Searching for a friend who sent me this note. I have had no luck.

Do any of you 'catters recognize it?

Thanks......Tiger (note follows)

----------------------------

I've been trying to find the words to an old song for my mothers friend (a very lovely 75 year old gentleman). He thought the song was called "Dear Old Uncle Ned" but you sent me the words to that song and it's not the right one.

I was hopeing that if i told you the words of the song that he can remember you might be able to help me, (i'm getting desperate). This is what he remembers, with a line missing here and there.

At a New York steamboat landing
Sat a darkie old and gray
When a stranger passing by approached and said
Bless your heart is that you Dear Old Uncle Ned
    Yes that's me massa Harry
How's old Mrs and Black Cole
And tell me are my picininnys alive or dead

No luck with this song, but there're several "Uncle Ned" songs other than Foster in Newman I. White, American Negro Folk-Songs (pp. 164-166) and in Thomas Talley's Negro Folk Rhymes (newly ed. by Wolfe, pp. 53-54).

Hi, Masato.....

Did you actually check those books against my song snippet, or are they references that need to be looked up?

Tiger, I did check them up. They (all of them are titled "Uncle Ned") are different songs.

Not found in Christy's Nigga Songster (only the usual Old Ned derived from Foster). I would guess that the song is from near 1890 from the verse provided.
