For UK 'catters only. I keep getting junk postal mail with the numeral '30312' next to my name and address. Not even the Post Office will help me with the origin of this - is it a database? Who owns it? How do I get off it? Any help gratefully accepted - thanks in advance.

According to the Weather Channel's website that zip code is in the Atlanta Georgia area.

The Post Office (or Consignia) should be able to help; these five digit codes are used by companies who use "Mailsort" for originating their 'Junk mail', also other firms will show the same code.
This is a method of sending post at a reduced postal rate by having it pre-sorted by computer.
Check the address on your bank statement or credit card statement, it will probably show the same. This is a national system, similar to the postcode.
At least, this is my understanding!

Nigel

Hi, Folks, (a) The junk mail is from simply anyone - the last one was Saga Holidays, usually it's from credit card people, offering yet another chance to be in debt. (b) Thanks a million for the help to all of you - I'm going to contact the Mailing Preference Society in the morning, see if I can get lucky, Cheers, Roger

It is not just junk mailers that use the walksort codes and they vary slightly in length I am 911254 some days but you lot can call me 9112. There are concessions for bulk mail sorted like this. Think utilities, think electoral roll, think bank statements.
thanks for the mail one. Apparently the phone one works on mobiles particularly for sms - according to the orange operator.

YOU have already won £500 - ring 0905 123456 calls cost..............
get this - from tel no +100!!
