Subject: RE: 'Leadbelly's Last Sessions' From: GUEST,Rachaela Date: 30 Nov 04 - 05:05 PM I just found, in my vast record collection, a boxed pressing of Leadbelly's Last Sessions (Volume 2 FP243). 2 record set Folkways, c. 1953. I played it last night and was astounded at the clarity of the sound. Does anybody have any interest in this pressing? |
Subject: RE: 'Leadbelly's Last Sessions' From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 30 Nov 04 - 06:22 PM I have very fond memories of these recordings. My favourite moment is when your man interviewing Leadbelly(Alan Lomax?? it's a long time since I heard this) says "Now, why do you call the sun Old Hannah?". And Leadbelly says "Well, that's its name". Priceless. The music's good, too. |
Subject: RE: 'Leadbelly's Last Sessions' From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 01 Dec 04 - 10:56 AM Fred Ramsey recorded these. It's my favorite look into Leadbelly's music and life of all the things he ever put on record. MUCH better sound than on the Library Of Congress recorded material. There were 2 volumes on Folkways --- 4 long play records total--2 LPs to each volume. The sound was immediate, clear and right there. Some of my favorite things here were recorded when Huddie had left his famous 12-string guitar at home; the unaccompanied results were field hollers--prison work songs and blues done the way Leadbelly had learned them on the work gang in prison. No instrument. That said, the Capitol Records recordings with ZITHER backup are also among my favorites of Leadbelly's work. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: 'Leadbelly's Last Sessions' From: Don Firth Date: 01 Dec 04 - 12:28 PM A friend of mine bought this record set (Folkways) back in the Fifties and a bunch of us sat around listening to the whole thing one evening. Fascinating stuff! I didn't get it because I couldn't afford it at the time (starving student mode). Huge collection of songs, but what really makes it are the stories he tells. One cut that blew me off my chair was his singing of Springtime in the Rockies, and doing a pretty fair imitation of Gene Autry! Don Firth |
Subject: RE: 'Leadbelly's Last Sessions' From: GUEST,Rachael Date: 01 Dec 04 - 01:46 PM I'm almost in awe of owning this recording I don't have enough knowledge of the subject or the genre or the artist. I have the "Cliff Notes" from a life of loving music. Even I can recognize that it is unique in all respects. When I heard Leon Redbone in the 70's I was as drawn to his style and presentation. I see the influence. I am unworthy. Rachael |
Subject: RE: 'Leadbelly's Last Sessions' From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 01 Dec 04 - 10:50 PM Rachel, It sure sounds like you have wonderful instincts. You are headed in a good direction. This is seminal roots music---the past is full of wonderful insights. And what's more, it's good listening. You are definitely worthy. I envy you; you are at the beginning of the adventure. I wish I could do it all again. Art Thieme |
