If you have been reading part 1, you have gathered that I'm not doing that well right now. I am improving in health daily, still need dental work and still need to get some money coming in so that I can further afford treatments.

Today I had a talk with the owner of the house, who returned yesterday. She has an illness that started acting up while she was on holiday, and to make sure she gets enough oxygen, she is definitely going to need to have the skylight open, and the windows, etc, etc.

Of course, that is definitely NOT good for me, as it is now pollen season, and I am pretty badly allergic to certain of the trees and wild plants around here. Even with the air filter (I had lent it to my ex-bf and he jsut brought it back for me) I still react pretty badly.

However, she just happens to know of a folk remedy for hayfever, which she used to cure her own allergies several years ago... so I will be trying that out.

Even if it doesn't work, (and I have the feeling that it's at least going to help,) I will be off my current medication for a couple of weeks, which is a very good thing. My current medication (the only thing I had previously found that actually somewhat works) contains ephedra. I've been taking it for two years pretty intensively, and it can sometimes lead to heart problems in subsceptible (sp?) individuals. Considering the state of my teeth, I have to be pretty careful.

I had gotten the dosage of the medication down to twice a day during this winter - last winter I still had to take it every four hours - and went back up to the "normal" dose as soon as pollen season hit. So... looking forward to trying this folk remedy.

I will DEFINITELY let you guys know how it goes!

Hey, Hes...I sure hope the remedy works...it is no fun being bogged down by allergies....my aunt and mom have the same sort of problems....my aunt is constantly sick becuase of everything...and there tend to be alot of pollen in North Idaho where she lives...mom used to get sick...but she went through a program of allergy shots that seemed to help quite a bit...it helped her quite a bit....but then she has insurance...and so was able to do so...not sure if she is doing the shots anymore though...

I have asthma as well as ordinary hay fever. I found that with Singulair (nightly little square pill) I could go weeks without using my albuerteral inhaler. But right now, it's over $100 for a 30 day supply! But when the doctor first gave me the perscription, I got the first 30 days as a "Free sample"...

BTW, Breathe Easy Tea uses the herb Ephedra as a main ingrediant, as it has the compound pseudoephidrine. That might be helpful for you... probably something of a "lower dose" than you'd get with pharmeceuticals, and certainly a lot cheaper... Maybe that's the "folk remedy" your friend mentioned?

Anyone who says air is free doesn't have any allergies to medicate!

The folk remedy is a teaspoon each of unfiltered apple cider vinegar and local raw honey. Mix that with water and sip throughout the day, one a day, two if it's REALLY bad. Sort of apple-cider-vinegarade, I guess. Take it for three months without expecting results, and then it'll be starting to work.

Anyway, I'm just trying to get through spring pollen season with something that I know somewhat works, so I decided to start that remedy as soon as I get to Susan's rather than give up the allergy pills right now.

The housing situation isn't really good right now, the windows are open and the skylight too, and I am not doing very well, especially I am very tired. She can't have it any other way in her condition, and it is her house. So... I have to play by her rules, even if they make me sick, because otherwise she'll be sick... it's just one of those situations.

Looking for an alternative, and praying for rain in the meantime.

Will be going to PA as of June 6th, for sure.

Honey and honeycomb as well as vinegar are major ingredients in many folk remedies. They say chewing honeycomb will keep your nose clear. I don't know about vinegar and your nose but it is a mild diuretic...........So if the honey and vinegar both work, you'll find yourself running off at both ends. Take a box of Kleenex, sit on the john, and whizz and snort!

Hmmm... Sounds to me like the local honey is a homeopathic remedy -- it's the "local" that's the tip-off the honey would have traces of the local pollen in it, I presume, or would have the same protiens as the pollen that triggers your allergies, so I guess this would be nature's version of "allergy shots"

...though if you drink it, it has a different meaning to the word 'shot'.

When I was first diagnosed with asthma, we invested in an air filter machine and it helped greatly. The house I grew up in was big, and the only "air conditioning" in the summer was to open all the windows and run fans. But I ran the air filter in my bedroom and kept the door closed. And at least, that way, I could breath easier at night.

Could you do something like that, and have at least one room just for yourself?

Spaw - LOL! I definitely snorted just on reading that! (Thanks.)

