Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: My Gigi fromthe Figi Isles popular From: GUEST,Liland Date: 01 Jun 02 - 07:22 PM I was married to a gal from Fiji for four years, but her name was Shakuntala, which doesn't fit the metre (nor the rhyme scheme). But I just thought I'd point out that "Figi" is not a common spelling. The standard is "Fiji", and "Feegee" and "Feejee" are both more common than "Figi" (which makes me think of Christmas puddings). And of course in Fijian (Bauan) it's Viti... Liland |

Subject: Lyr Add: ...MY GEE GEE FROM THE FIJI ISLE From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Nov 11 - 08:31 PM The sheet music can be seen at the University of Mississippi: Click for a PDF. OH GEE! SAY GEE! YOU OUGHT TO SEE MY GEE GEE FROM THE FIJI ISLE Words by Lew Brown, music by Albert Von Tilzer New York: Broadway Music Corporation, ©1920. 1. Hiram Perkin got tired of workin' on the farm each day, So he wandered down to see the circus in the town, Saw the animals and the cannibals when they came on view, Then he flirted with a wild, wild woman and they got real friendly too. When Hiram got back home, the folks all gathered by his side. They said, "Where were you? What did you see?" and Hiram replied: CHORUS: Oh, gee! Say, gee! You ought to see my Gee Gee From the Fiji Isle! Gosh! Gee! Say, gee! you ought to be with Gee Gee. She can make you smile. Rings inside her nose, Bells upon her toes, And I'm here to tell you that she's some high kicker. Her kick is like the kick in homemade liquor. She's got a lingo as funny as By Jingo*— You know what I mean— And she does a twister much better than her sister, Silly Chili Bean**. Over here, over there, she's a little bit bare, So she wears a lot of leaves to protect her from the air. Oh, gee! Say, gee! You ought to see my Gee Gee From the Fiji Isle! 2. Hiram giggled each time she wiggled; he was gone for fair, Followed her around until the circus left the town, Told the friends he knew he was going to sell his farm next day. They thought he was going crazy so they called the doctor right away. The doctor felt his head and said, "There's something wrong inside. I can't diagnose it. What can it be?" and Hiram replied: CHORUS * See OH BY JINGO! OH BY GEE! (YOU'RE THE ONLY GIRL FOR ME) by Brown & Von Tilzer. ** See CHILI BEAN. EENIE-MEENIE-MINIE-MO by Brown & Von Tilzer. How many songs are in this series, anyway? |
Subject: Lyr Add: MY GEE GEE FROM THE FIJI ISLE From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Nov 11 - 05:35 PM You can hear a 1921 recording of MY GEE GEE FROM THE FIJI ISLE, sung by Emerson Westervelt, at The Internet Archive. His second chorus is different from the first: CHORUS: Oh, gee! Say, gee! You ought to see my Gee Gee From the Fiji Isle! Oh, gee! Gosh, gee! You ought to be with Gee Gee For a little while. She has so much charm, I think I'll sell my farm. I'm just a deuce(?) while I am here on my land. I'll be the king while on the Fiji Island. She's got a father; I love her dear old father. He's a nice old guy, 'Cause when he meets you, he greets you, and then he tries to eat you Like a piece of pie. Ev'ry night he'll invite some good friends to have a bite, But I'll never be ... till he's lost his appetite. Oh, gee! Say, gee! You ought to see my Gee Gee From the Fiji Isle! |
