Subject: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint? From: The Admiral Date: 10 May 02 - 10:28 AM We held a Theme Night last night at Maidenhead entitled 'Always Remembered' and to no-ones suprise it turned into a Dave Houlden Parody fest, nothing gloomy but celebrative. Anyway, Malcolm Austen (a Master of Parodies himself and moving spirit behind the original and reprinted copies of the Dave H Parody book) suggested that if there was enough reponse he would consider do a third print run. So he would like to know a) how many would be interested if he were to organise another run, b) if he were to, are there any modifications ie: typos, etc that should be made to issue 2 and c) are there any more songs of Daves out there that weren't captured the first or second time round? Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: Joan from Wigan Date: 10 May 02 - 01:01 PM A search in the DT/Forum brings up the songs "Bogled" (DT) and "The Gladiator Song" (in one of the threads). If these are examples of Dave's songwriting ability, put me down for a copy of the book please! Joan |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: Micca Date: 10 May 02 - 02:14 PM I am interested, as my copy seems to have gone walkies!! an Malcolm "ought" to include "the Gladiator" this time!! since Dave, at least "embellished, and added to" and certainly made possible its revival!! Joan, you have heard another one too! as I am sure you have heard me do his splendid song " Hyperbole" |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: Herga Kitty Date: 10 May 02 - 02:28 PM And I suspectJoan might have heard the parody of Napoleon Bonaparte "I was just about to fall apart, I'd had more than my ration, I'd had 10 pints of Breakspear's, they'd have done me on their own...." which is another of Dave's. |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: GUEST,The Admiral (at home) Date: 11 May 02 - 07:33 AM Dave didn't actually write 'The Gladiator', we haven't been able to source that one so I guess it could be classed as traditional. However, he did add several verses and did introduce it to the folk world. Tony |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: GUEST,MCP Date: 11 May 02 - 10:08 AM Tony - I though this was sourced. Here's an extract from an old post of mine on uk.music.folk (Check DejaNews for group: uk.music.folk, text:"Gladiator" to find all the threads: "This version is that as sung by Dave Houlden late of the Maidenhead FC. I asked Malcolm Austen (who edited the posthumous collection 'I Never Meant To Be Taken Literally - the songs and parodies of Dave Houlden, and no mean parodist himself) last night for Dave's source. IIRC, the song was written by Bruce Campbell who at that time was working for Wethered's Brewery at Marlow, and this was responsible for the song being widely known along the river. Dave modified the original into the version posted." Mick (MCPearce0ATaolDOTcom)

Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: Herga Kitty Date: 11 May 02 - 01:49 PM Here are the notes from the two sets of words that Dave typed out at different times: Note 1. (from a set of words typed by Dave and given to Sylvia Watts) Written by Bruce Campbell, Wethered's Brewery groundsman in Marlow pre-war. Song believed to have been written for a show in about 1940, subsequently became popular in Marlow and Maidenhead rugby and rowing clubs, which is where I got it. There was one more Campbell written verse which mentioned the Pontine Marshes, but I fear that this is lost. Note 2. ( from a different set of typed words from Dave) The Gladiators. Written in about 1940 by one Bruce Campbell, Groundsman at Wethered's Brewery in Marlow. The best information I can get says that he died some years ago. (no indication is given as to when this was) Kitty |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: Herga Kitty Date: 11 May 02 - 01:57 PM Guest MCP The computer you set up is coming up with messages saying "System memory low", and can't even update the Norton anti-virus. Any suggestions you might have for making space and saving data would be appreciated. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: GUEST,The Admiral (at home) Date: 11 May 02 - 02:43 PM Kitty and Mick I stand corrected or at least maybe, I knew about the groundsman at Wethereds and that Dave learnt his original version fron him at Marlow Rowing Club but I hadn't been told that he had written 'The Gladiator' also I have heard at least three different versions from different directions. Was it possible the groundsman was singing a version that he had picked up from somewhere else? Tony |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: Raggytash Date: 11 May 02 - 09:38 PM Please put me down for a copy, I was lucky enough to share a pint or two with Dave & Pearl, and they made me coffee after more than one boozy night at Bracknell. Treasured memories indeed. |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: Raggytash Date: 23 Jun 02 - 07:16 AM Has any progress been made on this wonderful idea? |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: Joan from Wigan Date: 24 Jun 02 - 03:56 AM We await with bated breath! |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: Dave Bryant Date: 24 Jun 02 - 05:41 AM Put me down for a copy. Dave Blagrove, who originally came from the Reading area, also credits the Gladiator song to Bruce Campbell. His version is fairly similiar to the one Dave Houlden sang and as far as I know was picked up quite independently. I don't know if anyone can remember the "Marrow Wassail" custom which Dave "researched" - it was hilarious. It was even funnier when we actually performed it at "The Old Bell", Hurley (which I think is now a restaurant). I'll find out if Sheila Finn has a copy in the Folk London archives - I published it as an article when I was editor. It would be fun to resurrect it, and it would also be great if it could be included in the book. |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: Herga Kitty Date: 24 Jun 02 - 05:37 PM Well, if there are additional songs in it you can put me down for another copy.... |
Subject: RE: Dave Houlden Parody Book - Reprint From: The Admiral Date: 25 Jun 02 - 08:54 AM I have mailed this to Malcolm Austen but I've a feeling that he's in Copenhagen for the early part of this week so you may have to wait for a response.... |
