with me where'er I go. Sometimes she calls my name.

My father worked his life away diggin' for the coal.
To the central lowlands every day with shovel he would go,
And he left for me the only thing he felt he had 'twas fine.
It's my pride and joy. It's yours now, boy, with a note he left behind:

CHORUS: No apple falls far from a tree.
Now I pass this fiddle down to thee.
Hold it near your heart and soul.
Let your passions guide your goal.
And when the music sweet doth play,
Oh, know I'll be not far away.
Though my body lies down with the cold,
My spirit lies for you to hold.
Fiddle and bow.

So with fiddle strapped upon my back, I set out to see new land.
I have lived a while in rovin' life, played to meek and grand.
And to all, I play with all I have. I could not help believe (?),
When I'd draw the bow across the strings, this is how I'd set 'em free.

(INSTRUMENTAL BREAK; CHORUS)

A beautiful song. As a fiddle player I am particularly touched by the lyrics. After considerable struggle, I have transcribed the score (with instrumental breaks) for my own use. If anyone would like a copy (PDF or NWC file), PM me with your email address and I'll email it to you.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

I think the line in the chorus may be, "Let your passions guide your bow." Or maybe I just heard what I wanted to hear - I think it's a better line that way.

Marion

PS I also think that his "body lies down with the coal." But no guarantees, I haven't heard this song for a while.

I believe that the first line should be: "My name is William, I've travelled far; I have come across the sea...", but it's a bit too muffled on the Guthro recording, so don't take my word for it!
