When we finally moved back to my home town, after some time in the Welsh valleys, the sound that told me I was really back was the foghorn going off in the Severn Channel. I do have happy memories of my early years there. When I was five, the family moved to North Yorkshire, and for months I couldn't work out where the mountain that used to be at the bottom of the garden had gone, why the sharp tang of the steelworks (with occasional additions of ketones and aromatic hydrocarbons from the Baglan and Llandarcy refineries) had been replaced with a rather riper, more "organic" smell, and why I could no longer hear all night long the comforting "chug, chug, chug, clang" from the marshalling yards at Margam. Some other places 'Catters may find interesting; anywhere on the Pembrokeshire coast path (with the possible exception of parts of Milford Haven); the mining museum at Ponterwyd (or LLywernog) near Aberystwith; the Vale of Rheidol Railway (runs from Aberystwith to Devil's Bridge during the summer months).

Maybe one day, I'll investigate the South myself... I've never really been there except for a couple of times when I had 2 wheels and went to go on a Sunday trip. I only ever headed for St. Davids - A470, A487 and then a bit. Sian's patch, I think but I used to love the bay on my right going down, the drop down into Fishguard and the little bit of road onto St Davids. All I did when I got there was sit down for 1/2 hr, have a smoke and relax and then go to a cafe in Fishguard before winding my way back... I must have been mad, and I nearly killed myself on the way back when the battery had charging problems and I temporarily lost the headlight when I applied my brakes somewhere near Ffestiniog on the way back (I ended up taking a corner on the wrong side of the road)... Fun days though and I was about 20 at the time (and had a CB200 Benley)... Jon |

Then travel west towards Swansea and out into the Gower peninsula to Rhosilli. You'll pass through some very fine scenery indeed - Port Talbot excepted (though, even then, the steelworks can be a stirring sight as evening falls. Just keep your windows closed and switch the air conditioning to "recirculate"). The Welsh Tourist Board does (or did) a very good guide to castles in Wales and the Marches at a very reasonable price. We toured around and found some lovely sites, for several years, on the strength of it. |

Wales is great. As it happened, we quickly determined that one week was not enough to cover any broad swathes of Wales, (and our rental car was limited to 75 miles per day, which would get us down to Suth Wales but not back to Liverpool under limit) so we stuck to Northern and Midwales, going no further south than Aberdyfi. We did make the Conwy Folk Club at the Malt Loaf on Monday, it was great, thanks Jon and Mr happy. Saw lots of castles, some Roman stuff, prehistoric tombs, burial mounds, etc, wonderful countryside, mountains, lakes, mist, rivers, and buttloads of sheep. I recommend it to anyone, and definitely plan on returning! Love, -J PS. Bron, I should have called you - we stayed in Machynlleth, or rather, Dinas Myrddy (?) with a strange and unfriendly B&B woman - would rather have seen a welcoming face! Next time.

From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 06 Jun 02 - 03:12 AM No one has mentioned the Wye Valley, absolutely gorgeous now, lush green valley with lovely areas to stop along. Buses run the length. You could do, Chepstow (with a big Castle and Normon Church, lovely town lots of pubs and museum), then Tintern, (big Cistercian Abbey and lots of pubs, and walks in that area great views) down to Llandogo for more pubs and nice scenery, then Monmouth - busy market town, lots more pubs (my band play there in a pub once a month). That also has a museum, then there's Hereford - with the big cathedral and the Mappa Mundi in it. Erm, definately a trip to Hay on Wye is worth it, especially if you like books, then on to North Wales from there. There you go... Hope that helps (though Newport Museum is pretty good - it is a bit of a grey old town, although I spent 4 excellent years at art college there, the craic was good, just a bit industrial - just so you know what to expect) Regards Have fun Ella |

Give up this foolish notion of travelling to such wild and exotic far-way foreign parts with those evocative and romantic names while you've still got some money left. If you really must travel, go to Rothesay (it's near enough a different country) or have yourself wrapped in brown paper and mailed to Australia before it's too late!!!!!! We can then arrange to send you back to Wales as an undeliverable package for a small extra fee. |

If you have an open evening, try very hard to attend a choir practice. Wales has been famous for well over 100 years for its male voice choirs. Hearing one is an experience not to be missed. Even a small village will probably have one, and visitors are welcome - even to join the lads afterward at the local for a pint or two. What could be better? Good music, good beer, and good cameraderie - free! (Well, except for the beer) :-) |

