Here is a new set of original lyrics for an old traditional waltz. I'd be thrilled if they could be added to the Digital Traditions collection!

The Man in the Moon

When I was a baby my Mother would say
"Sleep gently, my Darling. Goodnight and sleep tight.
Just gaze out the window, look far far away
For the old man that smiles so bright, every night."

Chorus
"The Moon, the Moon, the Man in the Moon
His watch will be keeping while you lie here sleeping."
"Sweet dreams" she would whisper, "He'll be here tonight
To shine on you gently until morning's light."

When I was a child she'd still kiss me goodnight
Long after I'd fallen asleep in my bed
She'd look down upon me in glimmering light
To a baby no longer, these words she still said.

Chorus

One day I grew older and she went away
My memories have faded, the years they have flown
Still I fondly remember the words she did say
Now I have a child of my own, very own.

Chorus
"The Moon, the Moon, the Man in the Moon
His watch will be keeping while you lie here sleeping."
"Sweet dreams" I now whisper, "He'll be here tonight
To shine on you gently until morning's light."

These lyrics are placed into the Public Domain. Barry Taylor, May 2002.

Good one, Barry!

Um ... I've also just revived a 1999 thread of the same name, requesting lyrics to the SPURLOCK song of the same name, that Marilyn Middleton Pollack sang ... does anyone know this one?!
Cheeky Cheers!! R-J

Mother Goose rhymes:

The Man in the Moon
Looked out of the moon
,Looked oot of the moon and said:
"It''s time for all children on Earth
To think about going to bed."

And, for the grown-ups:

The Man in the Moon drinks claret,
But he is a dull Jack-a-Dandy.
If he knew a sheep's head from a carrot,
He would learn to drink cider and brandy.

(In Sept. of '00, MMario posted a 17th century round on this aspect of the Ol' Man's life in this thread: Tune Add: Catches=Longer Rounds)
