On the Silver Burdett Songbook thread (69027), I have posted the Index for "Canciones Populares," a songbook for Spanish-speaking school children in American territories (Puerto Rico, and others at the time it was written).

A goodly number of Spanish language songs, including "Aguinaldo," the song children sing when they go from house to house at Christmas time, getting small gifts (supposedly they are traveling to find the Christ child). "Aguinaldo" means Christmas or New Year's present.

Thanks 'catters' I'm new to all this and just overwhelmed by how much friendly and helpful advice there is 'out-there' Courtesy of suggestions above and cross- referencing links I got through to an astounding site Zemerl = an interactive database of Jewish song in Yiddish, Hebrew and Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) I even found verses I didn't know. of songs I thought I did! I don't know the techs for making the whole address available but I think it's Princeton University?

Rincon Roy, The song about the man who sacrifices himself on the railroad is called "Jesus Garcia". It's a great song - I have it on an obscure CD recording I made and could even send it to you if you are interested. If you don't find the lyrics on any of the sites listed let me know, either by pm or by posting here, and I'll transcribe them and send them to you. There's a street in Mexico City named after him, you know! I don't have a cookie here at work but I'm a member and you should be able to pm me.

Warning! The site posted by Annraoi works fine with Internet Explorer, But on Netscape, at least with my server, causes the "Illegal Operation" notice and close-down of any open websites.

Well, the first song you mention is Pete Seeger's "Guantanamera," his setting of words by the Cuban poet Jose Marti, which you'll find here in DigiTrad. Only one verse in the DT itself, but more were added in this thread:

Gad, adding to my own thread...

Am looking for two songs haven't yet found at the site mentioned: first contains lyric: yo soy un hombre sincero, de donde crece la palma.(source might be Puerto Rico?). second is a corrido about a railroad worker who sacrifices his life to save a town from a train pulling a load of burning dinamite. (source might be Mexican tradition)