CapriUni - Yep. Have an air cleaner running full blast. Except when I'm going out for groceries or whatever, when she comes into my room and turns it off, and opens the windows. I had a load of laundry hanging in my room instead of in the basement so that it wouldn't get full of pollen, and she did that. Then she accuses me of having no compassion for *her* health... uh-huh. Sure...

I can still smell it pretty strongly, and why it alternately makes me completely sleepy (I almost fell asleep crossing the road on the way home today,) and then completely AWAKE (usually at 3 AM even though really tired physically,) I really don't know. Haven't had good sleep lately.

But at least I have allergy pills again!

Anyway, speaking of sleep, I'm TIREDzzzz.

Jeez louise! Sounds like she doesn't take your allergies as seriously as she does her own...

Maybe only what she feels is real...

Did you have to wash your clothes again?

If you are a tenant, what is she doing coming into your room? Even if you are just sharing, what is she doing in your room anyway? I don't know about the US, but in the UK, it's illegal for landlords to enter tenanted rooms without a specific invite, particularly if the room is considered separate - i.e., having it's own lockable entrance. Do you go into her room uninvited? If not, she should extend the same courtesy to you.

Could you ask her politely not to enter the room whilst you aren't there, or find a way of locking it? If the doors are shut, what is the point of opening the window, particularly if she doesn't occupy the room at any time? If she was doing it to make your laundry dry quicker, then did she ask why it was there rather than the basement?

I may be a cynical old cow (alright, I AM a cynical old cow), but I have a sneaky suspicion that she is making your life uncomfortable in a bid to get you to leave sooner, rather than later. It's a ploy that has worked on me in the past in several situations, and is being used by my present manager to get me out of the department.

Try asking politely, discuss each other's allergies, you may find one or a cure in common. Once you have that common ground (heck, even the fact you both have allergies is common ground), maybe you can come to an amicable solution.

Take care, and remember we're here.

Well, since she "so generously" let me not pay rent this month, there's not much I can do. (And I have the feeling she did that on purpose, which of course, isn't generous at all... but she's unlikely to see that.)

I'd have left on the 13th if I had a place to go. It's that simple. I'm only staying because I have a dental appointment on June 4th, and I'm going to that because I have three temporary fillings that need to be dealt with BEFORE I go out of the country. Otherwise I'd be going to Susan's a lot sooner.

Apparently a friend called her and she agreed to make it easier on me while I remain here... however, there has been no action on that, and if the friend hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known about it.

So, it's just a contest of endurance right now.

I really do not know what I can do, I'm not paying rent, I have not enough money to go to a motel, I have no where else to go unless I miss the dental thing.

You know, some older people just get stuck in the authority position, and don't know how to turn it off, and if you try to relate to them as an equal, they just can't take it, they think you're challenging their authority when all you're saying is that you're a human being who has rights too.

How the heck do you deal with that?

If possible, you don't; the reason it makes sense to scramble hard for a while and haul yourself out of a dependent position is that you won't have to as much as possible. But it depends on how stuck they are, really -- a lot of people who run authority machines are real individuals right under the surface and are glad to communicate as such the minute you look behind the curtain!! :>)

Please pay attention to the little man behind the curtain!!

Hess, it might be possible for me to get the place ready sooner, but I am kinda decrepit too. But it sounds like the tooth thing is important enough to stay there for, for now. Can you get that appointment sooner and leave sooner, and I'll get going as fast as I can?

In the meantime... don't spend a lot of time at home. Hang out in libraries where they have a good air system, and so forth....

And a word to folks encouraging Hess to protect her rights about this, with the landlady... I have a feeling she needs her strength to make this change, more than she needs to win one right now-- even though she is clearly right.

Change can come in all manner of forms. And if someone doesn't make a stand, then some people never change.

I was recently given a chance to move out of a section where I'm getting a great deal of grief from a manager. He arranged for me to move out of the section, for his benefit, rather than mine. I chose not to go because it would mean that a) he won, and b) there would be no-one left in the department willing to stay and challenge his unreasonable and unacceptable behaviour. My staying has made him rethink the way he behaves to me and the team (he's also got wind of the grievance the team is planning to take out on him on top of the individual one I'm bringing against him), and he's started to behave differently. We haven't done anything wrong, or yet official, but he's already started to act differently. If Hesp sticks up for her rights, then the change may be a whole heap easier for both her and her landlady.

Thanks, folks!

