Thanks ljc, I have enough trouble reading your posts without trying to decipher this guy! What IS that accent? Sometimes he sounds Irish, then Cornish and then he throws in a little deep-South U.S.A.! Very amusing though.

I understand that they're the butt of many jokes in the way the Irish have been in the U.K.

Newfoundlander accents are the best accents in the world, with Scots accents being a very close second.

And like the Scottish accent it takes a while to "tune into". I'm always amazed at how there aren't more regional variations in the U.S. Here in the U.K. if you travel 20 miles in any direction you come across another dialect, some of which are really hard to pick up and follow. It certainly has given comedians plenty of material though!

The variety o' accents here in Newfoundland is amazing. The St johns,or townie accent,is practically indestiguishable from the Waterford valley in Ireland. The southern shore is rural Ireland.Conception bay is Dorset.i could go on,but you get the picture.
However,I admit that"Buddies"accent is slightly overdone to cater to the humour of other Newfoundlanders.
One of"The other fellows" has an old song"Sarah"that he sings in his natural accent.I will post it shortly. ljc

BTW. the Source of the original Newfoundlander jokes is Newfoundland itself. As with the Cape Bretoners, they told the original jokes about themselves to the world.

It takes a bit of getting used to, LJC's "spelling". Personally, I suspect it is a ploy to keep the American CIA from understanding his messages. Sort of like the WWII trick of using Navaho (sp?) communications clerks.

If you want to hear a great variety of Newfoundlander accents (without being in Newfoundland), listen to the fishing report on CBC1 out of St. John's. It's on sometime during the afternoon, Newfoundland time. I think maybe sometime around 3:00 or 4:00PM. Peope call in to the show from all over the Island, and you can hear a lot of different of accents.
