At the risk of winding up the monarchists here and putting 'em off their Ovaltine, Billy Bragg is launching an attempt to get to the top of the UK charts next month with an anti-jubilee song.
I, for one, wish him the best of luck!
Details here, or send an e-card with a clip and details by clicking here
One another tack entirely, apparently Bragg wiped the floor with other contestants on a celebrity edition of the TV quiz The Weakest Link on Mayday. Nice to see that folkies are brighter than other musical tupes. And he donated his prize money to the Living Wage Campaign.

It's a nice idea, but I don't think he's got a hope in hell of getting the number 1 that week.

Both Will Young's (aka Pop Idol twerp) new single and the England World Cup Song are released that week.

Shame...

I'm bemused because Billy Bragg born in Barking now abides in Burton Bradstock... He likes the letter B....

All the same, it's a damned good idea - I've not heard one Jubilee celebration that hasn't been badly planned, not planned at all or just downright jingoistic shite. Where are the Jubilee Mugs and the Jubilee crowns? I remember my silver ones from 25 years ago (OK so the mug was crappy but it was free), and have seen nothing like them so far this year....

And if it's Billy, it's got to be a great song, regardless of the subject matter.

On the Anne Robinson show (what's it called?), he voted off a lady contestant. Smug Face (for it is she) asked him why. "Because she's got red hair, and I've just taken a dislike to women with red hair", says he, po-faced as ever.

She had more sense than to take him on...maybe she'd heard about the House of Commons committee that he'd recently taken on single-handed and torn then to shreds.

Not sure I agree with all of his beliefs, but I do adnire the man. And he'll be at Cambridge again this year, which I'm looking forward to.

Pete

Ah, Gervase, if only I actually understood the significance of all this. I know where Wales is, even if ol' Dubya doesn't, but...What's a Jubilee exactly? Why's BIlly against it? Does the queen have much to do with wage setting? Is there ANY chance his actions could be self-serving? The link to Living Wage doesn't work for me. I went to Billy's site. I'm not normally suspicious, but it look like self promotion to me, smart but shameless. And what the hell is wrong with Paul McCartney singing to the Queen? Help me understand, you folks. I've stood for the union and walked in the line, and sung Joe Hill and the Union Maid, too, but the significance of anti-jubillee excapes me. regards, Chance

Fortunato,

A Jubilee is a celebration in this context at least to mark the Queen's 50th year on the throne. The Queen as far as I know has zero to do with wage setting (although while we're at it Mr. Blair that minimum wage needs to be more like £5.50 -6.00 to allow people some sort of life and not just an existence)the Queen here has the power to block goverment bills and is the head of state, but a lot of her role is ceremonial rather than actual. As for McCartney singing to the Queen I find that one personally hilarious. This is the man who had, "Give Ireland Back To The Irish", banned on account of it been a political song once upon a time ISTR. Been Irish myself I rather tend to Seamus Heaney's point about No glass ever been raised in our house to the Queen.

On another chance, anyone here live in London where we have one of the few nice things to come from the Jubilee so far - the Buses which have been repainted in a nice new gold coat of paint.

Marcus, thanks for your help. It's frightening the stuff I don't know.

I didn't know Paul McCartney had that song banned. How did he do that? Banned where? From being recorded? Played? Sung?

I didn't know the Queen will be 50 years on the throne. I generally favor celebrations of any kind. So if Billy promotes anti-jubillee it means he doesn't want her to be Queen anymore because the minimum wage is too low? He feels it's her fault? Or is it that there should be no celebration, but rather the money spent should be distributed to those making the minimum wage?

I also don't know who Seamus Heany is, but I gather he's not drinking to the queen because he feels she's a symbol of oppression of some people who are Irish. I presume this means he would be anti-jubillee, as well. Well this I can somewhat relate to. We don't raise a glass to anyone except each other in our house. If we did drink to a politician it wouldn't be Dubya.

It's nice about the new paint on the busses. But I thought they were red?

cheers, Chance

Fortunato,

They decided to do some of the buses in a nice new gold colour for the Jubilee year - they should keep it I think - But then as I don't like the colour red I would say that. Paul McCartney's song fell under a particular section of English law whereby certain songs (or other material) liable to cause political unrest can be banned from been performed - It's not invoked much any more mind you, but if I was to sing an Irish Republican song while wandering around East London the police could arrest me in theory. Seamus Heaney is a famous Irish poet (also a Nobel prize winner) who is an ambigous republican -in that he supports Irish re-unification but not via violence. I don't think we Irish are pro or anti-Jubilee really, personally it doesn't matter one way or the other to me.

I thought the biggest waste of money in Britain on a celebration was the ill-fated Millenium Dome of recent years myself to be honest.

Subject: Take Down the Union Jack - Billy Bragg
From: Joe Offer
Date: 03 May 02 - 11:06 AM

OK, can we get a transcription of "Take Down the Union Jack"? Here's what I heard here (click)
-Joe Offer-
Take down the Union Jack
It clashes with the sunset
And put it in the attic
With the emperor's old clothes

When did it fall apart?
Sometime in the eighties
When the great and the good gave way
To the greedy and the mean.

Do I have it right? Anybody have more? By the way, since this has to do with music, I deleted the "BS" designation from the thread title.

I am no Royalist and support Billy's political viewpoint but let's not get blinded by the guy. As a piece of music this is rubbish and the lyrics are banal.
If you want money for the campaign I'll willingly give but don't try to con me by putting this up as a come on.
Do it the way you've always done it Billy, straight! John Heath
