Subject: The Gaelic Goddess (tries) To Go Blonde!
From: Áine
Date: 11 May 02 - 08:07 PM

OK, it's my birthday; so, I went out today with the credit card (and strict instructions on my limit from Dear Hubby) and spent a few hours away from the kiddos, cats, dogs and doting husband; getting my hair done, buying sexy lingerie, clothes, shoes, and a handbag.

On a whim (and after a subtle suggestion from my hairdresser), I wandered into the hair color aisle at Target. Mmmmmmm, I thought, wouldn't it be cool to go blonde for my birthday -- and wouldn't it look really cool with the black lingerie laying at the bottom of my cart -- and wouldn't that put Dear Hubby in a certain mood? So, I fell victim to my impulse and bought a hair dye -- don't freak, it was temporary and organic.

Came home, announced to Dear Hubby that I would be busy in the bathroom for about half an hour and he would really like the result. He'd already seen the black lingerie, so -- shall I say he was up for anything?? ;-)

Half an hour later, processes followed by the letter, and blow drying done -- I'm stareing in the mirror at my RED hair. It's STILL RED -- I can't believe this!! I was expecting at least strawberry blonde; but NO, IT'S STILL RED.

Now, I'd bought the next-to-the-lightest shade on the shelf. What's up with this? I've never tried to go blonde before. Is there a conspiracy against redheads, or what? Should I give up before I turn up with some freaky colour of orange? Is red still 'in'? Should I just accept my redness??? Please discuss. ;-)

-- Áine

Be glad you didn't get an "ash" colour and turn it green, darlin'...happened to a friend of mine in school.

To really be effective, you probably have to use a semi-permanent or bleach it out totally, first, then apply the dye...not worth it, imo. Be proud of yer red, I say!! Not much of mine is left, but I had a friend convince me to let it go natch-er-all 'cause she showed me a book on redheads, all photographs and the cover one was about the same faded out shade as mine!

When I did dye mine with blond I got a strawberry, but it was always with a permanent colour. So...were you hoping to find out if blondes really do have more fun? Was DH still up for anything? No fair teasing and leaving us hanging! LOL

Unfortunately, blonde is the most difficult to get. You have to use a permanant product with bleach in it. I tried one of those organic pieces of crap just to highlight the red in mine--didn't even do that. IMO the organic hair dyes are worthless.

If you've got red hair, why the hell would you even WANT to colour it???

We red-heads have the colour that everyone else wants and can't have...

I imagine you'd need to bleach it first, and then dye it the colour you want.

But it might all fall out... You don't want to do that surely? I'm sure there are a lot more songs about red-headed ladies than there are about blondes, in the realm of folksongs anyway.

Dear Clinton -- You have a good point! I've never heard a single dumb redhead joke ;-) I guess I was just trying to give Dear Hubby a little lift, so to speak. And the fact is, I was so excited at being out of the house, feeling great, looking purty (well, as good as it gets anyway) . . . so, I got carried away for a moment. Aren't I lucky that the dye didn't take? I could have ended up looking like that awful comedian, Carrotop. (Ugh times 100!).

Impulsive I may have been (and probably shall be again); but, no bleach shall touch this head, ever! Oh well, I guess I'll just have to think of something else to put a smile on Dear Hubby's face this evening . . . now, where did I put that belly dancing instruction video tape . . . ???

Aine,
Don't screw around with any of that over the counter stuff. If and when you are ready, go to a RECOMMENDED hair dresser and get it done right.
Mary, who is done with getting it done at all.

I tried to go blonde once, too... I hid in the house for three days admiring my hair, trying not to look in the mirror to see how horribly the hair clashed with my skin tone, before giving in and dyeing it back to a nice medium brown. I look great normally, thank goodness.

FORTUNATELY I had also picked up a bottle that looked close to my natural shade before I bleached...

I actually prefer brown hair now, and am very thankful that all the dye has grown out. Wouldn't mind a nice red, but the rest of me would look rather GREEN if I did that! UGH!

I am really beginning to think that Mother Nature knows what she's doing... with most of us, anyway.

I hated my red hair for it's disadvantages as a kid(always getting caught for roguery and the usual tauntings)but I learned to be proud of it in later life.Over here in Denmark lots of the women many of whom are blonde try to dye their hair red but it always looks fake and I don't know about the other guys on the forum but the thought of a RED haired woman in black lingerie with lust on her mind definitely gets my pulse going.

LOL! I get a kick out of all this because daughter Kate does something weird to her hair all the time. Hasn't fallen out yet. I really liked it when she stripped all the natural color (ash brown) out and then had it streaked neon green. One summer for the lake (always 4th July/Independence Day) she did red, white and blue. Hey, at least I can find her in a crowd, and if that is the ONLY thing she does, I'll be thankful!

Right now hers is fairly normal, but her boyfriend did the serious bleach job and then dyed his a sort of fuschia red........kids.

The taunts just made me prouder of my red hair and freckles...oh what I'd give, now, to hear "hey Woody Woodpecker" when I have it in a ponytail, but the last bout with colour, even from a beauty shop, was too hard on it. You gals who keep your hair cut short can get away with that easier 'cause it grows out so fast.:-)

So...perky ya-yas AND red hair...I'll bet DH is purty happy with that anyway!**BG**

As a brunnett you need to use a POWERFUL bleach to make your hair blond. Do not use Over-The-Counter-Consumer products...but go to a commercial/professional/cosmotologist supply store.

