If you check out this thread you will find a link to a MIDI file. With the right software you can print out the sheet music from that.

Check out "A Time for Farewell" in the DT database. Actually there are two sets of lyrics for Ungar's tune, and both are included under this title. Apparently the vocal arrangement has a different title from the instrumental, which Ungar called "Ashokan Farewell."

Couple Sing Outs back, they interviewed Jay Unger and he tells quite a bit about the song. How he composed it for the end of the Ashoken Dance Camp he runs. Think the song was printed there, too. Said he'd only approved two sets of lyrics tho people send him ones all the time, didn't think he'd OK more. I have sheet music for it (and Grian McGregor's words) on computer, but don't think it will survive internet transmission. Barbara

Barbara, that was the Fall 1997 (Vol. 42, No. 2)issue of Sing Out! that has the article about Jay Ungar & Molly Mason. It didn't have "Ashokan Farewell," but it did have another beautiful Ungar/Mason song, "The Lovers' Waltz." Sing Out! now posts MIDIs of their songs on their Web site, and you can access that particular MIDI by clicking here.

If you download "Noteworthy Composer" from the ZDnet shareware library you can convert MIDI files to sheet music. This will give you the potential to learn literally thousands of tunes that can be found on the web.

Dani: I just did a search for "Ashokan" and found both titles right away. You can also search for "Time for farewell" in the searchbox at the upper right of this page, but you must go through many entries before you get to it. Let me know if you continue to have trouble, and we'll work something out.

Why would bagpipe sheet music be any different from regular sheet music??? I know that Highland pipes can't play G# but Ashokan doesn't have a G#. Just C# and one Cnat....so what gives here?

PS...what kind of pipes?

Staff notation for highland pipes is written differently (I forget exactly how) but any competent musician can transpose.

Really recommend the Waltz Books........Ashokan is in book One. If you like Jay Ungars stuff, you'll love these books........he and other talented writers. All well worth the ducats.

Its range is completely impossible for the Highland pipes. For which pipers can only be thankful.

the highland pipes have a range of nine notes.

I play Ashokan Farewell on the piano in the key of D. It goes from the A below middle C to the second G above - a range of 14 notes.

I don't think you can make it work.

Correction; there's a low G in the 22nd measure. That makes it two octaves.

Also, being in D it uses C#, except that there's an C in it about 2/3 of the way through. Can bagpipes do that?

Northumbrian pipes can - well, some of them anyway. It depends on the number of keys you have on your chanter.

You can sometimes get a C natural out of a Highland or Border pipe (it needs either a conical bore or keywork).

I dislike that tune so much that if someone starts it in a session I'm in I will either go for a pee immediately or else sit silently except for blasting out that C natural as loudly as possible when it comes round.

I don't have the same loathing for "Highland Cathedral" - it seems like a more honest fake somehow. Works very well played by a brass band or similarly large and loud group.

My dislike is because it's become overdone, Jack. There are many more deserving tunes in the collections - The Lantern of the North should be applied to it.
