Noel Coward recorded this one....he did it very well in that bored-sounding voice of his. I haven't heard the Don MacLean version.

Ivor Novello was jailed during the last war for using forged petrol coupons. He was sent to Wormwood Scrubs jail, where he was given priveleged treatment, and a private cell. There is a song that was written about this to the tune of The Girl I left Behind Me.

This page says Ivor Novello was born January 15th, 1893, and died March 6th, 1951 - "the Welsh actor, composer and playwright who was Britain's greatest genius of the musical stage."
It's on the 1992 Don McLean CD called Favorites and Rarities, which I see is for sale at Amazon for $99.99. I'll gladly sell my copy for $99.98 - or even less.

Hi GUEST Martin, the music is indeed credited to Ivor Novello and the lyrics to Dion Titheradge.
Since posting this thread in 2002 I also saw Gosford Park and, although I found the movie labourious, noted the clip you mentioned with interest.
I have heard a few re-workings of old 20s/30s songs, in particular James Taylors' version of "Walking my baby back home" and I think they work quite well.

I've just been watching a video of a film called Gosford Park in which one of the characters, one Ivor Novello, sings some of his own creations, 'And Mother Came Too'. I wondered if this was where Don McLean got his less charlestonesque version from?

I was reminded recently of a song sung by Don Maclean about his Mother/Mother-in-law. I think it's called "And Mother Came Too". I've no idea if it's a Maclean composition but I can't find any mention of the song on any of the sites I've found. Can anybody help?
