I am looking for vintage 78's from the 30's, 40's and 50's. Ideally (probably in my dreams) patten, Johnson, House, early Muddy.

I have had no success reaching collectors, dealers or anyone else able to help. So much for the efficiency of the web! Can any fellow mudcatters help?

Thanks and as John Primer says....keep on lovin' the blues

Are you after the '78s or will CD reissues be okay? If the latter, go here: http://www.shanachie.com/shcatalog.htm

I occasionally see such records at our local used record store, but if you find them under similar circumstances, be prepared to pay a lot for them. Unfortunately, flea markets and antique/junque stores are not much better--dealers always seem to err on the side of higher prices (especially when it comes to the condition of the record or instrument or whatever "A million scratches and one side broke off? Looks like mint to me"). You can't really blame them, but it does make it more difficult for those who are truly interested in the item than for those who think it will make a good decoration at chain restaurants. I once saw, at a Chili's restaurant in Montgomery, AL, an accordion that I really would like to have owned literally bolted to the wall. Just look forward to that happy day when you'll find a box of these records at a yard sale for cheap. If you do have a ton of money to put into this, go to New York or Chicago and check the used record stores there.

Good luck, Chet W.

I think the days of finding reasonably priced blues 78's anywhere are over. The good news is that if you're interested in the music rather than the aritfact there is more variety, quality, and availability in reissues than ever before.

Jon-thanks your note. It is actual 78's that I am looking for. Ihave had 3 responses to my note and none are encouraging. The frustration is that the records are out there. I am a drummer and just want to line the walls in my band room with framed shellac records! I'll keep you posted if I get anywhere. Thanks for replying.

One other suggestion - Those guys that are doing the re-issues must be getting the records from somewhere. Yazoo label seems to be the most prolific. You could write them and see where they get theirs. They are a division of Shanachie so look on the link above for an email address or try this one: PO Box 208, Newton, NJ 07860.

Here is the Recordfinder's Message Board which has a few people dealing in 78's. I haven't looked closely enough to see if there is any blues.

If all you want them for is decorations, please avoid the blues records and buy a lot of cheap Bing Crosby, etc. 78's, make counterfeit labels (not hard with a computer) paste them on and frame them. The original blues 78's are too valuable, not just money-wise, to be used in this way. Please consider it.

Chet W.
