'S ambo éara
(leagan/version ag Máire Áine Ni Dhonnchadha)

'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara
Gabh siar is gabh aniar 'us faigh d(h)omsa céile
'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara

'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara
Máirtín Ó Lopáin do dhóthain de chéile
'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara

... Ní bhainfidh bun m'iongan ná barra mo mhéar leis ...

'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara
Gabh siar is gabh aniar 'us faigh d(h)omsa céile
'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara

...Pádraig Pheaits Mhurchú do dhóthain de chéile...

...'Shean-léintoigín scartha ar sceacha na hÉireann ...

'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara
Gabh siar is gabh aniar 'us faigh d(h)omsa céile
'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara

...Tomáisín Chite bheas a'msa mar chéile ...

...Fuip óir ina lámh 's é in a mháistir ar Éirinn

'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara

Go East, go West, find a mate for me
'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara

'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara
Máirtín Ó Lopáin: fit mate for you
'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara

'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara
I wouldn't touch him with finger or finger-nail
'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara

'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara
Gabh siar is gabh aniar 'us faigh d(h)omsa céile
'S ambo éara bhuileabó éara

...Pádraig Pheaits Mhurchú: fit mate for you...

...Him with his old shirt stretched in every bush...

(chorus...)

...Tomáisín Chite is the man for me...

...Gold whip in his hand: he's master of all Ireland.

Seán Ó Baoill: "Here is the fun and laughter of a spinning session in an old-time Connacht home. As the wheels spin the girls suggest unlikely matches for each other in extempore verse. The rhythm of this occupational song is that of a jig. This is the last song that Máire Áine learned from her mother."

'S Umbó Aerá
(leagan/version ag Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin)

1
'S umbó aerá ó uilleabó aerá,
Gabh siar is gabh aniar 'us faigh domsa céile
'S umbó aerá ó uilleabó aerá

2
'S umbó aerá ó uilleabó aerá
ó shiúil mé an choill le héirí na gréine
'S umbó aerá ó uilleabó aerá
v

3
'S umbó aerá ó uilleabó aerá

ó seo é mo stór a' teacht thar a' tsléibhe
'S umbó aerá ó uilleabó aerá
v

4
'S umbó aerá ó uilleabó aerá,
Gabh siar is gabh aniar 'us faigh domsa céile
'S umbó aerá ó uilleabó aerá
v

then repeat #2,3 & 4

1 - 'S umbó aerá ó uilleabó aerá,
Go East, go West, find a mate for me…
2 - …I walked in the wood as the sun was rising…
3 … Here is my love coming over the mountain…

You can mix and match verse from these two versions and you can add in names/characteristics of prospective partners YOU know. This song has similarities with the Scottish waulking songs.

Although the two singers recorded different lines, Pádraigín says she learned the song from Máire Áine. Pádraigín describes this song as "A summer carol, it is one of the oldest song-types in the tradition.". She cites other versions "Sal-ú-nú aer-í" and "Maileo-Nero".

The same song as published Mícheál Ó hEidhin,ed "Cas Amhrán", Cló Chois Fharraige - first edition, 1975:

'S umbó aera uilleabó aera, Gabh siar is gabh niar 'us faigh domsa céile 'S umbó aera uilleabó aera.

'S umbó aera uilleabó aera, Máirtín Ó Lopáin a ghabhfainn mar chéile 'S umbó aera uilleabó aera.

... Ní bhfainfinn bun longan ná barra mo mhéar leis!..

...Gabh siar is gabh 'niar 'us faigh domsa céile...

...Tomás Sheáin Bhid a ghabhainn mar chéile ...

If I am reading correctly the pages sent my by Philippa - George Petrie in 'ancient Music of Ireland' presents a tune (page 84) which may be a variant of 'S ambo eara.

Listed as "maileó léró, ís imbó néró" - on page 84 is noted: "And I should observe that the air is also known, in clare, by the name of Lura, Lura, no da Lura
