From: GUEST,Ard Mhacha Date: 29 Apr 02 - 06:58 AM Yesterday while waiting on a Gaelic Foootball game to come on TV,I spent an hour watching the rmainder of G-Men [1935] Starring James Cagney, unbelieveable, how the hell did we watch this rubbish. All sentiment aside, this was an education on the myth of the good old days in Hollywood, so corny it was laughable, and as for Cagney and the rest of the cast, if they are in Hell[Heaven forbid] they will be destined to watch this Film forever, punishment enough without the flames. Subject: RE: BS: Favourite Gangster Movie! From: GUEST,Desdemona at work Date: 29 Apr 02 - 02:12 PM We have a whole system whereby "Anyone Can Learn To Speak Gumshoe/Gangland/Rat Pack, etc." Simply preface every statement with "say", and end it with "see?" Refer to women in the 3rd person as "dolls", "broads", "dames" and "skirts"; "dollface" is always good when addressing them directly. "Bub", and "Mack" are good for addressing men, and a liberal sprinkling of terms like "gin mill", "classy joint" and the like is also helpful. Try it & see! |

And Ron Olver I admire your wit including All the Presidents men, was old tricky Dicky the gangster, another great movie. Ard Mhacha. |

Subject: RE: BS: Favourite Gangster Movie! From: Don Firth Date: 29 Apr 02 - 04:20 PM Two of the noir-est of the film noir:-- The Maltese Falcon (1941), although that was more of a "caper" movie than a gangster movie. And The Black Hand (1949), starring Gene Kelly in a none-dancing/singing role. One of the greatest schticks in any movie was in The Black Hand, when, in the dead of night, George Allani (played by character actor Carl Milletaire) sets the timer on a bomb, plants it in front of a store that refused to pay protection, and casually walks down the street, his heels clicking on the pavement as he counts in Italian. Subject: RE: BS: Favourite Gangster Movie! From: Kim C Date: 29 Apr 02 - 04:52 PM The Godfather was a little before my time. I wasn't old enough to see it when it came out... but I did finally see it last Christmas on the Godfather Marathon on TBS or whatever it was. I really liked The Untouchables with Kevin Costner. The best part is when he throws Frank Nitti (that creepy Billy Drago) off the roof and he lands on the hood of a car. Andy Garcia says to him, Where's Nitti? And he answers... In the car. And the baby carriage scene in the train station is absolutely priceless for its suspense factor. 'Course in real life, Frank Nitti didn't get thrown off a roof. There was a lot that didn't follow the real story of Eliot Ness, which I think was pretty darn fascinating all by itself. But that's Hollywood for ya........... Would like very much to see Goodfellas and Analyze This. |

Subject: RE: BS: Favourite Gangster Movie! From: Kim C Date: 30 Apr 02 - 10:02 AM Don, I knew that! I used to love Northern Exposure! (there's another TV series I miss) Kendall, it's sort of a funny thing... after I saw that movie, I wanted to find out more about what REALLY happened. So I went to the library and found... TWO books. Two books. One was Eliot Ness's own book, which was very short, and the other was a general thing about which gangster was who and all that. It's been so long ago now I don't even remember, except for the story of the Irish gangster who was a well-known florist. One day the rivals came in and shot him right there in the flower shop. Nice guys. |
Subject: RE: BS: Favourite Gangster Movie! From: Steve Latimer Date: 30 Apr 02 - 10:16 AM It wasn't a movie, but the SCTV spoof on the 40's Mob movie was hilarious. Katherine O'Hara's cry of "I love ya Johnny ya big lug, I love ya" was bang on. The whole thing ended up with Johnny getting off so that he could lead a march to buy War bonds. I haven't been able to watch a Cagney or Bogey movie since. More votes for Snatch, The Lavender Hill Mob, Goodfellas, The Untouchables and Godfathers 1 & II. |

Subject: RE: BS: Favourite Gangster Movie! From: Lonesome EJ Date: 30 Apr 02 - 12:36 PM White Heat with James Cagney contains two of the greatest scenes in all of film, not just the gangster movies. Cagney as Cody Jarrett is eating lunch in the prison cafeteria when word arrive that his mother is dead. The word is passed from a trustee to each prisoner down the table until the last unfortunate soul has to tell the psychotic Jarrett. Cagney goes berserk, kicking food off the tables, screaming, punching guards and inmates. The second scene is the great one where Cagney takes refuge from the police at the top of a fuel storage tower. He is shot multiple times and staggers around the platform, bloody and laughing hysterically. At last, he fires his pistol into the leaking fuel, shouting "Look Ma! I'm on Top of the World!" And then the whole tower explodes in a fireball.

Subject: RE: BS: Favourite Gangster Movie! From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 01 May 02 - 04:04 PM I can't believe no one has mentioned Public Enemy Number 1 with James Cagney. That and Little Caesar defined the ganster movie. They used to show the as a double feature a couple of times a year at a secondrun- third-rate movie theater in my home town when I was a kid. I think I could have done a pretty good Rocky Horror Show performance at the front of the theater, I watched the movies so many times. The ending of Public Enemy has to be one of the classic endings of all time. Cagney has been gunned down by the mob, and they leave him propped against the front door of his house. They ring the doorbell and leave, and when Cagney's Mother opens the door he pitches forward on the floor, flat on his face. You don't know it's going to happen until it happens.
That scene qualifies as one of the two most jolting scenes I've ever seen in a movie. The other is Richard Widmark shoving a lady in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs, killing her in the fall.
Brrrrr... Jerry |
