Subject: When is the 'new' Mudcat coming?
From: GUEST,Jon
Date: 01 May 02 - 04:50 PM

Call me impatient, if you wish, but we've been promised the 'new improved' mudcat for almost a year.

I have no problem if it never happens. The current version is pretty damn good.

What I find frustrating, is the fact that we're constantly told that it is 'imminent'

Anyone know the lowdown?

And NO this isn't a flame, and NO I don't think I could do any better.

Unfulfilled promises aren't great, though.

Jon

Actually, much of it is already here - many tools that help us manage Mudcat, consolidate duplicate threads, identify and deal with those who misuse or abuse our forum. We've been using those tools to your advantage for many months.
There are a couple of features that should come online soon, but I don't know when. The most noticeable one is automatic line breaks, but it's also the most problematic. It's hard to come up with a balance that eliminates the need for typing line breaks, but still gives users some flexibility in using HTML. Another feature will be threads that truncate at a certain length, leaving a button at the end to go on to the next block of messages - that will eliminate the need to start a "part 2" of a thread if it gets too long. The third thing is the ability to delete or archive personal messages in bulk, instead of one at a time (but you have to be a registered Mudcatter to have personal messages).

Max is the great and powerful OZ! Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! Max the Benevolent will bestow the new kinder, gentler Mudcat upon you SOON!!!

Guest Jon, as you can see by the (typical) pathetic lack of a response from those in the know here, you may have guessed by now that you have broached a subject at Maxie's Mudcat so taboo, it could only be raised by villains and Philistines.

This just isn't the sort of thing that gets discussed in polite Mudcat company. It makes Max look bad, and Max goes ballistic when someone does that to him. He goes ballistic behind his wizard's curtain, and then ignores the audacious question put to him in the forum, or sent to him directly. In fact, I believe he has been ignoring just these sorts of queries (though to be fair, sometimes he does send out his lackeys to give a tepid, slippery response) for years now.

Though he did make a grand gesture not so long ago to come in and say "ok Mudcatters, the new system is imminent and I'd like your feedback". And then a great silence on the issue fell upon the forum.

My only advice: don't hold your breath.

Hey asshole, is it so hard to understand that this young man has these other things he needs to worry about..............you know, like his daughter, making enough money to eat, keeping the electricity on that powers the servers that give you the Mudcat in a helluva lot better format than any I have seen........and that you don't pay the first dime for? For what it is worth, the new system is in developement, it looks pretty good, and it is being done by volunteers (this includes Max) in what time they have left over after they try and live a life that actually includes food and sleep. I tire of assholes who bitch about something that they get for nothing at someone elses expense.

I am very happy that you are a loser, because with your personality, if you were a successful business person, I would be on you in a second. Folks that complain about something they get for free that someone else has to sacrifice to provide are the lowest scum on the planet. That is why I refer to you as slugs. And you are. You remind me of someone whose "enablor" has died or disappeared and you are pissed off that no one does the things that let you consider your parasitic existence. So you glom onto, in this case, Max who doesn't deserve your attention. Remember something, asshole. He doesn't have to do any of this.

If you dislike it so, leave. I, for one, am grateful for the Mudcat if it never changes again. And I will be forever in Max's debt for providing it in the first place.

Now go grab yourself a Coke, sit in the corner, smile, and shut the fuck up.

Mick

Uncalled for response, Little Mick. Getting littler every time you post that way, INMHO.

Mick's likely just having a bad day. We all do, now and again. It's a part of the human condition, just like the gradual betterment of the Mudcat.

One suggestion, though. It might help reduce impatient expectations to just delete the promissory hyperboly on the opening page, and replace it with simple statement to the effect that: "We're continuing to evolve in our effort to provide the best service we can. Your donations toward that end would be greatly appreciated."

Those who have been around a while know how far the 'Cat has come. Heck, I even remember what a great day it was when "supersearch" came on line.

Bill, I am sorry that you don't like it, but it doesn't matter to me. This horses patoot hides behind a anonymous guise and takes shots at a man who has sacrificed a great deal to provide this site. Perhaps when you have been around as long as I have, you might begin to lose patience with it as well. Perhaps if you had my knowledge of what Max, Jeff, and Joe sacrifice in terms of their personal life, you would vent this way as well. I am not having a bad day, I am sick to death of whining assholes who continue to use this site as an outlet to express their crap.

As far as your evaluation of me, I really don't care what you think. Don't know you, and I haven't read enough of your posts for me to get a handle on you. But my response, INMHO, is exactly called for. I do get a bit high on the horse from time to time, and when I realize it I usually apologize. In reflection on this one, I believe you are just dead wrong. These folks ARE assholes, and need to be told so. For a long time I just sat back and watched this crap. Of late I have decided that from time to time these slugs are going to get back some of what they dish out. I will continue to do so when I feel it is required. When one complains about what they get for free from someone who sacrifices much to provide it, and does it in a snide, smartass way, that is what they get. Deal with it, or don't, I really don't care.

