My friend and Friend Eugene Herrington died today, a few hours ago, on Memorial Day. He faced death with the same gentle courage he faced conscientious objection during the Second World War. He acted as a medic, posted to the Pacific, during the last years of the war. He was born and grew up in the Easton New York meeting, the meeting associated with the story of the "Peace Feather" -- that meeting which met a Mohawk war party with the courage of love. When a war party came to kill everyone in Easton, they were at meeting and silently invited the Mohawks to join them in silent worship. (There is a post about one of my songs describing the event during the American War of Independence) I found Eugene to epitomize that brave spirit of love and I will miss him greatly. He is survived by a sister, May. Please hold May in the light during this difficult time. Yours in the light Larry Otway

They always say celebrate the life rather than mourn the death, and they are right. But it's hard to lose a friend, and a brother. Sorry for your trouble Larry.

Hi Larry, I live in downtown Saratoga and I know where Easton is, and some of the folks who go to the meeting out there. It is quite a wonderful legacy your friend has left behind, inspiring the rest of us who believe in those principles, but wonder if we would act on them in the face of opposition, as Eugene did. Thanks for sharing a little of his life with us, and my condolences to you and May. And what a great story Peace Feather is! TeriLu

Larry, I am indeed quite sorry and I feel he too was lucky to have F(f)riends like you. I will certainly focus my best on May and on you too dear friend. Karen and I send you our condolences.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend Larry. That song is probably my favourite on the album. I know that at the end of "Sergeant Musgrave's Dance", the playwright John Arden comments that true pacifism is a very hard road to go down. I do not think I could do it myself, but I have nothing but respect for those who can.

I am sorry for the loss of such a good person, too, Larry. Thanks, very much, for sharing some with us. I will keep you and May in my thoughts and give thanks for his having been among us.

Don't know that story of the peace feather, Larry - where can I find it?

All the best - Ian B

Thanks for the story. It's well worth hearing Larry's very moving song on the Sorcha Dorcha album Ian. There's not a duff track on it, but that is one of the highlights. I am sure Eugene Herrington would have been proud of his friend who wrote it.

I have to say, Eugene liked the song, but he also gave me a site, I have to find the link for you all, which tells the story from the Mohawk point of view... their belief that the smiles of the Quakers were proof that they were among Loyalists! But, either way, it shows peace is contagious. Cheers and thanks Larry

Oh, that IS good, isn't it. Thank you friends and Friends, so to speak.

I quite agree about Larry's album, Alan. The only problem is that I don't get to hear it much, because people keep borrowing it!
