I had a single with this song by Barry Moore (now known as Luka Bloom) but I lost it. The song is about uranium mining. Lyrics I remember are:
Take a lion from the mountain
Lock him in a cage
He'll fight you to surrender (? /for survival?)/In another age (/a nuclear age??)

(chor)
See our mountains falling down
See our mountains, just a dumping ground.

Barry/Luka site with lots of lyrics here. (If you scroll down there is a normal menu and you don't have to deal with the floating globes.

Yeah, I checked that site too, Sorcha, but this particular song doesn't seem to be in it.

Subject: Lyr Add: THERE'S A DRAGON (Charles Thomson)
From: GUEST,Philippa
Date: 20 May 02 - 06:10 PM

No further progress in getting the rest of the words to Lion in a Cage. Meanwhile, here's the poem from a school textbook that made me think about Barry Moore's lyrics:

THERE'S A DRAGON
Charles Thomson

There's a dragon in a motor car,
a dragon, so it's said
a dragon in a motor car
that fills the air with lead.

There's a dragon in a chimney stack,
a dragon, it's no joke,
a dragon in a chimney stack
that fills the sky with smoke.

There's a dragon in the ocean waves;
just watch its limbs uncoil,
a dragon in the ocean waves
that drowns the birds in oil.

There's a dragon by the river bank
who has an evil wish,
all day it drivels toxic saliva
that kills off all the fish.

There's a dragon underneath the ground
whose power will not pass,
it sweats out noxious chemicals
that poison crops and grass.

There's a dragon in the power station
all year it quietly breathes,
there's a dragon in the power station
that could fill whole towns with wreaths

There's a dragon in the heart of man,
invisible as a rule,
there's a dragon in the heart of man,
the most dangerous dragon of all.

LION OF THE MOUNTAIN
(Barry Moore)

There's a creature on the mountain lived in perfect peace,
Been there in his slumber through all the centuries.
Happy in the mountain, peaceful left alone,
Lately he's been hunted, taken from his home.

Man brought him to the city, locked him in a hole,
In this evil captivation, he burned with anger in his soul.
Take a lion from the mountain, lock him in a cage,
He'll fight you with a vengeance in another age.

See our waters laden down,
See our waters, just a dumping ground.

This creature in the city grows more angry in his pain.
He burns with deadly hatred. He must be moved again.
There are ships out on the ocean sailing through the night
Bearing cargo of destruction sailing slowly.

Now the creature of the mountain waits in anger in the sea.
He will poison all around him. He'll punish you and me.
Once he was so peaceful. Now he's full of hate.
He was taken from the mountain. He longs to seal our fate.

I see this song has also been recorded by Dolores Keane, thought I don't recall hearing her rendition

I think you'll find that the Dolores Keane recording of Lion in a Cage is a song about Nelson Mandela written by John Faulkner.
