After forty years of singing, playing and listning to folk music I thought I had heard it all and then a group of kids (average age about twenty)come along with a very exciting sound and show us oldies how it can be done.
I am refering to "The Pack". Never heard of them ??? Then you have missed an experience of a lifetime. But fear not you can now hear them on their new CD "Twelve Little Devils".
The Pack are;
Sam Pirt - accordian
Ian Stephenson - guitar
Joey Oliver - whistle & oboe
Lucy Nelson - claranet, whistle & bodrhan
Mi-ul Jary - concertina
Bella Hardy - fiddle
Sophy Ball - fiddle
Matt Nelson - saxophone
Emma Hardy - fiddle & viola
Talie Edwards - fiddle
Chantel Noppen - trumpet & concertina
Emeily Ball - fiddle
They all got together a few years ago when they were attending the Folkworks Summer School but since then they have played at nemerous festivals and concerts throughout the UK.

The 12track CD features tunes from America, Canada, Denmark, England, Scotland, Ireland, Sweden and even Turkey and all of them are played with the feeling and perfection which can only come from a group of truely dedicated and talented musicians.
It is very difficult to pick out any favourites as every track is excelent but I have to admit "The Devil Came Down To Yorkshire" is totaly unexpected as it combines humour with excelent musicanship. Then there are the two waltzes "Midnight On The Water" and Margaret's Waltz, and of course "Hommage" and ---- But I could go on about it all day.
I was listning to it with my eighteen month old grandaughter who was supposed to be having her afternoon nap, after every track her eyes opened and from her limited vocabulary came one word "Again". So take it from me and my grandaughter if you want a musical treat don't fail to get a copy of "Twelve Little Devils".
You can probably get one by sending a PM to Sam Pirt and I'm sure Camsco will be intending to aquire a few for U.S. sales.
If you are searching through festival CD sales racks look out for an orange cover with a black dancing devil but no words. The title is only on the edge of the cover.
Cheers Bill

Although I haven't heard the CD, your comments come as no surprise Bill. Having followed the progress of this group over a number of years, their music has proved an uplifting experience to an "old folkie".

These are the young people who will carry on the tradition and Folk Music is safe in their hands .....

Does this band 'replace' 422, or is it in addition?

NO 'The Pack' does not replace nor 'add on' to 422 in any shape or form what so ever and it never has done. Thats why they are called The Pack and not 422 if you get my drift. No replacement or addition here just two very different bands, you will know what I mean if you see The Pack & 422 live (or listen to the CD's from each group)

I know because I am in BOTH bands!!!

Just wanted to clear that up before people begun to wonder.

Continue listening and enjoy the music, maybe see you at some festivals.

Cheers, Sam

I'll endorse what others have already said - this is a stunning CD. We already knew how frighteningly talented Sam is, and although the other names aren't familiar to me, they are all superb musicians.

I bought the CD from Sam last weekend and can confirm what has been said by others above.

This is a truly excellent CD full of wonderful musicianship and bursting with youthful exhuberance. As Bill said, these 12 are all around about 20 years old and, if anyone suggested the folk tradition isn't being carried forward in the best possible way by young people today, they ought to get a copy of this little gem.

All the best,

mooman

My copy keeps disappearing into #2 daughter's CD player: she plays along to it as much as she can. Found it in the CD-Rom drive the other day after she'd been working on the computer, and it's 6 months since we first got it!