Mick

Bravely laid down, Mick, and commendable in the best Big Stick tradition. Sometimes it is not enough to carry a big stick. Sometimes you gotta use it a little! :>)

There is nothing taboo about talking about anything on the Cat, by the way; there is a taboo which is mostly voluntary about being anti-social, resorting to excessive use of venom, being underhandedly destructive, or intentionally seeking to upset or destroy the community's spirit of ongoing dialogue. Occasionally this taboo even gets acted on in words (as in Mick's posts above) or in extremis in action, such as by deleting excessive ad hominem vitriol in threads.

If you do not understand that taboo, it is worth some study, I suggest. Ya need to focus, though, on the intention behind the posts which invoke this taboo. THat's the big secret.

My intent, Amos...

First, no vitriol in the post I made above. I made it quite lightheartedly with tongue in cheek. I don't share Little Mick's obvious love for Max.

Now, if there are no taboo subjects in Mudcat, I would guess that would include addressing this issue. What Max is or isn't doing for the upgrade he has been advertising on page 1 for almost as long as the DT upgrade has been promised (not to mention ignoring queries about them both as SOP), I think we should be able to address the lag time between promised delivery date and actual delivery date with a bit of sarcasm and humor. Considering how old those promises are, that is.

However, if only Max worshippers are allowed to comment in these threads, I'll be sure to make note of it for next time.

But by all means, spill all your vitriol at me Little Mick. I'd rather have you doing it here than road raging at innocent people, or beating the wife, kids, and dog.

Everybody be sweet, now. Any of you who have ever worked for or with volunteer organizations know that sometimes great ideas take a while to be implemented, especially when time and money are in short supply. And yes, it's amazing to me that this site is free. There are many that aren't!

Would I like to see the changes? Well, sure I would. But they'll come along when they come along. :-)

funny, isn't it.....the folks being taken to task, Max, Pene, Joe, Mick...etc...can be contacted. With a tiny bit of effort you 'could' call them on the phone or drive to their front door....while the most obnoxious complainers are hiding behind a MUCH denser curtain than the one Max is accused of using!

(attend the FSGW Getaway in Oct. and meet them ALL face-to-face and do your bitching with no protective anonymity!...But then you'd have to treat them as real people with real lives ....and maybe even sing songs with them!)

...I'm with Mick..you have NO idea how much time and fretting & effort have gone into getting this thing this far! Maybe you'd rather have Bill Gates run Mudcat, hmmm? New version every year, updates only $400, and bigger hassles every time you 'upgrade'?

me, I'll wait happily, reading the good stuff and finding songs...

As far as I'm concerned, Mudcat is fine the way it is. Any improvements that Max cares to make as time goes by are just frosting on the cake.

And no, I don't worship Max, I'm just grateful to him for providing this resource and outlet for the likes of us:-- some grateful, some who just take the whole thing for granted, some who feel that Max owes them something, and some (including the latter) who are a royal pain in the ass. Picky, picky, picky.

Thanks, Max. I'm not sure why you put up with it, but bless you for it.

It's Ok with me-change happens slowly sometimes, sometimes it's quicker-I don't care really as long as Mudcat keeps going.

To "guest" (Oh vitriolic one) maybe you do meet others, maybe you should (and perhaps you hide behind some other facade) why don't you get to a gathering, meeting or whatever, to meet people who dig this place? Then you'd see what Max has made happen.(And I'm not a sychophantic spawning git) I just think this place is great-don't care what others think, I know what I've got out of it in real terms as will as cyberspace.

From: Joe Offer

Well, yeah, I guess I have to admit that I get a little impatient at times, and I'd like to see the new Mudcat come online. Pene comes up with new features and little improvements almost every day, and I get the pleasure of testing them and submitting suggestions. Both Max and Pene have been very responsive to my suggestions, and it's a real pleasure to work with them. I know this stuff has to be tested, but I get impatient about it. Today, I worked half an hour on a rather complex message, and then clicked the "submit" button. One of Pene's innovations intercepted my message because it had a prohibited HTML tag, and the entire text of my message was lost and I had to do it all over again. As a result, Pene is working on a solution so that others won't lose their typing. I guess that's a good reason to wait a little longer. Many of Pene's minor improvements are online already - but the major ones are still being tested.

And yes, the Digital Tradition is a frustration, too. Here's what's on the Download Page right now. The most recent DOS version is October, 1999 (same as what's available in the online version); but it has been taken offline becuse it doesn't install with most anti-virus software packages. The slightly-buggy Windows version is from the April, 2000, edition of the database - but it has problems working on Windows 98 on my computer and probably won't work on Windows XP. There is a Mac version of the October, 2000, edition of the Digital Tradition - that's the most recent version of the database available, and it won't work on all versions of the Mac Operating System.