I was in North Wales a few years ago, stayed at the Youth Hostel in Bettws y Coed and took day trips to Conwy Castle and through Snowdonia Park. The latter is one of the most breathtaking scenic areas I've ever seen -- and that's having seen most of the sights of North America and a good part of Asia. Wonderful place! If in the north, I'd still say visit Conwy as I think the castle looks magnificent. What to me are the best views of it from a distance can be seen driving down from Bryn Pydew where you can see it accross the water. Funny really, I lived in Pydew for 28 years and never took a photo. The Great Orme is what you make of it. One for me would that I did a couple of times when me brother and family came down is... Make sure you have a few drinks and some food to cook and equipment to light a fire. Follow the road up to the ski slope and where there is a rough track on the left, take it and make your way up towards Elephants Cave. Carry on going past the cave, over the wall and turn right. Gather some wood and get the fire going and while your food is cooking, relax with a can and enjoy the scenery. I'd be very surpised if you see a single tourist while up there. Jon |

Wales coast which is a very touristy area. Whilst the N. Wales coast appeals to many, head away into mid-Wales, west Wales,south Wales, the Welsh Marches etc and you won't be dissapointed. The countryside is magnificent, the whole feel of the place really is something else. The nearly all the other contributions in this thread are far more specific, just go and enjoy it! John |

The best castle (for my money) is Carreg Cenin (between Llandeilo and Ammanford) as it's a castle of a native Welsh lord, and the best of his three in the mid-Tywi valley. It's not far from Llyn y Fan Fach with it's legends of the Lady from the Lake and her family, the Physicians of Myddfai. My other favourite bit is the stretch from St. David's to Cardigan - the cathedral is superb, Fishguard has a folk club, there are celtic crosses/ogam stones in Nanhyfer (Nevern) as well as the standing stones at Pentre Ifan and the recreated Celtic village at Castell Henllys, then the old church at Mwnt where you can also watch for seals and dolphins. I'm sorry I can't offer a place to rest your head in June or July as I've got either a full house or no plumbing! Sian |

This is a singing/dancing/poetry competition/display by the children of the Urdd Gobaith Cymru (Welsh League of Youth). The standards are very high, and the whole site very welcoming. The Maes (event field) is in the grounds behind Cardiff Castle. |

Walked up Snowdon and travelled from there to Porthcawl, took ages. We were lucky with the weather, and Snowdon was truly stunning, the only disappointment was we didn't have time to walk the horseshoe so I could enjoy the vertigo rushes. I can see no reason from your list of interests why you would want to visit Porthcawl, but it's the closest thing to SOdom or Gomorah I've ever encountered. Like a frontier town, though this my have been to do with the rugby. Naturally I've booked up for next time. Z |

From: Gareth Date: 04 Jun 02 - 08:35 AM It depends upon whay your after - History is not confined to North Wales, the Roman remains in Caerleon, and Gelligaer (South) are always worth a visit. Castles, well we loose count, us Welsh were aways a rebellious lot, and these can range from roman encampments and forts, to the Castles of the march, and Garrisons, such as Cardiff, Caerphilly, and Chepstow. Civil war fortifications such as Stowhill, or Malpas Rebuilt follies such Castle Coch (The Red Castle and very similar to Mad Ludwigs castles on the Rhine) to the last Castle of all Cyfarthfa Castle at Merthyr built by The Crawshaws (of "Cosher Bailey" fame) to protect himself from his work force. Arturian ledgends, well there is some link to Caerleon as a possible site for Camelot, Merlins Oak at Camarthen in the West. Industrial History, well the Valleys are full of it, particullaly along the heads of the Valley line where the Coal and Iron Ore, and Limestone seams outcropped together. I suggest if youv'e a day or two to spare try the Taff Trail from Cardiff to Merthyr and beyond, or walk the Brecon Canal from Newport (well Cwmbran) to the Beacons. Museams - try the Welsh Folk Museam at St Fagan's, just outside Cardiff, or the National Museam of Wales at Cardiff. The Newport Museam in John Frost Sq., is worth a visit, as is the Maritime and Industrial Museam at Swansea. Word of warning though, if your walking in the hills the weather etc can turn very nasty very quickley, even in summer. If I can assist please PM me. Gareth |

There is not a lot in the town itself apart form the old castle and walls but maybe if you get there on the right night, you'll find the Monday night folk club in the Malt Loaf or maybe other things going on at other times of the week. If you are there during the day time and the weather is nice, try to have a pint on the quay - it's a spot I used to love. If in that area, I'd also reccomend visiting the great Orme in Llandudno and admiring the views of the bay... Pip, my my mum would have you travelling into Snowdonia and looking at the mountains, etc. Both of us are now the other side of the UK (Norfolk, E cosat of England) so we can offer no help with accomodation. I can only say enjoy Wales and maybe suggest a portion in the North. Suggestions from maybe Bron (mid), Sian (west), Gareth and others (south) hopefullly will give more suggestions. Jon |

I always wanted to see Wales, and haven't managed it in four years here, so now I'm headed that way for a week aand a half or so. Where should I go? What's unmissable? Where to start? Who to see? Can I stay with you? can I bring a friend? I love history, I'm a Mediaeval English students, so ancient legends, Arthurian mythology, historical sites, castles of all types and cool libraries are a plus. So are bookstores.
