Well, I recently acquired a T. HARUO 6 string large bodied guitar. I bought it with the idea of possibly selling it, but after reading all these posts and other info on HARUO guitars, and playing it, I really want to hold on to it. I also had a friend play it who is more hip to guitars and he felt it had a better voice, better action and fretted better (especially high up on the neck) than most Martins. Wow, bless Terry Haruo wherever he may be. Looks like these axes could become the holey grail for the people lucky enough to have experience one. I would really look forward to anyone else telling of there experience with one.
It is a thrill (cheap thrill, that is) (: or is it :)

I started this thread with the following post. I still don't know very much about them but you are right about these guitars being well worth the money. I know there are Martin devotees who will not agree but my 12 outplays anything I've tried with the M-word on it.

***************************************************************
May 25, 2002

Well, I've been a bad boy. I made an early trip to the dump this morning and stopped at a yard sale. In the garage I found a T. Haruo 12 String guitar for $70. The neck seems nice and straight, the action seems good and when I played it hard (as hard as I ever play) I heard no buzzing of strings. I saw no cracks in the body.

The label inside has the maker's name, T. Haruo, and a serial number and the model number, T-20-12. there are 20 frets and between the 19th and the 20th is a mother of pearl inlay with T. HARUO engraved on it.

So I bought it.

Now I'd like to know something about the guitar. My internet search located two old bulleting board messages one of which indicated the T. Haruo used to work for Yamaha but left to build guitars on his own. The guitars mentioned in the messages were both purchased in the 70's.

The family I bought the guitar from is apparently a Navy family. I believe they might have purchased the guitar while in Japan.

So, what do we know about this?

I loved my Haruo T10-12. It's a fine instrument. But I have something else that I now love better: a National 12-string steel-bodied Delphi. It better suits the music I play.

So my Haruo, in fine condition with case, is for sale. I can get pics, sound bites, etc, if any one is interested.

I've got no idea what to ask for it.

I suggest you post this as a separate thread. There are enough people in Maine who wanted my 12 that you might get some interest there. What country are you in? What part of that country? I wish I lived close enough.

As for price go see a luthier. He or she might be able to advise you.

I live in East Tennessee, about 50 miles east of Knoxville, in Morristown, TN, with two guitars and two cats, but only the Haruo model 10-12 is for sale. If I put it on Ebay, no one will know what it is, and it won't bring what I truly know it is worth.

As I said before, can get pics and sound bites.

Thanks,

Britt

How completely interesting! My dad bought me a T. Harou 12-string back in 1978/9 from Sam Ash in NY...I have in my head that he paid about $800 for it, but I was only a little kid, so I could remember wrong. It seems like an awful lot of $$ for him to shell out, but at the time it made sense that he would spend the $$, and I remember him taking some "famous" local musician with him to get just the right guitar for me for Xmas.

Anyway, this guitar came up this weekend as my husband and I were housecleaning. It's been sitting in its case for YEARS and only played on occasion by a friend who loves guitars. Other than 1 broken string (which happened very recently), it's in great condition.

I haven't played for years, and it seems like such a waste for it to just sit there, but emotionally I'm torn with the idea of selling it....but we could use the space in our little condo (I'm in California now)....

Let me tell you my story...

My dad bought this guitar for my mom in the early 70's. She learned to play on it, as well as myself when I was young, and my younger brother as well. It was an amazing guitar, that I could never quite match with other purchases.

My mother finally about a year ago gave the guitar to my younger brother (I'm 28, he was 20) and he learned to play on it. Carried that damn thing around with him wherever he went.

Then a turn of fate, on Feb 28 08' my brother was murdered in cold blood at my mother house. Stabbed to death with a girl friend of his. http://www.khq.com/Global/story.asp?S=7938791&nav=menu438_8_6

The guitar was taken by the police, and my mother and family members can't recall what T-model it was. The guitar was found laying a few inches from his body (he probably had it on him when he was attacked) and it was covered in blood. They took it into evidence, and said we can't have it back for a year.

I asked the detectives if the guitar was damaged in the attack, and he said no, it looked perfectly fine, minus the mass amounts of blood on it.

If I only do one thing right in this world, it will be restoring that guitar to the best of my abilities... Does anyone have the name / company info of a place that I can send this guitar to, that will restore it as well as they can? Money isn't an issue considering the guitars history, and its importance to my brother and our family...

Oh, and btw, this T.Harou isn't for sale either :)

Claire,

Thanks so much for the help. I'm going to make a post on the Luthiers forums and see if I can't find someone to help out.

I really appreciate it.

