Subject: Some say the Devil is Dead From: GUEST,Geraldine Mc Govern Date: 16 May 02 - 06:51 AM Dear Sir/Madam I was wondering could you help me - I play in a band & I was wondering is there any way you could provide me with the NOTES(like for a tin whistle) for "Some say the Devil is Dead" by the Wolfe Tones and "The Lonesome Boatman" by the Furey. This would mean so much to me - I would really. really appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Geraldine Mc Govern mcgovern.ger@itsligo.ie Computer Technician. Sligo RTC - Ireland. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Some say the Devil is Dead From: An Pluiméir Ceolmhar Date: 16 May 02 - 07:22 AM Be warned, Geraldine, I started just like you with a polite request and now I'm a Mudcat junkie. The best source of tunes on line is probably http://www.ceolas.org/tunes/#pdf It's more a meta-site than a single site, but you could try rummaging around there. Some collections are in stave notation, some in ABC and some of the latter can be played with appropriate software. You'll get the background to the words of "some say..." on this annex to Mudcat http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/pages/tiDEILDEID.html Unfortunately the tune isn't given there, but it's almost the same tune as "Maid will you marry me", so if you can't find it under one name you might get it under the other.

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Some say the Devil is Dead From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 16 May 02 - 08:15 AM JC's Tunefinder is probably the best online resource for such things. Though primarily a search facility for locating tunes in abc format, once found these can be displayed as staff notation in several graphic formats, or played as midi. You can find both these tunes there, though you'll get more results for the first if you search just for some say the devil, as the title varies. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Some say the Devil is Dead From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 16 May 02 - 04:10 PM Other variations of the title are Johnny Will You Marry Me, and De Danann did it as Love Will You Marry Me. Their brilliant (?)second album (which dates back to the 70s, had Tim Lyons on it, and was called something like Selected Jigs & Reels) contains a great version of this tune. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Some say the Devil is Dead From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 16 May 02 - 05:20 PM Nic's rendition on Unearthed (guitar solo, no voice) is BRILLIANT. Also lend ye an ear to his Plains Of Boyle on the same album, another stunning instrumental. (No, I'm not getting a commission!) |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Some say the Devil is Dead From: GUEST,Marion Date: 17 May 02 - 04:04 PM You could also search for a strathspey (Sottish, I think) called Braes of Marr. It has three parts, the first and third being very similar to the sung melody of The Devil Is Dead. Maybe you could play the strathspey as a whistle solo before or after the singer does their part.