Quick Blue and Volume 40 Peroxide will do the trick. (cost about $10 US)

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

It could be worse! At school I had to play "the black man from the hills" in some modern rendition of an old fingalian legend. (Our drama teacher was a bit like that!) Some Idiot decided that they would colour my hair black. No problen after all Ive got dark brown hair to begin with, so I was left in the care of a lass who swore she knew what she was doing! My scalp has never been the same since. It took weeks to get it of my skin, and the burning sensation, mhh, So take heart, at least you will not look like death warmed up!

Hey, Áine!

Long is GOOD. Bleached and dyed is NOT. It's downright unnachul!!

Besides, ya know...ummm... ya don't want to be a two-tone job, if you see what I mean!!

And you probably don't want to even think about the tribulations of really making yourself look like a natural blonde!!! :>)

If it were me I'd be giving thanks for having that powerful Irish Goddess hair of yours, and flaunt it!

Now, Clinton...that's just not true. Some of us pull off red fairly well even though it's not our true color (she says hopefully).

Henna is amazing stuff. It gives you the look of healthy undied red hair for a fraction of the price of a dye job.

And also...Aine? You don't wanna be a blonde...really. Red is *so* much more fun! I went from blonde to red, so I can tell you there really *is* a difference in how you feel and are preceived.

I don't know what color your real hair is, but if it's brown or darker no temporary color will make it blonde. I was a blond for a while and I used L'Oreal Preference - it works great! Usually to go blond the product has to have something in it that takes the natural color out - you can't just cover it up. But I went from blond to red and I love it! Red is definitely in. Go with it!

You sent me a photo once, Áine, and your natural shade is lovely, so why mess with it! And bleaching isn't good for hair condition. Not that it's my business, but you asked us all. Now can somebody come in with a verse and make this a song thread? (Oh do not dye your hair girls ...)

Clinton? When one has hardwood floors, the carpet doesn't have to match the curtains. ;D

And you may haved laughed...as you say, you know the diff. Maybe so, maybe no, but as I have already admitted it's not my natural color, we'll never know. I would like to hear what you think though...go check out the pics page and fill me in!

But really, whether people know it's not natural or no, I like it, so that's all that matters. :D

I dyed mine blue once. It was one of those temporary rinses for black hair, that was supposed to give subtle blue highlights and rinse out after 6 washes. It turned my blonde hair a nice dark blue and lasted 6 months, going from dark blue to purple, to ash grey!

I got bored with the (real) grey a few weeks ago and went for a temporary red rinse. My aunt and cousin have bright red hair, my mother also had quite a lot of red. Mine originally had lots of red in it, but enough blonde so it didn't look red. The red rinse doesn't look too out of place but I must remember not to wear the purple top....

I used to have red hair in the winter and almost blonde hair in the summer, from sun bleaching. Now I have a "blonde" head in the winter and a red head in the summer.

Micca said, "...how many "blondes" have GREEN eyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" My dear, around here, (southern New Brunswick, Canada) with the mix of Irish and French, there are lots of them.

Blonde with red roots? Now, that would've been strange. Much better to stick with natural red hair. I'm with you, Áine; no nasty chemical stuff goes on this scalp either. Unfortunately for me, that means that my brown hair is growing a skunk-stripe of gray on top, that will no doubt widen with time. The worst part is that those gray hairs are so much curlier and kinkier than the brown ones!

Áine, If you wanna be blonde, just do what Dolly Parton does--wear a wig! [Yes, she IS a blonde, but she wears wigs all the time on stage.] You won't ruin your own natural hair and you can return to being a gorgeous redhead any time you want.
Áine, if you do want to go blonde from a darker color, you have to strip first. Your hair, that is. I'm sure DH would appreciate a different kind of strip more!

Amos, [". ..ya don't want to be a two-tone job..."] and Clinton H ["...it's always very telling when the "carpet" doesn't match the "curtains"...], y' know that doesn't mean you're not a natural blonde [redhead, etc.] Amos is your beard the same color as the hair on your head?

Oh Amos, you are so nasty! FYI -- this carpet matches the curtains . . . and Martha Stewart couldn't do better, I'll tell ya -- and I bet she ain't no natural blonde!! ;-)

However, I've got a question for you natural redheads out there in Mudcat land -- do you have red hair on your arms and legs, too? Personally, I have 'invisible' hair -- it's not blonde, it's not red -- you just can't see the stuff unless you turn me in the right direction at the right time of day . . . and I dont' have any hair on my knuckles or toes, either. Am I just an underdeveloped albino, or what? ;-)

("We're not talking about salt andpepper here -- we're talking about ketchip and mayo! ") I dunno about ketchup and mayo, but I've seen a lotta guys with black pepper beards and cayenne on the top! Also quite a few with lemon colored hair on top and licorice on the beard. (Haven't checked under the kilt on most of 'em. Wouldn't be surprised it it wuz yet a third color!)

At last, something I know a fair bit about! Aine, enjoy the red hair; I'm sure it looks beautiful on you. I've been completely bleaching my hair for more years than I care to let on. I look best as a blonde, and my natural hair color is somewhat too dark for my complexion. My hair is thick, shiny, and strong with no split ends. Maybe I'm lucky, 'cause I do use Quick blue and 40 Volume Peroxide, but, I also do nothing else to it. No gels, sprays, mousse, or hair dryers.

When I tried to dye it back to what I thought was its original brown, I got a nice deep Auburn. It looked great, but faded quickly. Back to blonde.....after purple for a bit.

Have fun with it, love it, and hey, get some really temporory stuff (may I suggest "The Punky Professional")at the beauty supply place, and try an outrageous color for a day. It'll wow 'em at the PTA!