I suppose you've noticed that Pene and I and the JoeClones handle most of the day-to-day operations here at Mudcat. We do a lot, but we don't own Mudcat or the Digital Tradition - so we don't have the authority or the responsibility for the down-and-dirty basics of the operation. We don't want that authority and responsibility, either.

So, I guess I have to apologize that you have to wait until Max and Dick decide that things are ready for release. You may have to spend a little extra time looking for something - but it's all here at Mudcat, and Pene and I and the JoeClones are very happy to help you look.

-Joe Offer-

First off, it was exactly directed at the GUEST. This person is pathetic and needs to seek professional help.

I love the fact that this moron thinks that by referring to me as Little Mick that somehow that will get to me. It actually means just the opposite. I get to him/her so badly that s/he is flopping around looking for a way to get me back. You are a worthless slug. You prove it each time you post. Your only reason for living is to point out what is wrong with things so you can feel as though you have worth. In my profession I often point out inequities. Are you smart enough to catch the difference? You simply criticize. People of worth find inequity and look for solutions. You offer nothing positive, and continually try to cloak your low self esteem with "cooed" phrases as if you knew something the rest don't. Get help.

Now, .............. enough spent on that. I don't fawn over Max, but I am somewhat protective of him, as well as Jeff and Joe. Sure I have had my tiffs with them, but I appreciate them greatly. I recognize the sacrifices they make. As a result of their efforts, my circle of friends has increased greatly, and my music has grown in leaps and bounds. I have come to know people that I always wanted to emulate. That's not fawning, it is genuine appreciation.

Mick

Thank you for that explanation, Joe

I believe you do a superb job in difficult circumstances, and your dedication to being fair and reasonable is wonderful.

So thank you.

I do however (at the risk of being accused of trolling or flaming) get a little annoyed at Max saying things and not following them through.

Remember this from February:

MEMBERS: We are discussing our options and our technology now, and will post an Open Letter to Members in a week or two to explain what we have decided.

Well, Max?

Sure, he has no reason to change this, or even run this site etc. etc.

But why say things like that if they're not going to happen.

Better to stay silent, I think.

Richard, I understand why you would say that. I respect the fact that you identify yourself, in fact even with your email address. I am not sure how much you have been around the Mudcat, but may I make a suggestion? Please take the time to do a search on posts from unnamed GUESTS. Then do one on me. You will find that I am, at times, mercurial, but usually with a reason. You will also find times that I have apologized for wrong behaviour. I believe you will find also posts and threads of worth.

A while back, after reading yet another personal attack on a decent person, that I would not be silent about it. When I saw this person attacked in a way designed to attack their self worth, I decided that it was time for these perpetrators hiding as GUEST'S to get a dose of the same salt they were dishing out.

I don't expect that you will understand, or maybe you will. If you were to talk to those Mudcatters that have met me, I think you might find things about me you would like. Perhaps not, but I would hope so.

In the meantime, thanks for coming to the Mudcat. I hope you will join as a member and contribute in the future. It is not always like this, or even mostly like this.

I started a forum about two years ago on a subject I had a lot of interest in at the time. It is nowhere near the size that this community this is, but still a fairly popular forum for the niche it fills.

Over time, being a forum manager started to wear on my nerves. I had a lot of other things in my life that were important. I made promises about things I would do (specific to that forum) that I never kept. Lucky for me, the members were with one exception too kind to complain about it.

Now I am trying to find a graceful way to get out of the whole thing. My interests have changed, my time constraints have changed, my worldview has changed. And my new worldview is very much at odds with the purpose of the forum I created.

I'm not saying that is the case with the Mudcat, but I do think that often times criticisms are best kept to oneself. I wouldn't blame my forum members for criticizing me, but they would be doing so without an understanding of the entire situation. No one can see what's going on behind the scenes.

There are things about all of the forums I visit that get on my nerves. That is the nature of life.

Anyway, I don't know if anyone here either reads or cares about my posts, but sometimes I like to put my POV out there just in case.

I guess it's time to bite... I've watched the development from Joe Offers "bigotry thread" to this... I don't know if it's a co-incidence that "Guest Jon" happened to think the same way as I (another Jon) did. I had expressed similar thoughts in the help forum some time ago (and maybe in the main one too). It could well be a troll from the start but the question in itself seems reasonable and is perhaps genuine...

What I can be sure of is that in the threads I have read recently (admittedly not many) I have seen little of the trolling and flaming that there was a few months ago. It seems to me that (using a term developed by a troll I think) the Mudcat "swarm" has gathered and the effects, at least to me, are that I am once again aware of trolling and flaming within Mudcat.

