Subject: Visit to Scotland/UK: music?

Hi all; I am travelling in the UK from June 13th to June 27th. I'll be in London off and on, as well as Glastonbury (June 15-17), Banbury (June 24-26) and Edinburgh/Aberdeen (June 19-23). If anyone has any thoughts on musical diversions for these towns I'd appreciate it!

This trip is briefer than I was originally planning (had to shave off a week at the end); next time I want to take several days to hike the Ridgeway trail between Marlborough and Avebury. I think it will take five days or so to do in relatively brisk yet pleasurable fashion (depends on weather, too of course). Also I have a friend who will be in Derry for a few months so I hope to visit Ireland for the first time in the coming year!

happy trails ev

Perfect bad timing to miss the English Country Music Weekend 28 - 30 June at Chagford in Devon.

Peg:

When in London, go to Cecil Sharp House in Camden Town and pick up a copy of their directory of folk music clubs in the UK. It'll tell you where folk clubs are meeting all over England and includes phone numbers so you can check in advance to see if the venue has moved. We had very good luck using it twelve years ago. It's not so good for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland but seemed to be very accurate for England.

You can also access the EFDSS directory online, now, though it's not as well designed as it could be:

Try the BBC website for the Radio Scotland folk program presented by Archie Fisher. A 2 hour programme thurs nights repeated sats with a weekly folk diary that is accessable via the 'net. Also via the BBC website, Radio 2's weekly National (english bias however)folk program on wed nights, presented by Mike Harding. Unlike Radio Scotland there is not a specific diary section in the programme, but I believe that the website does give more diary type info.

Furthermore, many of the BBC local radio stations have folk programmes, info from which should also be accessable via the BBC website

Peg

If you're beside Camden Market it is worth while looking into a pub called "The Stags Head" in Hawley Road off Castlehaven Street just up from Camden Lock.

They usually have good Irish Music sessions on Week-end nights (from 9pm onwards) and Sunday afternoons.

ooh that sounds great! Funnily enough there is a bar called The Stag's Head just up the street from me (but it is a yucky dive with a scary clientele and no Irish music at all).

Dick Greenhaus and I will be in South Scotland/North England/North Wales in August and have some time to visit mudcatters and/or attend folk events the week before Whitby - Aug 12-16. Any suggestions?

Susan, I thought you were spending the week at the folk school near Ayr?

Blackfriars Music Edinburgh is the oracle- website & paper. AND past threads - one was mine.
cresby.com of course for anything in the Mid West.
There is something in Dollgellau on my site (see "other/further") but I can't quite get to the page at the moment so can't rember the precise dates. It is out of my "area".

Since you have a friend coming to Derry, take a look at the session info I posted at < a href=http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=48139&messages=14> another current travel thread
