I got the song and lyric from The Irish Descendants' CD "Gypsies and Lovers" and know nothing about the songwriter or his song. I like the song and the CD on which I found it.

i realise why i could never find the song before- its because i didn't have the proper title

there may be one verse missing, something about juliet & romeo, ophelia, cleopatra & mark anthony, however, thanks to your help i should be able to find them

According to my wee song book the missing verse is ....

Romeo tells me that Juliet can't live without him
And Ophelia's crazy for Hamlet who wants to be king
And away in the distance, Mark Anthony loves Cleopatra,
as Portia sits silent, soliloquizing in the wings.

It's the fourth verse of the song and the words and music are by Adrian Mannering. Angie xx

Didn't find a sound file, but I don't think it's PD. He was born in 1948.

I'm wondering if anyone has new information to add to this old thread. Does anyone know how to reach Adrian Mannering or someone who represents him? I'd like to record the song "Lovers" that's mentioned here, but can't seem to find any info on how to make sure he gets his fair share of whatever wee amount the sales may earn.

Adrian and I sang together often in the Anchor Bar, in Dunmore East,
Co. Waterford, together with the Fureys. Many songs were exchanged
on these evenings, I know Finbar learnt it from Adrian.
I think Adrian went on to be a lawyer of fairly high standing, I could be wrong, but he was a great singer and songwriter in those
days.

I recall Downes and Beer doing this beautifully and mentioning that the writer was an Irish lawyer. I am glad to see that Pat Cooksey has confirmed that my memory is at least partly still working!

The song is not in the public domain as Adrian is alive and well. The other thread was tending to credit the song to the Fureys who recorded it, but did not write the song.

Hiya Declan, I'm sure I've heard you singing it in the GAA club. I first heard it sung by Paddy Green (father of Mary Greene) in Dunmore East. I believe Paddy once owned the Anchor bar which is referred to earlier in this thread.

We just got back from our annual trip to Ireland and while in Galway walking through Eyre Square got talking with a fellow named Adrian who exchanged some songs with us. He sang Soldiers in dreams and said he had written it. Researching this song now it is a treat to know it must have been Adrian Mannering! Very pleasant chap who added an exclamation point to our trip. Will add the song to the playlist and perform it in Maine.

No, this singer is Christine Maringer-Tries. I know her. Together with her husband she makes music and they call themselves "Duo Balance".