We just found this video of him playing a couple months before his death. It is with a friends guitar, not the T.HARUO, but still good to see him play. He was just learning.

I bought a T. Haruo model T-80 6 string from a local music store in south Orange county, Ca. back in 1976. I was learning to play the guitar and this was my first. It hurt my fingers, so I bought a Yamaha acoustic with nylon strings so I wouldn't give up. I ended up discontinuing lessons and sold the Yamaha and Fender Strat copy, but couldn't bring myself to sell the T. Haruo. I always loved it's sound. Fast forward to 2007. I gave it to my son, who likes music and wanted to learn to play. He has sung in a band and most his friends play guitar, so I thought they could use it. It now has a split in it's top, I guess from moving to the desert and it dried out. My son took it to a local guitar dealer in Las Vegas, Ed Roman, to inquire about getting it repaired. They had it for a while and it didn't seem to be getting any attention, so my son called them to get some progress. The luthier there asked him to stop by after work and talk about it. My son said when he dropped it of, the luthier said, "oh, it's a Japanese Martin copy....ok", and seemed a little disdainful about it. When my son stopped back in after work the luthier retreived the guitar, got it reverently out of the case, and told him he didn't recommend repairing the top until it was really necessary. He said it could change it's beautiful sound, and that it sounded better than any other guitar in their store. It now gets lots of play time between all the musicians that stop in and visit or want to jam together. It has had a few songs written on it and is enjoyed every day. It is making up for all that lost time that it quitely sat in the dark. Hope you liked the little story. I just wanted to add to the list of T. Haruo information. dc.

Will sumit pics later.   Paid $500.00 out the door (pawnshop).

Just thought I'd add to the post...

I too know nothing about my Haruo.

All it says on the label inside is Handcrafted 1976. With Haruo's signature and Model #50, no serial number or anything.

I've seen pictures of other people's guitars and their labels but never a Model# 50.

I bought this guitar back in 99 I think...from Cartwright's music shop in Stayton Oregon. Just a small local store in a small town. He had it originally listed for approximately $650. He was closing down shop so a lot of stuff was on sale and I got my Haruo for $300 or so with a hard case. I played it and fell in love with it. This shopowner sold mostly high end instruments and said it was one of the best sounding guitars he had there, comparable to Martin.

I love it, it gets played almost daily. Whenever my guitarist friends come over and play on it, it gets complimented on every time. I'll never part with the thing.

If you wanna hear the Haruo in action go to

www.myspace.com/nonstophealing

The first song that comes up is with the Haruo. Don't worry about the lyrics and singing...my buddies just decided to do some freestyle singing late at night after some drinks, haha. Wasn't recorded the best but you can hear the guitar well.

Recently, I've inherited a Haruo T-20 6 string from my father.

At this moment, I'm debating if I am going to sell it or keep it for it's sentimental value. If I sell it, I'm planning to buy an electric instead.

So, what I want to know is, what would be a good asking price for it?

I don't really know what to ask for it, it's in perfect condition, it only needs some new strings, which im going to buy later this week.

Thanks!

Not too many people know about Haruos so its tough to ask a big price from regular people if they don't know much about them. You might have some luck on this posting board though...ya never know. I paid about 350 for mine. Some people have paid more for theirs, some would be willing to pay a lot more for theirs. Just depends on the person at the right time.

Where are you located?

My friend is always complimenting me on mine and how much he likes it and I know he's in the market for a new guitar anyway.

I bought my first T. Haruo in 1979 in Singapore for around $150-180US. I was 15, and an exchange student in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The guitar traveled and lived with me until 1993, when I was "carjacked" at 2am after a gig in Chicago. They went straight for the backseat: in retrospect, the thieves probably followed me from the gig. I pulled the keys from the ignition and started to run after them- my passenger yelled sense into me and I stopped- but the Haruo was gone.

Nothing else sounded like that guitar.

I believe it was actually a Model 10 six string- though in the web info I have found, people have only talked about Model 10 twelve string guitars.

Then in 2007, on a whim, I checked Ebay and bought a Model 50- it was my first Ebay purchase, and I won. In 2008, I found a Model 60 (with the 3 piece D35 back). I play them both, all the time. New friends are consistently stunned by the Haruo's sound and feel.

So I always wonder if a Model 10 six string will turn up someplace...

Thank you all for keeping the Haruo info flowing. Peace.