A friend found me friends to stay with in London (I'm in ENGLAND!!! Just kidding. Still in Ontario. *g*)

At the most basic, this problem was only the clash of one need against another, and that was not solvable. There were other things, on both sides of course. (I may joke that I am an angel, but be assured I know what I'm like!) So I think it is better to just leave in this case, it gives us BOTH peace of mind. I hope she will find other people to help her while she isn't feeling that well.

Anyway, one of the friends I ended up staying with is a musician!!! And she loves computers too. And I can do some computer maintenance stuff to help out here, and I brought some food and got my stuff, so everything is ok.

Susan - Would it be ok to come on June 5th? Also, I cannot bring the bed, it won't fit in the car anyway. Unless I don't bring Martin... (Since he's driving, that would be kinda funny to try.) *g*

There's a cat here, but I don't get an anaphylactic reaction for cats. And there's some acupressure stuff that can keep it pretty minor. So I'm not worrying.

So, I'm ok, I've had a chance to think things over, and my natural sunny nature is asserting itself again.

Come ahead full steam, sweetie. Since you are cookieless I will ask you, here, what I asked you in the PM-- do I hang curtains and so forth, or wait for you to decorate it how you want?

Have desk and bookshelf you can lug up there and assemble. Hardi will help. We'll toss a bed up there. We have various other furnishings you might want up there, once you arrive and see what you need.

I am tempted to just paint or polyurethane the floor to knock the dust down. Any kinds that are toxic for you, or shall I wait and see what you think when here?

Also keep in mind that Hardi's room at the church is still there-- if things are not just right the day you arrive, you can set up over there while it's being worked out and while your air cleaner is working on the space.

Okiebokie?

GREAT news about the cat thing.

Tree pollen-- being south of you, our trees are fully leafed out now and the flowering trees seem to have quit flowering. Does that mean we are done with pollen season on the trees?

Ragweed-- winds here are from the west, and to the west is mostly mowed hay and corn being planted. (Corn pollen???) You will have a west-facing window, but you can weather strip it if its new caulking has shrunk.

Anything else from last year you want me to address before you arrive?

~Susan

Someone above mentioned about landlords not being able to go into rooms and as a landlord I can tell you that a roommate with a separate room is treated the same way a tenant in a separate apartment is treated. That is, in California, I cannot enter the room of my tenant without 24 hour notice unless it is an emergency (overflowing toilet, leaking gas, etc.). Tenants have rights.

Right on Hes. Let us know how you are doing. Glad you are getting the teeth fixed. It will totally make you feel better. Amy

Same in New York about the landlord. Hes: it sounds like things are looking up. I have found with the apple cider vinegar/honey remedy that even store bought honey will work. there isn't a reason to stint on using it either or dosage except for taste. I usually use two teaspoon or a table spoon of vinagar about the same of honey and hot water drinking it as if it was tea and as much as is needed for cold sinus etc. I can't comment on allergy but it is the cat's meow for cold and sinus. Do be a dear and get better! and good luck in your new place. Neil

I hope there wasn't too much ill feeling with the landlady when you left? Maybe she just doesn't realise that she's not supposed to act that way as a landlady. If she really does have all those problems, maybe she should rethink letting.

Hess is going to need a small window-size air conditioner in there so she can leave the window shut in the summer, and altho it is well insulated up there it is right under the roof. Our money is tight, so contributions toward this (PM me) would be welcome.

Hess coming has spurred me on to a whole new way of thinking-- she has repeatedly insisted we have things (work) for her to do-- says it's not just for "rent" but that she needs it to keep her getting WELL. So naturally I thought of her helping us with MUSIC stuff, and there is a LOT that needs doing in that department.... getting our band out in the public eye, organizing materials, drawing up songsheets, and so forth..... all stuff she can do at her own speed. So she can be help us learn how to have an intern! Yeah! When she leaves I'm recruiting someone else to occupy the space, to help--- and with a local college, and kids not always liking to go home to Mom and Dad for the summer..... music majors all over campus..... hmm, maybe Hess will help find her replacement when she's ready to move on.... not too soon I hope.....

So really, Hess is helping us far more than we are helping her!

Thanks, hesperis!

I love it when a rant, fully encouraged, turns into great solutions and a celebration!

Amy - The situation was a little more complicated than a landlady-tenant thing. So it was best to just get out, now we're all happy.

