Saturday 11th May 2002: the Amberswood Free Festival will take place at and adjacent to the Strangeways Hotel (yes, there is a real one!), Liverpool Road, Hindley, Wigan, Lancashire, UK, from 1.30pm till late. Supported by funding from various sponsors, this free festival features an afternoon concert with Jez Lowe, supported by Redmayne, Nick Hennessey, Monologue Joe, Steve Chatterley, Joan Blackburn, Airs & Pages, and Verse & Worse performers. Also featured will be the winning song from the Songwriting Competition earlier this year (winner Bob Evans).

There will be craft stalls, children's poetry competition, face painting, and the Sealed Knot Re-Enactment Society Living History Exhibition. Singaround sessions will be ongoing during the afternoon and evening. Bring along your publicity and advertising as an area will be provided for them.

And as the Marquee will be set up on the Friday (10th May), there will be a singaround session in it on the Friday evening 8pm till late - bring your sleeping bags!

Further info from Sheila on 01942 741220, email: Sheila and see the Verse & Worse website: Verse & Worse

The Festival is in celebration of the regenerated woodland at Amberswood, and the winning song from the Songwriting Competition tells the plight of trees. Taking place over Jubilee weekend, it is also a contribution to the Queen's Jubilee celebrations. Funding has been made available on both these counts: from Wigan Council, Wigan & Chorley Groundwork Trust, and Awards For All (Lottery). Hence it has been possible to make this a free festival. Do take advantage of this, and who knows, there may be another next year...

Joan, I'm a bit confused (yes I know this a fairly normal state for me!). I thought the Jubilee weekend was at the end of May. Can you confirm the date of the festival please?

We'd love to see you if it is the 10th/11th May. We have a problem if it's the other one! Are you confused yet?

Sorry, Sue, I'm getting confused - the dates are definitely 10th/11th May - next weekend.

Diz, come off the M6 at Junction 24 and take the A58 towards Hindley. It will take you through Ashton-in-Makerfield, Bryn Gates, and Platt Bridge. The Strangeways is on Liverpool Road, that part of the A58 between Platt Bridge and Hindley, and it's on the left-hand side of the road. Go to Multimap and input "244 Liverpool Road, Wigan" in the quick search box. That will give you a 1:10000 scale map with the pub ringed. Click on the "printer friendly" button for a version to print off. I'll look forward to seeing you and your friends.

I'll pass that on, too, Ralphie.

I've just received the running order for the afternoon concert:

1.30pm - 2.15 pm Redmayne
2.20pm - 2.40pm Joan Blackburn
2.45pm - 3.05pm Monologue Joe
3.10pm - 3.30pm Steve Chatterley
3.35pm - 3.55pm Airs & Pages
4.10pm - 5.00pm Jez Lowe

The mayor is due around 2.30pm and will be given five minutes, and Bob Evans will perform his winning song then (so I may be doing a very very short spot). Nick Hennessey (storyteller and musician) will be doing a couple of twenty-minute stints in the craft tent.

See you there.
Joan

It's just Jez we've got in the afternoon. He is appearing with the Bad Pennies on Saturday evening at the Railway Folk Club, Heatley, Lymm - but as far as I know, that's not a freebie.

"Lancashire Diamonds" is a compilation - poetry, not prose, written by Verse & Worse people, with two reminiscence pieces from local residents who live near the Strangeways. Copies will be on sale at Amberswood, price £2.50. As will copies of other booklets by Verse & Worsers, and I'm told there will be a few copies of the famous "Barbie is a Slapper" booklet - get there early before they all go!

Well, here's the day after, and I can say that I really enjoyed yesterday. I only saw the first part of the main concert, and thereafter was stuck in the craft tent, so while I didn't actually see Jez, what I heard was fantastic. I understand other 'Catters were there, but didn't make it to the craft tent so we missed one another completely. Ah well...

The evening song session in the pub went very well, with some of the songsters from the afternoon, plus some more who hadn't been able to come in the afternoon, plus five-sixths of Bandersnatch (one band member was sick), who are an excellent band, and are definitely going to be big within the next couple of years.

As a community event, the festival went off very well, attracting a fair number of local residents who enjoyed and were impressed with what was there, and hopefully there will be a repeat next year.

Joan,

Thanks for advertising the event for everyone.

I looked out for you in the concert tent and bar, but didn't think to look in the craft tent!

Hope to see you at Selby perhaps.

Thanks Joan for posting. The rest of the festival went very well which is good news for a first event. Cheers
