This is supposedly a true story of when David Campbell discovered that the lady he was engaged to was earning her living as a prostitute.

I just noticed you mentioned Newbury in your post. If it was at Newbury Folk Club you heard this song it may well have been by a guy called Terry Munday and myself. We visited Newbury on a couple of occasions during the late '60's and this song was part of our gig-list.

This song was also popular in Australia's Northern folk scene in the 80's - e.g. Top End Folk Club in Darwin, sung by the group, Tropical Ear and in Mt Isa, sung by Chris Buck, I think ...

I do remember Terry Munday; I used to sit at the door and take the entrance money at Newbury Folk Club around 1969- ah, but those were the days! I recently found an old LP record in a charity shop by the Guyanan author, David Campbell.
"Hello!" I thought, "This bloke looks like a folkie!!"
So I paid my dollar and gave it a new home - but it doesn't have "Slightly Faded" on it, I'm sorry to say!!

It was a great favourite of mine when it was sung by Doug Porter in the Mid Seventies on his many Forces tours in Germany. Anyone remember Doug. The last time I heard he was seriously ill.

Hi! Guest John - I know that scenario well!!!

My lucky find David Campbell LP is on Astor - GGS 921 - from Transatlantic Records Ltd - and is self-titled, is his first, from 1966, recorded in London - Martin Carthy on guitar and Jack Fallon on bass, as well.

Thanks Harvey. He (and you) were big influences in my early days. I was just finding out about all the different kinds of music and humour going on in the Folk scene and was very priveleged out at RAF Bruggen to meet great entertainers from all walks of folk. As you can see from Jim's post I never got David's birthplace right.
People used to tell me he had a chip on his shoulder and was sullen. I never saw that side of him and whenever we met he just used to laugh as he knew I would screw up the intro.
Mind you not too long ago it was my pleasure to introduce to a folk club audience a lady who in the not to distant past was a feller. So I did all the blurb and said welcome "ladies name" give HIM a big hand.
The said artist just winked, laughed and proceeded to entertain us brilliantly.

She says her frend heard it from Jackie & Bridie as above, but having looked at the many refs on web for D. Campbell- seems a fascinating individual.

Amazing what you can find when you do a search!

A couple of weeks ago I tracked down, online, two members of a late-1960s trio called The Lonesome Travellers, Graham Cooper and Steve Rostron (and yes, the third member was the late Doug Porter).

In 1971 a College friend had their LP, which had "Slightly Faded" on it, plus beautiful versions of Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain" and "Canadian Railroad Trilogy", and the story of a Crimean War hero, "The Ballad of William Coffey VC". I'd copied the LP (via speaker & mic) to reel-to-reel, and from that (via speaker & mic) to cassette, and the 30+ year-old cassette of incredibly muddy music is now disintegrating. Through the kindness of Graham and Steve I may get a replacement before long.

If David Campbell is still around anywhere, could someone thank him from me for writing a hauntingly beautiful song. And thankyou, Kernow John, for giving the lyrics here.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of David Campbell? His 'Slightly Faded' lyrics, first heard sung by 'The Pennine Folk' at the 'Bush' in Hyde, Cheshire around 1967 remains poplar today.
I was one of a rare breed who dared to ignore 'Jenks' at the MSG when booking David to perform at my club - Staley Folfolkclub in Millbrook Stalybridge.David stayed with our family for 3nights and spurred our son Mike in his early attempts at playing guitar.
We've lost touch with David and would be very interested in what he's doing in this 21st century.

I remember seeing David Campbell at The Lamb(?) Folk Club in Liverpool 30 odd years ago. I was mightily impressed! He sang some great songs beautifully, and was a great communicator - Talk about having the audience eating out of the palm of your hand! I often wondered where he disappeared to.

Gosh, a name I haven't heard (well not in relation to that particular DC) for many years, probably about 1971/2. I used to sing "It's Only Morning" from his 2nd UK Transatlantic album. Can't quite recall all the lyrics now but have started to dig through the brain cells!

I remember doug porter and CGraham Cooper being in a midland band which may have been Group four.. ( harvey may remember this as it was jus before he teamed up with Graham)They also so sang hte song about Witchcraaft in Ancater ( somebody's last ride) I've eben trying ot put hte lyrics to SLIGHTLY fADED down for quite a while and I'm pleased other people remember it. I remember seeing Doug/Graham et al at Moor Farm Notts and at the Watnall folk club (early 70s) Both clubs run by hte late David Brindley who had a great repetoire including Lazlo Fayre ( A song I would dearly love to reproduce) so if you have any hints on hte lyricss I'm interested

I have a copy of the lonesome travellers album with slightly faded on it and it's got fairytale lullaby as well which is another cracking cover version by them.

I have fond memories of Doug as whenever he came over to Germany he always came to stay with us. My dad was great mates with Doug and Graham Cooper. My dad Brian used to perform on the folk scene in Germany as he was in the Army based over there.

I went to see Doug shortly before he died and he had his health problems but he was still Doug, He couldn't wait to show me his recording studio and he was still focused on his music it was fantastic to see him.

I believe Graham is living in Spain now.

I remember Doug... and Graham and Steve too. I used to go and see The Lonesome Travellers every Sunday night at the Pennine in Derby. Really happy, inspiring, warm and friendly evenings, with lots of amazing guest artists. Many years later I even went on a date once with Doug! The whole of the Last Tramride is a fabulous album, I still listen to it quite often now... I think it mentions on the sleeve notes where they got the song from. I have a vague feeling too that Doug did another version of Slightly Faded on one of his solo albums, but I'll only have a cassette of that somewhere.

If there was a way of putting an MP3 of them on the net legally, so as to ensure any fees due were paid; I would be happy to do so. I got the impression from Dave when he was at Sussex University folk club that he had vowed never to record "Slightly Faded" so it was great to be reminded of his great voice singing it on you tube - I don't suppose that it is available to down load for a fee somewhere?
The same goes for "The First Tramride" by The Lonesome Travellers - Sad to hear Doug has died - he was signing himself "Dougal" when they visited Keenfolk back in the early seventies (Booked as I recall, through the folk artist agent called Jasper Carrot

Tony, I was at Bruggen at the same time as you -Mac was compere at the Borderers and I also recorded Doug once. I think it was the night we were all recorded for the radio (BFBS) Of course I’ve lost my recording overthe years and the reel to reel that played it. Do you remember any of the other members? Do you have contact with any of them? Mike Walker (I was known as Mick at the time. Bythe way does anyone know which model of Martin guitar Doug was playing at that time - it wa a beautiful sounding instrument