Neil - cool. yeah, my ragweed thing isn't even the classic hayfever, it just goes straight to the lungs and makes me *tired*. I get hayfever with the cat thing, that's much better now my friend did Reiki and acupressure on me.

Bob - Good!

Jande - thankies! *Big hug!* Glad you've got work, eh?

Liz - health is better now that my friend did the Reiki and acupressure thing, and the pollen is only really bad in late afternoon-evening. So I get kinda sleepy then, but that's it. As for ill feeling, I have none, and she says she has none, so we'll just leave it at that.

I'm really going to miss the people I'm staying with now, when I leave.

Susan - AWWWWWWWW! *HUG* Thanks. I can *definitely* do computer stuff and music stuff, I'll just throw it in with the stuff I'm already doing, hehe.

Speaking of which, would you (or Jande) happen to have a good mic? Hawk wants his back. He'll be ok with lending it to me for the next few months, but if there is a good mic there that I could use, then I can leave his for him here. (It would be less messy to get it back to him now than later, for sure.) I'd like to finish recording that CD since it's about a third done. *Big grin*

Yes, but what kind of soap can I use on the wood floor to pick up a bit more plaster dust? Maybe just damp mop it so we can still paint if we want? It's kind of unnerving not knowing every last thing that is NOT OK, to see what IS OK.... so I am just on hold waiting for you mostly.

Like, do I even put the bed up there now or do I wait for you to run the air cleaner for a day or two first? Do I air it out (I haven't) or leave the window shut as it has been for the months since it was painted?

So.... just get here and we will figure it out, or tell me now anything I can work on....

~Susan

Sooz - Wash stuff now and it ought to be fine when I get there. Put the bed up, wash the pillow, if it's catless for day or two that'll help. The air cleaner may take a couple of days to get it totally ok, but I'm not going to die from a little discomfort. (The discomfort is why we're coming on the 5th instead of the 6th. *g*) Thanks for wanting to make me comfy, though!

Spaw - yepper!

How? *Try Max's Personal Messages!*

Hess, nyah nyah, no pillow washing-- it's brand new! *G* And the room in question is catless, catless, catless. Can I open the window then?

Good God, it's June 3rd already! :)

The big move is in two days.

Hes... No mics to spare, sorry.

Susan... I'm over fifty. Too old to be *kid*napped.

Making good progress up there on your space, Hess.

DETAILS:
Our daughter Monica is in town and she's coming over tomorrow to help me haul the bed up there. Rugs will go on sale next week probably and then it will get really nice. (We are also getting ourselves a new bed; when we do, yours will improve with a box spring under the mattress! *G*)

I'm running the linens through the wash one time more to eliminate any stray cat hairs or laundry additives, tonight.

I found an unused lamp, a chair, a nightstand, and a bookshelf lying around, and I think we will nab you a 6' table from the church (for a desk). Curtains go up tomorrow, too. You can decide how you want it all arranged when you get here! We have set aside an area downstairs for your stuff to go when you get here, so you can take your time over the succeeding days moving it upstairs.

If you can nab an outlet strip and heavy extension cord easily, up there, do it-- so you can spread electric stuff around. There are only two outlets up there.

We need to go grocery shopping when you get here-- so you can guide us on what to get. *G* Are you still a hot-dog-chomping vegan? *G* Maybe we will grill dogs to celebrate your arrival. Is that with or without cheese and chili and onions, ma'am? *G*

Alas, I have not gotten the sitting pool set up yet. :~( It just needs more bodies working on it at once... I am recruiting the neighbor next. *G* But it will warm up quickly once set up and it's good for horizontal aquasize. (Did I mention Hills Creek Lake a few miles away as well? It has a sand beach and clear swimming area.)

Hardi will run the vacuum over the downstairs Wednesday afternoon and I may even dust! (We are down to just one housecat.)

You may instruct us on the rest when you arrive. *G*

Call collect from the road, if needed.

~Susan

Yes, thanks, it's wood, but so many layers of stuff ground in, if I mop it will just turn mud. I think leaving the patina of grund-in character will do better, after a good industrial dustmopping... and then if Hess wants to paint it she can (oil-base Kilz), and if not we will toss a rug on it.

Hess, I won't be online much tonight, tomorrow... leave word here if anything important, or call collect if you need to, but I won't be near the phone much either.

It's raining nicely so I opened the window to air the room a bit.
