Subject: World Cup 2002 From: GUEST,Den Date: 31 May 02 - 03:15 PM I hope nobody minds but I started this new thread in an attempt to deflect the recent bad press around Ireland and Roy Keane. Quite frankly I'm sick and tired of it. So feel free to post your World Cup comments here and like John said Go Senegal. |

Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: GUEST,Len Date: 01 Jun 02 - 12:40 AM well I think you'll find Den that this year it's a silver one |

Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: paddymac Date: 04 Jun 02 - 12:07 AM I read that Ireland tied thier opening round match. I don't know enough about the convoluted way in which "points" are tabulated to grasp what the tie really means in terms of advancement |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: Hrothgar Date: 04 Jun 02 - 03:07 AM Of course, if they had tired their match, they might look a bit drawn. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: alison Date: 04 Jun 02 - 03:17 AM OK.... here's a question (OK .. I lied... a few questions)........ is the Northern Ireland team in it this year? (is there even a Northern Ireland team anymore?).... I have fond memories of being in Spain watching Pat Jennings and the boys.... that shows how long ago it was since I have paid much attention to the world cup....*grin* and do they still do those stupid pop songs for "Top of the pops"..... like "we're on the march wi' Allie's army" (and yes I know that was Scotland).......... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: fat B****rd Date: 04 Jun 02 - 03:52 AM Oh yeah, Bill and Ben. Heh heh. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: Wolfgang Date: 04 Jun 02 - 04:10 AM Northern Ireland always tries to qualify for the final round. This time, in their qualification group they took fifth place out of six, behind Iceland but at least beating Malta. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: alison Date: 04 Jun 02 - 04:12 AM awwwwwwwwww shame............... thanks Wolfgang...... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: Mark Cohen Date: 04 Jun 02 - 04:22 AM Well here in Hawaii I can watch at least some of the matches at a "normal" time...and I've enjoyed them. Except for the sluggish China-Costa Rica match that's just ending. But what do I know, I'm just an ignorant American! Aloha, Mark P.S., I think Turkey were robbed--that should never have been a penalty kick. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: GUEST Date: 04 Jun 02 - 04:32 AM Fair point Mark re the penalty, but the disallowed Brazil goal wasn't offside so I think justice was done |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 04 Jun 02 - 04:58 AM Apparently the authorities are considering giving Rivaldo a retroactive red card for his appalling cheating when he pretended that he'd been hit in the face by the ball when the entire world could see that it hit his leg. He and Brazil are too good for that kind of crap. BJ |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: ard mhacha Date: 04 Jun 02 - 05:52 AM Mark Cohen quite right, poor oul Turkey they were strung up like their namesakes at Christmas. Ard Mhacha. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: Big Tim Date: 04 Jun 02 - 04:09 PM Paddy: Ireland are evenly poised at present. In their Group, "E", Germany are favourites to go through having beaten Saudia Arabia 8-0 ("goal difference" counts in the event of total points equality, after each country has played each other once.) SA are therefore favourites to finish last, no points and beaten 8-0. Ireland and Cameroon, who drew 1-1, are evenly balanced. It's 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw (tie), none for a defeat. Quite simple! Don't yet write of SA though, all they need is a little more violence, sorry, aggression! |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: GUEST,Mick McCarthy Date: 04 Jun 02 - 04:18 PM Ireland will beat Germany, I know Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: Mark Cohen Date: 04 Jun 02 - 05:35 PM GUEST, you're absolutely right, that was not an offside play. As a referee for the youth league here (AYSO), I can appreciate the game much better...and see all the mistakes the referees and the A.R.'s make! It's an impossible job, after all, and I have great respect for the ones who do it well. As one of my instructors said, "As the referee, you have to see everything that is happening on the field, at all times." Yeah, right. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: michaelr Date: 04 Jun 02 - 08:22 PM "They'll beat the Germans without fuss, they'll lay their bones out in the dust..." Not having seen the German team play yet, I don't know, but Ireland may have a tough time of it! Turkey was robbed! That should never have been a penalty kick. And from where I was sitting (in front of TV, with several slo-mo replays) it sure looked like the off-sides call on Brazil was a good one. Never mind the bad officiating, that was the best game of the tournament yet - great show on both sides. Turkey? Who knew? Michael |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: Chris Amos Date: 05 Jun 02 - 01:45 AM I know we are not encouraged to copy songs from the DT but i think it's about time this thread had at least some musical content so here's a good song about football. THE FOOTBALL MATCH It's of a football match, most delightful to be seen, Of twenty-two young rippling lads who played on Salisbury plain. Oh, the ribbons and the favors they was fluttering o'er the plain; Here's a health unto those rippling lads, and so the game went on. CHO: You rippling lads, hooray! You're sure to win the day, And the prize, you will carry it All away, all away. The ball it has been thrown up and the game it did begin; My God, how they did kick it, more like devils than like men. They're having such a motion in rushing it all along, Here's a health unto those rippling lads, and so the game went on. CHO: You rippling lads, hooray! You're sure to win the day, And the prize, you will carry it All away, all away. The ball it being booted up, the goal it did draw nigh, Young Williams stuck a penknife into young Jackson's thigh. He lashed out at the lively ball, to score was his intent, Young Williams missed his aim and through the goal he went. CHO: You rippling lads, hooray! You now have won the day, And the prize, you may carry it All away, all away. Lloyd believes this song is likely describing one of the very rough games traditionally played on Shrove Tuesday between lads in rival English villages. He says "It is no ordinary game when players are lightheart- edly stabbed with penknives." AJS |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: GUEST Date: 05 Jun 02 - 01:52 AM See, those english football hooligans were at it back then as well. The best thing about the World Cup is that one day it will all be over. |

Subject: RE: BS: World Cup 2002 From: Wolfgang Date: 14 Jun 02 - 09:26 AM At the end of the preliminary round, a bit of (quite subjective) analysis: In all world cups after the war, the semi-finals have been played without exception only by teams from Europe and South-America (mostly: three European teams, one South-American team). The number of teams from "rest of the world" qualifying for the world cup has increased since then (more starting places allotted by FIFA), but not yet with success for the later rounds. This time, too, the 'failure rate' has been unequal: 9 out of the 15 European teams came through, 2 of the 5 South-American teams, 5 of the 12 "other world" teams. A repeating feature I see is that the teams with the big stars (Batistuta, Figo, Zidane) have been eliminated a bit surprisingly and several teams without stars (e.g., Danmark, Sweden, Ireland) have been successful. Football is a team sport and, much more than in a 4x100m relay, the addition of the best individual players can do worse than a team with a fighting spirit and a good cooperation (The Swedish team is a prime example how good a team can play without individual excellence). In case you want to know how good my expertise is on this field, may I give you an example? I just have refound my quarter-final pairings predictions from before it all started:
Germany-Italy Even now it is clear that not a single of these predictions can come true. So I better won't tell you my present predictions for the semi-finals and the final. Wolfgang |
