Ok, so this is about the 3rd of this type of message i've put on the cat but then i move about alot.

Having just read the st albans club message i thought i'd start asking if there are any other folk clubs in herts. I will be moving to either welwyn garden city or hitchin (or somewhere like that) in aug and was wondering if anyone had any recomendations. or knew of any clubs around. any type really but i mainly sing.

Ta

Charlie, have you seen Breezy's post on the St Albans thread.
There is an informal singaround every Monday at The White Horse, Castle St. Hertford, and a monthly session at the Bell, Benington, next one 21st May.
Might see you?
keith.

Lots are listed on Martin Nail's site

What I can tell you:

  • Hitchin - Sunday evenings, big amplified concert-style venue with major names
  • Hollybush, Redbourn - apparently flourishing under new management but I haven't been there yet - intend to go soon (May 16)
  • Mad Nanny, Baldock - only been to a couple of singers night there which I am told were less well attended than usual. I hope they can produce a decent audience 'cos I'm booked there for Oct 17!
  • Stortfolk, Bishops Stortford - small, friendly, tolerant of all types of music, recommended if you like that sort of club
  • Tudor, Chesham. Well run, seems very guitar-centric. Mudcatter Hamish will be along shortly to promote it I'm sure :-)

There's a session / singaround at the Bull pub in Barton-le-Clay (near Hitchin via back roads) every other Monday night. Next one is May 6th & follows fortnightly from there. Mostly guitar and singing at the moment, but welcoming all instruments.

Also one at the Bird in Hand pub in Gosmore (that's really near Hitchin) every month, next one Wednesday 22nd May.

I'd recommend finding the 'Unicorn' magazine in the local libraries up here - it's full of listings!

Also in Stortford every fortnight in the bar at the Half Moon there's a first rate session (songs asa well as tunes), and every now and then it turns into a club in the function room with a good range of guests.

Here's link to the sessions and clubs page I keep on my website for things happening in this part of the world.

Kevin - your page needs a bit of updating!

The Mad Nanny has moved from Letchworth to Baldock.
Hale End FC is no more, replaced by The Old Rose and Crown in Walthamstow.

By the way, more Herts/East Anglia listings Here

If you want to know what's on in Herts., then Unicorn is worth getting.

Careful about the session information, though. It's very patchy in Unicorn (for example, the Bushel & Strike, Ashwell is down as weekly when it's the 1st Monday of the month and the White Horse, Hertford isn't in (3rd Sunday afternoons) even though it's been going for 20 years).

:-)
Ian

Updated (or rather it will be as soon as the server gets round to it, which could be a few hours with this particular one.)

With pleasure... and sorry for the delay!

Tudor Folk Club is alternate guest/singaround; every Monday except bank holidays. Details on the Tudor Folk Club web site. Yes, we are a bit guitar-centric. But that's not policy - we'd love to have more diversity of instruments. Gosh, we even had an Appalacian dulcimer last night. And two accordions (accordia?).

Also 2nd and 4th Fridays in the Blue Ball, Asheridge, near Chesham. Very informal singaround. Details

Okay, so technically they're in Bucks, but, hey, very close.

Hitchin's a great club - if you want to listen to top names. Participation-wise, I can vouch for Stortfolk in Bishop's Stortford and The Holly Bush in Redbourn's a good composite club.

Anything with John Breeze's association's going to be good quality and fun.

Oh, and don't forget The Blue Anchor in St Alban's - first Tuesday of each month. Alan and Jenny run a really good singaround there. I don't have Alan's contact details with me, but there's this: Blue Anchor, 145 Fishpool Street, St Albans, 01727 855038

Enjoy!
