What is the origin of this song?   did it originate as an African American spiritual or is it from the Celtic background of Southern Appalachia?

Alfred Karnes recorded:

Masato, you are so right. Alfred G Karnes was a terrific singer. I love his version of 'Golden Bells' and everything else he does. My recommendation - if you haven't heard him sing yet, do yourself a favour and do so as soon as possible. You won't regret it. He played something called a Harp-guitar. Anybody know anyhting about Harp Guitars? Burl.

I like Alfred G. Karnes' singing of this song, which is on Kentucky Gospel 1927 - 1928 (DOCD-8013).

Emmylou Harris sings on Angel Band album. This is the Emmylou version.

WHEN THEY RING THOSE GOLDEN BELLS
(Traditional: Arranged by Emory Gordy / Patty Loveless)

There's a land beyond the river
That we call the sweet forever,
And we only reach that shore by faith, you see.
Yes, I want to see my Jesus,
Shake His hand, and have Him greet us,
When they ring those golden bells for you and me.

Don't you hear the bells a-ringin'?
Can't you hear the angels singin'?
It's a glory-hallelujah jubilee
In the far off great forever
Just beyond the shining river
When they ring those golden bells for you and me.

When our days have known their number,
When in death we sweetly slumber,
When the Kingdom mends the spirit to be free,
There'll be no more stormy weather.
We'll live peacefully together
When they ring those golden bells for you and me.

Don't you hear the bells a-ringin'?
Can't you hear the angels singin'?
It's a glory-hallelujah jubilee
In the far-off great forever
Just beyond the shining river
When they ring those golden bells for you and me,
When they ring those golden bells for you and me.

Also performed by The Country Gentlemen, Gospel Song Birds, The Cluster Pluckers, Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet, Alfred G. Karnes, and the list goes on. Title is sometimes "When They Ring the Golden Bells."

It is in the DT. Enter golden bells in Forum search and it will come up, along with some threads which discuss it.

I imagine by the time that I post this, Masato or Dicho will already have posted three different variants. I've never heard Emmy Lou do this song, but it's been recorded by many black gospel quartets. I'll check lyrics to recordings I have, once the Gospel Brothers post their versions. (I think they are a terrific resource, and generous beyond measure...)
