If I'm not mistaken (which is certainly possible) it was on a Doc Watson recording. If I were a contestant on a quiz show and pressed for some kind of answer, I'd say the author was Jimmie Rodgers. I've no idea if that's actually so, but that's the kind of feel the song has. It's in waltz time. "Sleep, little baby, sleepy..." - those are the only lines I can recall, though I can produce a bit more of the melody. They may be the first lines of the first verse, or perhaps of the refrain.