In the late 70's T. Haruo had left Yamaha, where he was a master luthier, and attempted to put his own signature line into the American market. Some pieces had been sold via wholesalers in earlier 70's, but Haruo himself travelled in USA late 70's. His desire to build the best acoustic guitar possible differed from Yamaha's desire to build affordable guitars for the masses - hence they eventually parted. One of the final stops Haruo made was to St. Louis Music Supply, who owned distribution and brand rights to Alvarez Guitars, Crate Amps, etc. They passed on getting involved with the Haruo line - maybe it was the conflict with their own Alvarez line - I don't know. Before leaving Haruo left a Model 150 with one of the sales managers. I bought it from him in 1983. Today, 26 years later, people still freak out over the warmth and sound of my Model 150. It is still breathtaking. When the strings are replaced and fresh - it almost makes you want to cry. I have played Martins, Taylors, Rainsongs, Gibsons, Larivees, etc and on and on. I have yet to meet a guitar on this planet which sounds better than my Haruo, which I paid $200 for. A contributing factor to this sound is certainly the Jacaranda - the back and sides are made from a glorious cut of Jacaranda with gold streaks, brown waves, dark almost black ripples, and rich chocolate swirls - wood that is no longer available to luthiers or anyone for that matter. I honestly believe that it is not a case where Haruo has improved on CF Martins design and brilliance - he simply stumbled upon a tonewood that we may or may not ever see or hear again.

T.Haruo has been located!! With Dee Tatum leading the hunt, Haruo Terada .. aka .. T. Haruo has been located living quietly in a small town in Kanie, Japan. HARUO TERADA is the man who is responsible for the Haruo brand of guitars. Yoshi Iida, Iida Corp., located the Haruo luthier this week end. Haruo, 83, is presently sick and hospitalized. Dee is trying to set an online interview with Mr Terada as soon as he is able. With that, we are taking questions that you'd like to ask Mr Haruo himself. Pose the questions thru this webpage:

http://www.kritmon.com/T_Haruo_guitars3.html

This may be the last chance to find out ...

Thanks to all Haruo owners!

That is such marvellous news although it is sad that he is not well. I don't think I have any specific questions as such. I would just love to hear more about his life and any technical information he can remember. Most of all I want to be able to thank him from the bottom of my heart for the years of sheer pleasure playing one of his beautiful instruments has given me. Well done finding him. I was feeling quite down because I have flu and my daughter is in hospital but you've just made my day. I'm so happy.

I have a T. Harou six string model T.10 that I bought from a lady in the early 90's. I have always wondered about it because you don't have to be an expert to know that there is something special about the way this thing feels, plays and sounds. I have always loved it and I'm with those who won't part with theirs. I don't have any idea what its worth but to me its worth a great deal more than the one hundred dollars I paid for it. Thank you for starting this thread. I will be watching to see if if you hear anything from the man himself. At the very least I hope someone will tell him that there are people out there who recognize and appreciate his work before he passes on.

Just thought I'd drop in and post some new info. Thru my site, we have a chance to have a limited edition, run of the t.o.l. T.Haruo 6-string guitar, made at the same factory, overseen by the mans son, Shogo Terada. This will be called the Celebration model, to honor Mr Haruo Terada and his guitars. Come visit my site @ www.kritmon.com and follow the links. The details on inlays, wood types etc, etc will be decided as interest grows.

This will be a one time run and only available thru my site. Those seriously interested email @ t.haruo@kritmon.com. This is for real.

Thanks and best,
REA

Hello there! the T. Haruo site is excellent!
I have a T Haruo 12 string T-80-12 vine of life that I'm sadly thinking of selling on EBAY.
Is now a good time to sell with the new Celebration ones coming out?
Mine is in excellent condition, no fret wear and I can't find a mark or scratch on it and it also has a hardshell case.
What do you think is a good asking price?
Thank You

I have a T. Haruo 12-string guitar that I bought at a Sam Ash in 1980.
I don't play much anymore and I'm looking to sell it, and quite honestly I was shocked to see so much info in the internet. If anyone is interested, let me know and I will answer any questions you have.
I suppose it would be best to try it before you buy it - I am in the NY/NJ area.

I think I was one of the first to get my t-20 at sam ash in Hempstead. I have had mine for 34 years . I took it out today after playing my Martin HD28. It was still in perfect tune., umlike my martin which had to be tuned slightly. I look at both and se very little difference. inside the braces are almost identical. sound wise I think maybe a little less bright, but that could be the strings, a little less chunk, probably the slightest difference in wood and looks wise I actually think all the abalone inserts are nicer on the Haruo. I own both and would say for $2500 less the Haruo was a bargain.

Trust me, ollaimh, once you play a Haruo you will never look at the Yamaha again.
