Subject: RE: Req: Don McLean song: And Her Mother Came Too From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Apr 04 - 12:42 AM Here are 2 more verses, transcribed from a sound file at The Virtual Gramophone: We started walking, And her mother came too. We both were talking, And her mother was too. The street was icy, you see. She tumbled down on her knee. My darling fell hard for me, And her mother did too. We arrive at the movies, And her mother comes too. It costs two berries, Still her mother comes too. When Valentino is there, My darling forgets ev'ry care, And simply gives me the air, And her mother does too. |

Subject: Lyr Add: AND HER MOTHER CAME TOO! From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Jan 04 - 11:02 PM Copied from http://members.aol.com/Novello/mother.html AND HER MOTHER CAME TOO! (Words, Dion Titheradge. Music, Ivor Novello. ©1921) I seem to be the victim of a cruel jest. It dogs my footsteps with the girl I love the best. She's just the sweetest thing that I have ever known, But still we never get the chance to be alone. My car will meet her, And her mother comes too! It's a two-seater. Still her mother comes too! At Ciro's when I am free, At dinner, supper or tea, She loves to shimmy with me, And her mother does too! We buy her trousseau, And her mother comes too! Asked not to do so, Still her mother comes too! She simply can't take a snub; I go and sulk at the club, Then have a bath and a rub, And her brother comes too! There may be times when couples need a chaperone, But mothers ought to learn to leave a chap alone. I wish they'd have a heart and use their common sense, For three's a crowd, and more, it's treble the expense. We lunch at Maxim's, And her mother comes too! How large a snack seems When her mother comes too! And when they're visiting me, We finish afternoon tea, She likes to sit on my knee, And her mother does too! To golf we started, And her mother came too! Three bags I carted, When her mother came too! She fainted just off the tee, My darling whispered to me, "Jack, dear, at last we are free!" But her mother came to! |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Don Maclean song From: C-flat Date: 12 Jan 04 - 12:41 PM Hi GUEST Martin, the music is indeed credited to Ivor Novello and the lyrics to Dion Titheradge. Since posting this thread in 2002 I also saw Gosford Park and, although I found the movie labourious, noted the clip you mentioned with interest. I have heard a few re-workings of old 20s/30s songs, in particular James Taylors' version of "Walking my baby back home" and I think they work quite well. C-flat. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Don Maclean song From: GUEST,martin Date: 12 Jan 04 - 11:55 AM dear C-flat I've just been watching a video of a film called Gosford Park in which one of the characters, one Ivor Novello, sings some of his own creations, 'And Mother Came Too'. I wondered if this was where Don McLean got his less charlestonesque version from? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Don Maclean song From: C-flat Date: 04 May 02 - 09:11 AM It doesn't look like Guest Simon is returning, I must have been too slow taking him up on the offer. If there's anyone else who can help with this I'd be grateful. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Don Maclean song From: C-flat Date: 03 May 02 - 02:23 AM Simon, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. My partner, who is far cleverer than me, says she can show me what to do with an MP3 file. Would you be kind enough to send it to me? Thanks in advance. |

Subject: Don Maclean song From: C-flat Date: 02 May 02 - 01:55 PM I was reminded recently of a song sung by Don Maclean about his Mother/Mother-in-law. I think it's called "And Mother Came Too". I've no idea if it's a Maclean composition but I can't find any mention of the song on any of the sites I've found. Can anybody help? |
