A friend gave me a tape from a band I think called Great Big Sea or maybe UP or that's the title of the album; sea shanty folky stuff. Anyway, I think there from Newfoundland. Any info would be great, like if they have anymore recordings and how to get a hold of one. Thanx, K-zoo

They are indeed from Newfoundland and have released a number of recordings in their native Canada. I believe their latest is their first US release and should be available in most good US record stores. Check out their website @ www.greatbigsea.com . I lived in NEwfoundland for two years while in Grad School and their are tons of great musicians and especially singers from there (Figgy Duff, Jim PAyne,Rawlins Cross, Anita Best, mInnie WHite, Jim Fidler, THe Punters etc. etc.) You can order all of GBS recordings on-line from Fred's Records in St. John's, NF which can be found 0n-line @ http://www.nfld.com/~rbuck/gbs.htm The two main folk recording companies in St. John's are SingSong and Pigeon Inlet http://www.pigeoninlet.nfnet.com/ which both have some great recordings also.

Their homepage (http://www.greatbigsea.com) seems proud of the fact that all? their recordings are going to be released in the US on June 2, 1998. Too bad you guys have been missing out so long. I think they're great. "Up" is currently one of my twenty or thirty favorite albums, though I didn't like "Play" quite as much. I was surprised a while ago to hear a local rock reviewer enthusiatically reporting that she thought Great Big Sea's "unplugged" concert in Toronto was, if I remember, the best "unplugged" concert she'd ever seen.
