I wouldn't trust that. I imagine you are posting it here because you don't either.

I'm still trying to research McGrath. I posted here first as I have yet to find an answer and certainly do not trust it. Perhaps I'm scaremongoring here in which case I apologies. The most likely bit I have found is that it maybe Klez2.

Bottom line as awlays is don't open attachments you don't understand... Jon

Hi, Jon

Best advice is don't open any of the attachments. Instead, run each of them through your virus checker and I'd be willing to be you come up with alarms blazing on one or all of them.

MS doesn't send out unsolicited e-mails and the clunky grammar is another clue that it's probably virus-laden junk.

As a matter of course, anytime I receive an email attachment promising "something you'll enjoy" from someone I don't know, I run it over once or twice with the ol' cyber-steamroller and send it sailing over the backyard fence.

i agree...run....fast...

there is a bug going around that poses as all sorts of fairly innocent things...including email bounce back notices....

Thanks, Nathan, for the "email bounce back" warning. While I routinely trash everything except personal email from folks I know, I do usually check the bouncebacks.

B*****r, I've just opened a "bounceback" alledging that The McGrath is unobtainable.

Virus checker to run - fast.

"anytime I receive an email attachment promising "something you'll enjoy" from someone I don't know.."

That's ok, but add this: "OR EVEN FROM MY MOTHER".

There are lots of viruses and worms and spies circulating around, which are sent by infected PCs without consent from the sender. A good trick to avoid becoming an unintentional distributor: enter !!!000 as an address in your list. If an undetected worm in your PC tries to send itself to your list, it will be stopped by Outlook Express rendering an error of "invalid e-mail address" and you will notice it. If you want to send a massive distribution to your list (hardly necessary), delete that address first.

Thanks for the tip on bounced mail: surely it is yet another trick to call your attention to the message.

Un abrazo - Andrés

In the "Technical Worm Alert" thread, GUEST Pavane writes: "... note that there does appear to be a fake virus warning email circulating which purports to come from MICROSOFT. The supposed patch itself contains a virus so DO NOT INSTALL IT. MICROSOFT does not issue patches by unsolicited email."

I'd dump it and head for the hills -

I have recieved some e-mails fron "Microsoft" but my Norton anit-virus ALWAYS gives warning of "virus like activity". Better to delete any "ify" e-mails than have a quick peek. cheers

Not only does Mirosoft not send unsolicited emails, but you have to sign up for and give express consent to get emails from Microsoft. I would be extreemly warry of this. if you do not have a virus scan there is a free one on line by grissoft that is very good. Download it and use it please. I see the effets of not using a virus scan everyday please do not fall vitim. andi

Thanks for the info, I had no intention of opening it but I was curious to know about it.

In any case, the only email program I'm using is kmail, a text only program on a linux box and I'd have to think hard before going to the trouble of opening any legitamate attachments that require Windows, be bothered with emails that contain HTML, etc.

As for viruses and worms, I suspect I've been sent another one this morning. It arrived with the subject heading "hello jonbanjo, some questions" from someone in a newsgroup I've recently had some email correspondence with. Again it contained strange attachments. I've just sent him an email informing him.

Yeah, I was going to check about that, Gareth - I was deleting all the things that looked like spam, using Mailwasher, which is handy and free), and I think I deleted and bounced something from you accidentally. (Send it again and I'll be more careful.)

Seems to me that everybody who uses the Internet should be using virus checkers, and they should be updated twice a month, at least. I've been receiving the klez worm in Spam messages a lot lately, maybe once or twice a day. I'm sure glad Norton intercepts them.
Even then, it's good to be very careful about opening attachments.

Oh well, I've finally got round to scanning the attachments in Windows (something which on reflection, I should have done before). Even though the emails have different subjects, bodies and the attachments have different names, PC-Cillin detects them both as worm.klez.G
