Thank You Tom Jim Dixon For helping you out with the lyrics.
I have recorded a whole Album `` Songs Of Kilkenny `` for Owl Records, The Counties of Ireland Series.
I am sure that its very rare.
You Might Find it on Cassette Tape.
As Far as I can Remember There are other great Kilkenny songs on there.
Eg. The Cats Of Kilkenny
The Louse House In Kilkenny.
Etc.

Happy Hunting.
If you find a copy ley me Know.
I dont even have it myself.

Yours Sincerly

Tom Donovan

Ha! At least I was right about the sports anthem, all those years ago.

A few notes that might help:

"Sliotar" (pronounced roughtl "shlitter" is the ball used in "hurling" where it is struck very hard with an ash stick in a game like a cross between ice hockey and aerial combat!

"cumann" is a mishearing of "camán", the Gaelic word for said ash-stick. Pronounced roughty "com - awn" - though I suspect that may not scan properly!

Black and amber are the Kilkenny team colours.

Denizens of Kilkenny are known as "the Kilkenny Cats" for reasons which escape me!

Galway, Tipperary and Wexford are other counties where the tradition of hurling is very strong.

Regards

Subject: Lyr Add: KILKENNY'S THE BEST OF THEM ALL (Keating)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 10 Apr 05 - 07:36 PM

Copied from http://www.owlrecords.com/l40ir.htm

KILKENNY'S THE BEST OF THEM ALL
(Reg Keating)

Great hurlers are born on the banks of the Nore.
With cumann and sloitre, they're raised by the score.
Now lift up your glasses. Let's hear the great roar:
Kilkenny's the best of them all.
Now lift up your glasses. Let's hear the great roar:
Kilkenny's the best of them all.

CHORUS: I give you the amber that's ribboned with black.
March onwards to glory and never look back.
The bigger they come, the harder they fall.
Kilkenny's the best of them all.
The bigger they come, the harder they fall.
Kilkenny's the best of them all.

Now Cork, she had hurlers of whom they could sing:
The bold Thady Quill and the bold Christy Ring.
Those days, they are gone, now this tale has a sting.
Kilkenny's the best of them all.
Those days, they are gone, now this tale has a sting.
Kilkenny's the best of them all.

Now Galway has come to the gates of Croke Park.
From Connacht they travel from dawn until dark.
They've no use in rising along with the lark.
Kilkenny's the best of them all.
They've no use in rising along with the lark.
Kilkenny's the best of them all. CHORUS

Hats off to bold Wexford, for once she was great,
But now she is feeble and much more sedate.
For Wexford's last glory was in '98.
Kilkenny's the best of them all.
For Wexford's last glory was in '98.
Kilkenny's the best of them all.

Tipperary has pastures. Her mountains and streams
Have beauty and splendour that's much like a dream,
But cats from Kilkenny have stolen her cream.
Kilkenny's the best of them all.
But cats from Kilkenny have stolen her cream.
Kilkenny's the best of them all. CHORUS

[Recorded by Tom Donovan on "40 Irish Pub Songs," "Celts: A Compendium of Celtic Music," and "101 Songs & Ballads from Ireland."]

Hi, René - in the US, "giving somebody the third degree" means to subject a prisoner to harsh, grueling, and threatening treatment in order to force a confession or extract information. I have no idea how the phrase came into use.

Hi guys!

We have a nice weather here in Moscow so I'm in the good mood today. :-)

Martin, me dear friend, ( :-) ) about 3d degree, 'twas a kinda joke (maybe not the best one :-( ), so nevermind, mean "forget and forgive" 8-)

steve t listen steve, I don't mean to look like kinda smart a** here, but have you ever been to "4000Folksong" site? It's jis' greatEST songs and lyrics database (would those Mudcaters forgive me). :-) So I would strongly recommend you to have a look there.

And thanX to all again !!!

Cheers Largo P.S. But please, DO NOT forget the reason why I'm here: I'm still lookin' for the lyrics. :-(

Largo: Yeah, it always surprises me here -- there's so often someone here who knows the lyrics to something I think is utterly obscure and then when I ask for something that I thought wasn't obscure at all, like Dear Matilda, nobody seems to recognize the piece at all. However, I think you can trust that if one of the wisened wizards here knew the lyrics, they would have posted 'em.

Largo

Sorry if it sounded like the third degree. It's the song I'm curious about - not you! Its a question of deciding where to look - given that I've never heard the thing!

Anyway, here's a verse on Irish placenames, for nothing:

"They say that Naas is a terrible place, Kilcock is just as bad But of all the places I've ever been - Bejazus, Kinnegad!"

Cheers

Hi Martin!

Now step by step.

>Recordings I've heard it on "101 Irish songs" popurri (poppurri ?) collection disc. It was sung by Tom (?!) Donnovan (??!!) or Don (?!) Donnaghue (??!!) or Dunkin (?!) Doughnuts (??!!) :-) To be frankly I can't remember now and can't check it up today, maybe tommorow

>Age Mine? 25 :-) Ah, song's .. well it sounds rather fresh, of course not like Mynthon, but close... eh-h.. to be serious - ni puta idea - ain't got no any idea. But as I can remember, a "Battle of smth (?)" or "Great horours of smth (?)" are mentioned in the song. Maybe it could help

>Where heard? 3d degree? At home, Marti, at my sweet home.... :-)

>..sports? Yeah, why not? There was a time when cutting heads off was jis' kinda sports, so ... Let it be sports...

MY THOUGHTS: The main problem is that I didn't heard the whole song, I've heard just a part of it (I 've wrote - it was poppurri disc) so the artist murmured about 4 strings and then the another song (piece of song) began.

Anyway, thank you for your Cooperation.

Cheers, Largo

Chorus: Now lift up your glasses and hear the great roar; " Kilkenny's the best of them all !"

and

Chorus: Should th bigger day come or should the harder day fall, Kilkenny's the best of them all

Thank you, Cheers Largo
