Subject: 'The dime is for the beer'
From: GUEST,Susan Turner

My mother passed away 2 and 1/2 years ago. She had Alzheimers but she remembered all the song lyrics she heard as a young woman. Here are some slightly baudy lyrics (at least I think they are lyrics) - "Get off the table Mable the dime is for the beer" Does anyone recognize this?? Am I right, is there a song out there with this line? Thanks

There's a Limerick that I know of with that punch line, but I haven't heard a full-fledged song using it.

Peter.

Apparently Bull Moose Jackson recorded a song by that name. The "dime" varies from a dime to three dollars. Didn't find any lyrics. Sorry.

GET OFF THE TABLE, MABEL (THE TWO DOLLARS IS FOR THE BEER)

In the diner on the edge of town, I know a gal named Mabel,
She'll bring you up when you're feeling down
Always ready willing and able,
She's the best gal around and she's got the biggest table.

Get off the table Mabel, the 2 dollars is for the beer,
Get off the table Mabel, the 2 dollars is for the beer,
The service is good; I would if I could,
But you can't do that in here.
Chorus
We were down town one night, me and my buddy, Chuck,
We were hungry for a bite, but really down on our luck,
So we went to eat at Mabel's, only cost us 20 bucks
I always try to sit, at booth number three,
I glide in the door, and Mabel waits on me,
And if I'm really good, she lets me eat for free,
Chorus

Hello Guest Susan ... It's amazing what I find on MUDCAT. No, I wasn't aware that this was (is) a song, I just know it as a drunken carpenters shout ... "Get off the table, Mable, the two bits is for the beer!" That shout was usually followed with this one: "She cried as she lifted her wooden leg ... lumbers goin' up!" Oh well ... such stuff! CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson

My dad used to sing this diddy when he was alone working in the garage. I overheard him and brought the tune to the dinner table, much to the dismay of my mother. Dad had been a young Marine in WWII and there ya go...

I heard a salty old Chief bos'n from Louisiana sing this on the
first ship I was on in the US Navy in 1965
He used 'off the table Mable the quarter's for beer'
and continued with the dirtiest lyrics I'd ever heard in a song
(which wasn't hard considering I'd come from Utah).
Wish I could remember the lyrics - and he had many many
lyrics 'from back in the War years' he said.

I know it’s been made into songs but the meaning is Mabel was trying to dance for that quarter ???? my old school grandpa told me that

Damn. Back in 1970, a "shorty" of Hamm's beer was 15 cents.

I must be really old....
