After a discussion with my friend Deirbhile from Galway, who speaks Irish, it would seem that the English version is not a translation, although the mood is similar. Does anyone have any idea where Andy M. Stewart would have his lyrics?

From "So Many Partings" sleeve notes :

"This beautiful Irish song was given to us by Ruth Morgan of Essex. It is basically her collation of several versions, translated from the Irish Gaelic, which we have slightly adapted"

Thanks a million. Getting closer. Now of course, the magic and curse of the mudcat is to find out more about this Ruth Morgan. The road goes ever on...