IMO, the "Mudcat army" who put "GUESTS" in their place are far more damaging to the forum than the trolling/flaming itself".

Jon

Norton requested a default folksong that would play automatically while things were loading.

With all due respect to Norton, whom I count as one of my friends here and on Paltalk, I'd rather not have that. Or at least I'd like to have a "switch" which would turn it off for me. I frequent another site which does that, and frankly it's a pain in the buttinski. One, the selections don't fit my taste; two, even if they did, they never vary.

My .02 worth.

This didn't strike me a troll-engendered thread at all. A couple of posts along the way had that kind of quality, but nothing out of the way really; and it's easy enough to slide past them. I'd be unhappy at the idea that this kind of thing should drive us away from a thread about something that's of some interest.

Musical thread drift. Here's the slug national anthem from that site I gave a link to.

When my sons were little, they'd beg me to do things with them, or for them. As a young Father, I'd say... "all right, we'll do it on Saturday"... go see Star Wars or Ghost Busters. Then sure enough, Saturday morning I couldn't get my car running and we were way too far to walk to the movie theater. When I'd tell them we couldn't go they'd whine in harmony, "But Dad, You promised!" This thread makes me very nostalgic. I haven't heard little voices whining, "but you promised!" in a long time. Now that my oldest son is a young father, he has learned the wisdom that I passed down to him. I learned to say, "We'll see.." My sons used to get really irritated with me, and they'd say, "What does that mean?" And I'd answer, just what it says, "We'll see?"

I ask you, Guests..."why is it so important to you to criticize Max for not being able to pull this off as fast as he thought he could?" There is so much to enjoy AS IS. What's your hurry? Are you sincerely anxious for this to happen? Whatever it might be? It's hard for me to believe that.

My encouragement to Max(I have no idea who he is, but I am indebted to him for Mudcat) and Joe is, learn to say "We'll see..." I suspect that if you were going on a trip with these guests in your car, they'd be asking, "Are we there yet?", before you pulled out of the driveway. I don't find comments like some of those by "Guests" irritating. I find them very juvenile.. and extremely ungracious..

Two big Huzzahs for Man and Joe (who I wouldn't know if I passed on the street.)

Actually KimC, I think if you polled every poster in Mudcat, you would likely find a majority of folks who have given considerable time as volunteers to many organizations over the years. And probably quite a few who work for no-profit/volunteer organizations as a career.

Which is precisely why some of us are skeptical/sarcastic about the update issue--particularly when the promise of the update has been broken repeatedly. Some of us knows what that means on the ground, because we've been there, been burned, and won't get fooled again by the warm and fuzzy testimonials from the sycophant chorus.

For me personally, I wouldn't care if the forum disappeared tomorrow. Too many other good music forums on-line to turn to for me to get upset. But the DT could truly have been something great. Unfortunately, it is a resource that has been squandered by it's owner. Hence some people's cynicsm and sarcasm about it.

Not the party line - you appear to be confusing the Digital Tradition with the Mudcat - two seperate entities.

And FWIW, I am guessing the reason why we have seen a virtual end to updates here and at DT are for the reasons outlined above by irishajo. Disinterest, but inability to be honest and come clean about it.

I'd like to send you a vote of confidence about your own situation though irishajo. I think one is always best off to come clean. Often there are others waiting in the wings to pick up where we leave off, and the consequences of that can be quite positive. As can be letting things die their natural death. People really can survive that sort of loss and adapt quite readily. Remember, this is, at the end of the day, only an Internet website. We've seen lots of great ones go under in the last decade.

Nothing stays the same. And that isn't a bad thing at all.

That's it, folk, keep picking at the scabs until they bleed. Why the hell can't you all just leave stuff alone?

MMario, on p 1 of Mudcat, the very first feature listed (which is no accident) is DT. I know who's who and what's what.

For people that really don't care, you slugs can't seem to let it go. Like I said, it is about your pitiful self image, so you just have to be right. But you aren't.

Well said, Joe. When it gets here, if it gets here.........doesn't matter. The place is what it is.

Out of this one.

Well, Giok, that's kinda the point, technophobeknownuthins....

There are some HTML tags that give us fits, that are not particularly useful to Mudcatters. Pene Azul has blocked the use of those tags. Most of the time, they come up when you copy-paste from another site, and that site has some tags that will cause us problems.

This may be a pretty good basic rule: if you don't know what a tag will do, please don't post it - but Pene has blocked most of those tags, so it probably won't cause us a problem. The main blocked tag that will be inconvenient to some Mudcatters is tables. In cases where you need to use tables, send a personal message to Pene or Jeri or me, and we'll make sure the table gets posted for you.

Now, normal links aren't blocked, so I'm wondering what you had in your message....
