I am haunted by a song I heard back in the Dark Ages (80s!). It used to be sung by a duo called Thistledown (where are you now, Mark and Trish?). It is a beautiful tune and the chorus runs something along the lines of:

"I have come to your town from a small rocky island [A further line] I will stay, I will stay"

Not much to go on I'm afraid but can anyone help? I THINK it related to someone going to live in the North East but not very sure.

Thanks

Rhiannon

After claiming that this rang no bells, I had a sudden enlightenment and remembered that this song was by Bob Skingle who sang on Teesside in the 70s and IIRC for some time sang with the Teesside Fettlers.

(Tune to follow later.)

Mick

I WILL STAY
Bob Skingle

Chorus:
You have tempted me her with your hills and your moorlands
Your clear mountain streams flowing down to the bay.
I have come to your town from a small rocky island
But in valley and highlands I will stay

There is smoke in the air from your tall factory chimneys
Red brick turns brown where kids laugh and play.
Your land lives with legend and sings with proud music
In your valleys and highlands I will stay.

I have walked by your river that flows dark and dirty
Seen you dressed in five colours of April and May.
Seen the smile in the eyes of your sons and your daughters
In your valleys and highlands I will stay.

I will stay by your meadows and wild open meadows. (sic)
Where heather grows golden where trees sing and sway
In the hot dusty air of your smokey old cities
In valleys and highlands I will stay.

I don't know! The lack of communication in this household! I've been asking you for this song for a couple of years now, knowing it was from your unbeloved homeland. Only when I put up a request do you remember it!!! lol

This song won first prize in a singer/songwriters competition on Teesside in the 70's. I believe Richard Grainger came second with "Teesside and Yorkshire"

Sorry - I forgot about this; I'll put the tune up a bit later.

Here's the tune as promised:

X:1
T:I Will Stay
M:4/4
L:1/4
Q:1/4=140
C:Bob Skingle
K:G
"Chorus:"B c|d2 B d|g2
w:You have tempt-ed me here
e c|A2 f e|e d2
w:With your hills and your moor-lands
(B/A/)|G2 e d|c2 c B|(A B) c d|B2
w:Your_ clear moun-tain streams flow-ing down_ to the bay
B c|d2 B d|g2 e c|A2 f e|e d
w:I have come to your town from a small rock-y is-land
B A|G2 e d|d c c B|G4-|G z||
w:But in val-ley and high-lands I will stay_
"Verse:"d d|e2 e g|(g f)
w:There is smoke in the air_
f e|d2 B d|g e3|
w:From your tall fact'-ry chim-neys
e e2 g|(g f) (f e)|d2 B d|e3
w:Red brick turns brown_ where_ kids laugh and play
e|e2 e g|g f2 e|d2 B d|g e2
w:Your land lives with leg-end and sings with proud mus-ic
e/ e/|e e2 e|e d c B|A4-|A z||
w:In your val-leys and high-lands I will stay_

The above is the version as printed in Sitting In The Sun, however ZM thinks line 3 of the chorus should end on d2 instead of B2 (bay) and we both think the chorus ended with I will stay repeated as:

B A|G2 e d|d c G E|D2 B A|G2||
w:But in val-ley and high-lands I will stay, I will stay

However it's the best part of 30 years since I last heard the song sung and that may be a trick of the memory.

Mick
